The physics of “wind confusion” make sense to me.  In this instance, you’ve got a very tall structure with the overhanging (and sloped) canopy that prevents wind from going straight into the stadium and “encourages” the currents to move up.  Then, if the perforated panels do in fact “break up” the wind you’ve simply got a much less aggressive force attacking the structure.  I’m really curious to see what it feels like inside.  I assume they ran models of a full mock-up through a wind tunnel during the design stage…

I’m guessing they did. My point was that these aren’t some magic panels or new technology…at least now that I’ve seen them being installed, they don’t appear to be. As I often say during construction: “wait until it’s finished as there may be more to it”.

Yeah...I'm also just thinking about the way all of those associated with the project talk about the fan experience.  They are acting as though fans are going to be pretty damned comfortable while "enjoying" the fact that the stadium is open air...

I actually think the wind thing is more about the quality of play than it is about fan comfort. I remember so many games in the current stadium where wind had a significant impact on game strategy and it didn’t always help the Bills. The fact that the new stadium is completely encircled with a consistent height grandstand and cantilevered roof (coupled with a more favorable orientation) should greatly cut down on those type of games. Far more than any metal panels they erect on the exterior.

It would have been nice if the Bills new stadium was like Sofi. Roof over head but open air to enter the stadium. In a perfect world a retractable roof is what Buffalo needs. Sept thru Nov there really isn't to many issues with the weather. Maybe a game here or there when it's raining or windy out so then use the roof. For the most part its only Dec and Jan when they need a roof in Buffalo. But I am sure the new stadium will be nice as its presently being built.

Many of you may have read this a few years ago, but for those that didn’t, here’s a link to an article and the opinion of an engineer who deals with wind dynamics. This is the guy who once explained to me why the winds at the current stadium do what they do. I tried explaining his analysis here at some point, but it was pooh-poohed by the masses. Oh well. Anyway, I thought some may find this interesting:

If it's "more comfortable" for the players, it's more comfortable for the fans too.

Comfortable? The on field challenges with wind at the existing stadium are about game strategy and playability. They’re not about players comfort.

Thought you should know

Did you see anyone climbing out of a porta-potty covered in feces? I hear that guy loves to check out the new stadium.

Does Buffalo have a professional hockey team?

Not since the Beauts went out of existence.

After a lot of logistical coordination I got a personal tour of the new stadium construction site today. A real bucket list item for a long practicing Architect and long time Bills fan. The place is huge and very impressive. Attending games in the new stadium will be nothing like the current experience. Standing at the field level I was struck by how tall and enclosed it feels.

And, I answered a few of my own questions: First, the scaffolded ‘dance floor’ suspended from the roof is just to install conduit from and to the lights and speakers (as others suspected). The underside of the roof is just too high above the upper deck seating bowl to reach with any other lifts or cranes. Second, the wind confusion panels are indeed nothing more than perforated metal architectural panels that open up to the interior concourses in a few spots but I believe they are mostly decorative. It’s really the height and full circle enclosure that’ll be the biggest factor in reducing wind inside the bowl.

If anyone has any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.

Go Bills!

Were you able to tell how much of the seating is covered by the canopy?

It’s exactly as advertised. Both the renderings and photos are deceiving because of the distortion caused by the height and pitch of both the roof and upper deck.

And by the way, the view from up on top of the roof is amazing, even if fans won’t ever go up there. It’s tall!!!

I hear ya, what's interesting is that they said that parking's only going to be minimally impacted this fall.  I'm not sure how that's possible as LOT 4 would seem to be all but entirely unavailable if they're really going to begin the "big digging," as will be some of the RV Lot too.  I mean they've at least gotta fence if all off for safety reasons.

Should be interesting to be sure.  Might be the better season to hit some road games.

That’s good to hear. I was starting to think that they were including suites and club levels as part of the percentage that they said would be covered. From some of the pictures and drone videos it looked like just the upper decks were covered.

Sorry somehow I replied to the wrong thread. I meant to reply to SoCal peek.

How far is the walk from my seat to the bathroom 😀 Ok, not really, but did you get an idea for what the bathroom situation will be?  Will they be mega-sized bathrooms or a ton of smaller ones?

It is primarily the upper deck that’s under the roof, but what’s hard to communicate is that the mid levels are under the cantilever of the levels above them. And…unlike at the current stadium, the upper deck goes all the way around the field, so it’s actually a much larger percentage of the total capacity from the current stadium’s.
