Even the best fans -- us -- can't evaluate college talent accurately at all.

I like to go to the Josh Allen draft thread from time to time.

The very first reaction was "lol". Another: "Rosen was right there".

I wonder how many members just 'folded their tent', and reregistered under a new screen name? 🤔

Scouting doesn't work that way. You don't have an "offensive line scout" and a "running back scout". The scouts specialise by geographical area not by position.

Not saying you are wrong but that seems like an archaic way of scouting that made sense in the 80’s and 90’s.

It is about practicality and cost as much as anything else. America is such a big place and the college football season is so short. If you have 1 "running back" scout and he has to take a view on every draft eligible running back he will run out of time and cost you a lot of money.

The layer of positional expertise is really added by the coaching atafd when they join the party in February, March and April.

Buffalo has 18 personnel in the scouting department besides Beane with 11 scouts. You would think that someone would have a better understanding of the D & O line players, pass rushers and RBs, and WRs.

Beane knows his stuff...with that trade for Stephon Diggs...BOOM a late #1 pick for a superstar WR!  Great trade, great GM that built a perennially mediocre team into a contender! 13-3, oof! Beane hasn't had those early draft picks fall to him by having a bad team. The 80's-90's Bills, and Buffalo had back-to-back 2-14 teams draft, Bruce Smith and Will Wolford.

Who has the Buffalo scouts hit a home run with? QB Josh Allen. (Grand slam) TE Dawson Knox. K Tyler Bass. Tremaine Edmunds. OG Wyatt Teller (who they traded away) Gabe Davis (maybe this season)? Singletary wasn't that bad and would have been better with some better O-line players. 4.6 YPC AVG might have been better had the team actually run more.

Then it might be wise to hire some ex-top positional coaches and ask to gather some expertise from them. Such as ex-Buffalo Bills O line coach Jim McNally...who currently happens to be a consultant for the Cincinnati Bengals 2012-now. (you know, the coach who took an undrafted rookie free agent TE and coached him into an all-pro, pro bowl LT named Jason Peters.)

Or hire whoever is scouting for the Chiefs, or Eagles because those teams know what they are looking at when it comes to RB, and O line. The Eagles and that D line, Haason Reddick, (FA from none other than Carolina). 5 forced fumbles, 16 sacks, and 26 QB hits.

Dick Jauron was somewhat underrated as the Bills head coach from 2006-2009.

Yes, he had his shortcomings and could never get past Brady/BB and the Patriots. But...

1. During his tenure, the Bills roster was woeful in the talent department.

2. Managed to get to 7-9 with JP Losman at QB -- and the Bills were in the playoff hunt until the final week of the season.

3. 2007 team was injury riddled with a then record # of guys on IR. Still went with 7-9 with Losman and Edwards at QB.

4. Got off to a hot 4-0 start before Edwards got his his brain scrambled in Arizona. Edwards (and the team) never psychologically recovered.

Again, not suggesting he was a great coach (still shudder at "It's hard to win in the NFL") -- just that he did a much better job of playing the hand he was dealt than many remember.

I hear what you’re saying.

Fans I thoughts in general were too harsh on him.  People in general judged him more for his personality or lack there of

So I don't know if I would say he was underrated, but with a little more luck in a few very tight games the drought probably starts after 06 or 07. I think he was an average couch and the bounces really went against him as a coach. Jauron to me was a coach who the league started passing by at this point, for the early 2000s and earlier he was fine for how the league played its games. He was about ball control, playing safe, running the ball, and limiting mistakes to give yourself a chance. The problem was by 06-07 the league was morphing into an aerial show that rewarded aggression not conservativeness. Plus throw in the NE factor that you had perhaps the best team in the league yearly to contend with it almost always left you at an 0-2 starting point.

06- AFC Wildcard was taken by the 9-7 Chiefs. The Bills went 7-9 with one score losses to at NE, NYJ, at DET, at IND, SD, and TEN. Week 17 at BAL meant nothing so hard to know what happens if it matters, but literally a bounce or two makes that week different with BUF 8-7 or even 9-6. It isn't a stretch to say they were close and as we saw in 2017 it doesn't take much to alter everything.

07- AFC Wildcard was 10-6 that year by the Titans. The Bills actually were 7-6 with 3 weeks to go and again had four one score losses including the infamous DEN and DAL choke jobs. Same scenario as 06' week 17 was a nothing game at PHI so with a bounce or two again (or DEN and DAL missed FGs) BUF might be playing for something.

08- Same old story better start with crappier finish and again three tight losses to CLE, at NYJ, and SF that alter trajectory of things. I have always though had the Bills beat CLE on the last second FG they would've been alright, instead I think it broke them mentally and pressure wise as they had no wiggle room.

Regardless even if Jauron goes 10-6 in 07' for insistence to make the playoffs they are one and done and we end up in a similar place. The only change might have been Buffalo is picking in the draft top 3 with Luck and RG3 instead of the year prior with Cam.

Yeah that was just it with his teams.  They weren’t terrible but left you with a certain amount of hope only to disappoint

Okay, I'd have to say the most unpopular opinion right now is going after Charger RB Austin Ekeler. I say this because this board went nuts talking about RB Christian McCaffery who signed with the 49ers. Nobody is talking about Ekeler.

I've read that it would take a 3rd round pick and pay the guy almost double what he is currently getting paid. Around 12 mill per.

Considering that CmC is getting 16 mill per and Kamara is getting 15 mill per. This kid has been healthier than CmC along with putting up some Thurman Thomas-type all-purpose numbers for the Chargers. 204 rushes for 915 yards, 13 Tds. Receiving 107 receptions for 722 yards, 5 TDS. That's 1637 all-purpose yards and 18 TDs.  That's with an 84%.3 catch percentage.

Ekeler was an undrafted free agent in 2017. in 2020 he signed a 4 year 24.5 million dollar contract that will allow him to be a free agent next season. He is currently unhappy with his current contact and I don't blame the guy as he is way underpaid considering what other top pass-catching top RBs are making.

For some reason, the Chargers don't want to pay the guy what he is worth as he has outplayed his current contract and he knows it. If he plays out his current contract with the Chargers I kinda doubt he will want to stay with them after this season.

HoF star QB Jim Kelly has stated he thinks that the Bills need to help Josh Allen with a top RB. Ekeler would certainly fit the Bill.

Leslie Frazier will be back for the up coming season, and will continue to not make in game adjustments, and will be “let go” half way through the season, only to get hired by the Dolphins a week later, leading the charge for them to massive disappointment in the post season…, some things never change…

And the Bills will be scheduled to play the Chiefs at Arrowhead during the next 10 seasons.

And someone will patiently explain that it's just an algorithm used by the league and nothing personal. All we have to do is stop winning our division. As soon as we are not good enough to compete for the Super Bowl, we won't have to play them at Arrowhead.

I know it was a roller coaster year but I think part of the burnout 2nd half of the year was them believing their own hype

The Bills in the 1991 Super Bowl were overconfident after rolling the Raiders 51 - 3. There might have been a bit of ego last year early on when we were dominating, but I don't think it perdured throughout the season. By the end, the cumulative toll of unprecedented crises and injury was too much. (Also, more than Frazier, I think some first year issues with Dorsey were a problem that increased tensions over the course of the year.)

Exactly! Remember one video about Miller and Diggs chuckling it up like they already had the SB in the bag.

Need MUCH LESS of this crap:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW9eMVL-uSg
Josh Allen joins Von Miller to speak about Lamar Jackson deserving a max contract, Tua's injury, his hopes for the Bills season and more in the second episode of Bleacher Report's The Voncast.
23:13- Josh Allen throws up before each game
26:46- Aaron Judge hits #62, Josh played baseball
27:12- Von being around a lot of great QBs
27:43- If Von could add a former teammate to the Bills/Odell conversation
28:50: Von discussing Josh’s energy he brings to the team and off the field
30:03- How long Josh has been playing golf
30:35- Von designing his house around his teammates....

Aware it's due to a formula, just not sure the situation will change.

Yes, I was really just adverting to the response that is typically given when folks mention the inequity. While true, it is still annoying. The bitter irony was meant to be in the last part which is that somehow the way the algorithm works, we seem to be penalized for winning the division, with the further bitter thought that if the Chiefs were terrible or we had no chance to plausibly compete for the SB, we then would also not seemingly have to play them every year at Arrowhead. Mechanical, impersonal, yet there is still the sting of cosmic malice . . .
