Would you say books that contain explicit sexual content should be allowed in elementary and middle schools? Would you want your 4th grader coming home from school with one of these books in their backpack?

No one is banning these books, they can still be written, published and distributed, just not available in a school library/ You get that, right?

Many do and are being disingenuous by calling it a "ban" because it plays well politically.

My daughter has a phone but it is only available to use when she is in the main portion of our house, so she knows while we don't generally listen in we could, and whatever she is doing online is tracked. The fact that you guys believe that because some parents suck that all kids should be allowed to access porn without a parents knowledge all for politics proves how disturbed you are

That’s admirable, and I hope it works. I’m just skeptical that we can keep the kids from being exposed to these things. And the books people decry, even if graphic, are far, far less damaging than the images almost all kids are exposed to online whether their parents “allow” it or not.

The fact that some kids are seeing it is something that should be minimized, not promoted. Asking for these books to be removed from a school should not cause political fighting. Maturity questionable material should not be used in schools.

And again: that’s where local parents, librarians, and school boards come into play. Not some pompous politician seeking attention.

That doesn't mean you still don't try to limit it.  Just because kids can access porn on the internet it doesn't mean you, say, allow it to be shown on TV saying "well, they can see it on the internet anyway."

On any issue where there is a true second side I agree on local control but I do not see the "other side' in this case except the political one.

You seem unwilling to agree the materials, materials that have been shut down when read aloud at school board meetings, don’t belong in schools solely so that you can make a political point.

Yep.  Full on assault for the next 3 plus months - and in fact, I’d go right for the jugular 24/7 - repeat daily that he’s a fraud with no record of legislative accomplishment that let the woke left fully take over DC as best represented by Fauci and what’s left of the FBI

Make sure to mention he’s a wasted vote because in 2 years we’re going thru this all again anyway.  He doesn’t have the time or energy or more importantly capability and fortitude to fight what’s destroying this country.

DeSantis has been doing all those thinks in Florida for almost 5 years now.

Blitzie, is that you? I thought you stormed out of the room after the pathetic debate, never to return?

That was so 48 hours ago. Welcome back. I saw the Bill Maher interview. He did well! Coming into the lion's den suits him. Maher is more than a little sympathetic to the anti-woke cause too. I also saw a bit of Newsom with Hannity. Same thing! Relaxed, confident, looked much better than when preaching to his own choir.

Is this a new thing, talking to people who don't necessarily agree with you? What is America coming to?

Ron DeSantis Kills It on Bill Maher, Has the Lib Audience Cheering

Ron DeSantis, who was in California to speak to the state's GOP, appeared with Bill Maher on Friday evening, and it went well.

Pressed on everything from COVID-19 to abortion, the Florida governor had the liberal audience cheering at times as he delivered conservative answers.

It only took a few seconds for DeSantis to get his first round of applause, touting that he made vaccine mandates illegal in Florida. Given Maher's skepticism about left-wing COVID hysteria, that was a smart strategic play to soften the room before getting into the tougher questions.

Maher took a few shots after, which shouldn't anger any Republican because that is the point of his show (everyone should learn to laugh a little more). DeSantis then got serious when pressed on what makes him unique in the field, noting that the nation needs actual accountability for the government's COVID regime, including mandates and lockdowns. The audience ate that up.

Next, Maher brought up the idea that DeSantis campaigned for supposed "election deniers" in 2022, including Kari Lake. He was ready, though, and turned the issue around on Democrats.

And look, I know the response to this by some is going to be "Well, did you know Trump is up eleven-billion points!" Yeah, I get it. Trump is leading four months before the first primary and he's the presumptive nominee. I'm not arguing that. I just don't care in this context. We praise Republicans who do good things on this site regardless of their standing in any primary. DeSantis stepped out of his comfort zone and made the GOP seem more relatable to a hostile audience. That's a good thing.

Sure, but there is significant pressure from outside the community coming from both sides on this. Our POTUS' dept of education is threatening federal funding for not "getting in line"
