He played for UCLA as a freshman, retired from football after suffering a concussion as a sophomore, transferred to Miami and sat out a season, then played 1 year at DE?

So he's played 1 full season, and one season at DE, after playing 4 games as a freshman and 6 games as a sophomore?

Anything is possible but I'd kind of like to see a guy with more playing experience

Yup.  His talent/physicals say top 15 imo.  I doubt he makes it to 30, but if he does, he fits the bill imo.  He’s a roll of the dice....but who isn’t at 30?

I see why you wouldn’t want him, but I also see why everyone would want him.  Especially at 30.

This kid has only played 20 games since high school (which was 5 years ago).

I realize this.  If he had more games and was healthy, he’d be a top 15 pick and probably the top pass rusher in the draft imo.

We already have him. His name is AJ Epenesa.   The Bills need another vet that has been there and done that. A legitimate terror to a QB.

No, thanks. I want Boogie Basham, better everything.

Right up until he takes on a power RB - which you admit is a con as his technique is not great and has to retire again.

His longevity due to the illness (concussions) is part of the issue and basically your Cons list reads like a billion other middling DEs.  He is Shaq Lawson or AJ with less experience.  He has speed, but lacks power and struggled against Tackles that could get a hold of him.

Again - he has potential to grow, but the Red Flags are all there that he will be done with Football with another hit.  Why start out with a guy in that boat.  I might take a chance if he was far and away a stud player, but for a guy projected in the late 1st or early 2nd that has a number of flaws - I would let others take that risk.

He’s projected as a late 1st early 2nd because of his injury history....not because of his ability.

that said....the injuries are scary.  If he can avoid injury, he’s a steal at the end of the 1st imo..... but he’s not my first choice because of his injuries.

I don't know much about this guy, but his "retirement" is a medical retirement. I'm assuming what this really means is, he's a young kid(21) that had a couple injuries in a short amount of time, ankle injury, car accident, concussion.... and he decided to stop playing football to reevaluate what he wanted to do in life. Makes sense when these injuries happen when you're 18 and 19 years old. See link below

https://247sports.com/college/miami/Article/Jaelan-Phillips-Miami-football-No-1-recruit-retired-defensive-end-injuries-NFL-Draft-156544966/

Also, his football injury history isn't even that bad. An ankle injury his freshman year, wrist surgery because of an accident that was unrelated to football ( I didn't look too much into it, but it looks like it was somewhere between his freshman and sophomore season.) Then a concussion in his sophomore season. TBF, that's a lot of pain to deal with in a short amount of time when you're only 18/19 years old. So basically 2 football related injuries in a 3+ year period. That's not that bad.

Then he goes ahead and transfers to a tougher conference (ACC) and plays pretty darn good in 2020 after not playing for almost 2 years.

Based off the highlight reel, he looks pretty good. Fast too. Good tackler, excellent size. Pull the trigger if he's there at 30.

OL no... He really isn't.

I'll worry about the future in the future.

Right now this team is vying for a Super Bowl Championship.

You seemed to miss my first point that they need 2 guys...

Having watched this I’m skeptical about every front 7 defender from that Miami defense as a full time starting prospect. If we’re looking into Phillips as just a pass rushing specialist that’s another thing, but.....

LOL, you were watching Javonte Williams weren't you. That's another player I'd be more than happy to take at 30.

On almost half the plays in his highlight reel, he's completely unblocked. Looks like a player, but how are opposing defenses just leaving him alone? His TFL & Sack totals look to be inflated by that.

Or he may be out of football again...

True that. He could get injured....similar to every player that laces them up.

Higher ceiling than most @30.
Higher risk than most @30.

Again, not my first choice, but he’s as talented a pass rusher as you’ll find @30 imo

1 game = a career.

Did you happen to see that picture of Vincent Jackson standing next to Von Miller?

Jaelan Phillips Edge  6'5  265lbs  #2 Edge player on many lists.

Pro's

He has a great swim move

Upper body posture is solid

Really good shedding people.

Long Limbed with good hands

Student of the game. Reads plays well. He does his homework and he has said he loves just watching film on people.

Amazing first step

Size is perfect for the NFL level with room for more growth

Never gives up on plays. He will chase players till out of reach.

He impressed against good teams

Con's

Needs to build more upper lower body strength. Not a ton but some.

Lower body technique is a struggle at times

While he did well against agile tackles, he had his struggles against heavier stronger tackle

He tends to loose the edge at times

His hitting the player is soft which is good with hitting QB's in todays NFL but will struggle against Power RB's

Temper..

He does not play mean like the typical DE

Who might take him before us?

Giants they are looking for D'Line help but I think at 11 they get Barmore

Jets Who knows what direction they go but this could be one of them. or they could trade this pick.

Highlights

Enjoy

Eddited

Con. 20 games played... its been a while

Injury.. Yes he had a major concussion but read what he says.. it scared him as much as it injured him.  He has been working at his game for a long time now with NFL level retired trainers. Injury is not an issue or he would of never been cleared.

Again.. I did not post this to say we should get him.. I am just saying its possible and there are people in these forums that like him for the pick.

I respect everyone's opinions on scouts like this... so should you

Like him. Watched a lot of him today. But the concussions and the one year of production plus the fact it is a scheme that gives edge rushers ample opportunities.

He is the best of the rushers I have watched so for but I have a borderline 1st / 2nd on him at this stage. I don't have many true 1sts.

Bashman is a late day 2 project according to all scout reports.

His upside is questionable.

He was great at the Senior Bowl, will rise. I think he’ll perform well at the Combine as well. Look at his tape, tell me he’s not explosive. Can play inside or out. Put him at LE and Epenesa on the right, much better than Phillips.

No....his burst and athleticism is not better than Phillips.  Not sure why you would say that.  Basham reminds me of Shaq

He’s not as explosive as Phillips.

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/carlos-basham-jr-nfl-draft-player-profile-wake-forest-edge-rusher/

Basham’s main mode of success is his mix of IQ, power, and leverage, but against bigger blockers who match his power, he doesn’t have enough athletic freedom to get an edge. Basham was dominated by Clemson tackle Jackson Carman this season. NFL tackles are more consistent with their size and power, so Basham could have trouble at the next level. His foundation gives him a solid floor, but he may never be an impact pass rusher.
