Urban Meyer to Texas?

It’s really perfect for him. Big wealthy program underperforming in a state with a ton of talent and where he has existing relationships with high school coaches. Plus, part of the rumor mill is that Texas is about to seriously open the pocketbook.  Also, the other job he’d want is ND, and it doesn’t look like that will be available anytime soon. USC has been talked about too but that job doesn’t seem as attractive to Urban for whatever reason (Shelly?). I just hope he doesn’t take Pantoni and Coach Mick from Ohio State.

I don’t think those guys would go... Ohio state would match any dollars and I think them following him the first time may have more to do with Will muschamp and not wanting to work for him. Working for urban was a resume builder and now they have it made at osu and Day is a much easier guy to work for.  I can totally see urban going there for 5 years or so because he loves the “build” and already has all of his recruiting ties. I hope not though, I enjoy taking the recruits out of that state.

That is what makes me think he won’t take it. I don’t think it is the right decision health wise and he will ultimately come to that conclusion. But I do love the fit.

Here’s one of the articles that is causing the increased buzz:

'Scouting real estate'...they'll build a retirement home, and the Meyers will live in one wing of it. 😁

That would be a record short time for one of Urbs scandals to come to light.

But I am predicting fibromyalgia..........gotta be some kind of silent killer where the doctor looks into your eyes like Larry David to see if you're just tryna get disability pay.

Urb and his illnesses are definitely Curb material.

They have one in Florida already but who wouldn’t love to live in Austin? I know Shelley would like it better then Columbus, where they live part of the time since their grandkids are here and son is close by at UC. But she hates the cold.

There is no excuse for Texas not to be one of the best programs in the country. Maybe the best college “town,” monster enrollment, and arguably the best football state in the country.  Seems like it should be such an easy job.

You know the saying "Everything is bigger in Texas"?

So is the booster meddling.

I remember when Saban's Wife Terry was "spotted" in Austin looking for Real Estate.

How's that Saban rebuild going at Texas?

Ever count how many major programs are in Texas?

Now count how many in Ohio.   Or Indiana.  Or Alabama.   Or South Carolina.

It won't be easy for someone to really turn around U of Texas permanently..........the in-state competition for talent is cut-throat and well funded.........you can't own the state like a lot of the current football factories do.

And in Texas.......you can't cheat as easily as you can in some places either..........they have a RICH history of blowing each other in for violations...........it's quite comical actually.........and a good reason for Urban to avoid Austin.

Texas

Texas A & M

TCU

Texas Tech

Houston

SMU

Baylor

All have spent time in the top 25 in the past few years. All are in Texas. And then there are places like Rice, which sucks but which is also the best undergraduate academic institution in the state. There is no version of Rice in Ohio, Florida, or Michigan (there is on in Tennessee—Vanderbilt). Bear in mind that the old SWC was one of the very best conferences in the country, and Arkansas was the only team in it that wasn’t from Texas.  As for “college towns,” I think a ton of Texas-born and bred college football players love places like College Station, which is the worst college town I have ever been to. Point is, the fact that Austin is a prime touring stop for every good indie/punk/you-name-it band ain’t much of an appeal for the Andy Daltons and Ryan Tannehills of the world.

I forgot to include Baylor! Just added it above.

Hearing that he is going to turn it down

What percentage of the population can turn down an $84 million offer? This is as astounding as NBA contracts. It’s like “yes, I know that’s a winning Powerball ticket, but I need to get this campfire started.”   Just confounding......

Quality of life won out. And his wife who doesn’t want him coaching for health reasons. Oh and Fox gave him a huge raise! He’s awesome on tv, really. Cushy gig too.

When one gets older one's perspective on life often changes. What is the point of making $84 million rather than say $10 million when you can do whatever you want in your life at the lower figure than at the higher figure. Urban Meyer has been in the consuming coaching business most of his adult life. I'm not saying that he is old because he is still capable of taking over a college program and turning it around. But why do it if the stresses of the job jeopardizes his health or limits his ability to have a lifestyle that makes his wife, children and grandkids more happy? I'm not making any judgments. He can do whatever he wants. But my point is that it would be very understandable why he wouldn't want to get back on that whirlwind and totally consuming coaching lifestyle again, especially when he has other options to choose.

He gets to live on Siesta Key and have lunch at Captain Curts Oyster Bar. That alone makes me jealous!  The dollars surprise/impress me, the decision does not. I agree with the decision, I’m all for happiness over extreme wealth.

It’s a serious OSU bar, and he lives nearby on the key. He mentions it during interviews. Very close friends have an “extra house” not 5 minutes away on the bay we have stayed at multiple times. Stumbling distance. Apparently Urban’s daughter also lives on Siesta.

Lived in The Landings not 10 minutes away when we first moved to SRQ. My goal is to get back there and do it on my terms. A guy can dream!  Go wifey! She makes stuff happen!

I think he officially  turned it down today. There are indeed a finite number of holes that can be drilled in one’s head. His medical issue is still there. Siesta key sounds like a very nice place to retire.

At some point in time, more money than you could ever spend is enough. I wish him well, and know he’s making more than 99.9% of us ever will just doing an easy TV gig.

But I get his type. My wife could never retire. We left our kids rec hoops game about 25 years ago and her phone rang. We all had to be quiet while she saved some deal. She hung up at the red light and turned to the kids in the back and said “THAT is MY sport.”  She doesn’t seem capable of retiring.

I get Urban wanting back in. He doesn’t NEED back in, but he’s driven. I hope for the sake of his health and his family doing TV is ENOUGH for him.
