This town of 170,000 replaced some cops with medics and mental health workers. It's worked for over 30 years

(CNN)Around 30 years ago, a town in Oregon retrofitted an old van, staffed it with young medics and mental health counselors and sent them out to respond to the kinds of 911 calls that wouldn't necessarily require police intervention.

In the town of 172,000, they were the first responders for mental health crises, homelessness, substance abuse, threats of suicide -- the problems for which there are no easy fixes. The problems that, in the hands of police, have often turned violent.

Today, the program, called CAHOOTS, has three vans, more than double the number of staffers and the attention of a country in crisis.
CAHOOTS is already doing what police reform advocates say is necessary to fundamentally change the US criminal justice system -- pass off some responsibilities to unarmed civilians.

Chicago erupts in July 4 gunfire -- with girl, 7, and boy, 14, among those killed

"We are making progress ... but we have to do better," Mayor Lori Lightfoot says

By Brie Stimson | Fox News

A 7-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were among those fatally shot Saturday night as Chicago erupted in gun violence on Independence Day.

The evening included two attacks that each had eight victims, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The girl, identified by her family as Natalie Wallace, was outside her grandmother’s home at a Fourth of July party in the city's Austin neighborhood around 7 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up and three men got out and started shooting indiscriminately, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The girl was shot in her head and pronounced dead after she was rushed to a hospital, police said, according to Chicago's FOX 32.

A 32-year-old man shot during the same attack was in fair condition, FOX 32 reported.

“Tonight, a 7-year-old girl in Austin joined a list of teenagers and children whose hopes and dreams were ended by the barrel of a gun,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot wrote on Twitter. “We cannot grow numb to this. We are making progress in slowing shootings, but we have to do better, every single one of us.”

What they need are new ideas and strong leadership, a revolution in Chicago public policy.  They need to have liberal democrats run this to their plan for the entire country.

Wait, what?  Dems have been in charge for decades?  Now what?

Nah, man. They need to make Chicago a gun-free zone. Maybe even put up some signs.

Replaced SOME cops..............Not all cops.  Agreed that society is still somewhat primitive when it comes to issues of the mind but there will always be a need for law enforcement.  There will always be someone who wants to test the will of others and the code of society.  A jail cell should always be available for that person.

The last thing I want to see is less funding for police . More funding for mental health and social workers to  go to appropriate calls .

Would this include re-opening mental hospitals that were closed in the 60s through early 80s?

She's in way over her head.  Murders and shootings are up over last year and trending to total about 700 (murders) for 2020.  As a Dem she's basically powerless to do anything because more aggressive policing in the higher crime areas doesn't sell within the party.  In Chicago and in Illinois, it's absolutely party first.

Yep, let's defund the police in liberal cities. Let's see how that goes.

I’m actually all for it. Just not in my city. If the Left wants to run these experiments, let them. It took less than three weeks for CHOP to come crumbling down. What’s the result of defunding the police anyway, other than having less officers on the street? So....let’s pick a city and have the police stay in the station for a few months. I’m willing to see what happens, record the results, and they can do an official assessment.

More mental health funding would be huge. Unfortunately, due to the lack of resources, the only current way to deal with many mental health crises is to push it off to the criminal justice system, which is not where many - if not most - of these people need to be.
