When I got into my car accident years ago and had to go to the hospital, the first thing the doctor asked me was "What brought you here?" I said "the ambulance". Whether you do auto transfer into an IRA or auto transfer into an investment account or savings account, put money aside for retirement and your own needs before spending on current luxuries (new cars, new boats, fancy tv's, etc). In 25 years I can see his point. Dollar cost averaging really works. Which leads to my father and grandfather's other favorite saying: "Remember man as you go by, as you are now so once was I, as I am now so you shall be, prepare for death and follow me." Kind of a bummer of a saying/life lesson, but as I have watched my grandfather and father pass away, I realize the need to try and improve each day for my kids so they can do the same for their children in the future. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There have been too many times where I say to myself "I can hold it for 20 until I get home". Well that 20 turns into 60 because of an accident or road construction....then you're racing home.
