Many have said, the NFL scouting season goes April to April.  We say this last season as one of the most now polarizing figures among Bills fans, Doug Whaley was fired shortly after the draft.  The same fate happened for John Dorsey and even Dave Gettleman.

Chances are we’ll probably see some movement in front offices around the league very soon.   That’s makes me wonder, do you think Doug Whaley works for another team this season?

In my opinion, Whaley was a train wreck at GM.  He did a very poor job building a team and had no vision long term.  This is evidenced by the Bills very mediocre record.

He was very poor drafting and made some high risk picks which never panned out.  If anyone wants to debate me on this go ahead.... Doug was not good at drafting, even though some Bills fans want to trick themselves into believing he was.

I do think though a good role for Whaley would be working in Pro Personnel.  He did make several good low-end/street free agent signings.  This is where he excels.

So do you think Doug Whaley works for another NFL team season?

How much of a teams W-L record is a result of GM decisions vs coaching?  Whaley’s tenure overlapped  with the Rex Ryan train wreck so I tend to give him a pass for that era.

I have to say that some of your takes are very interesting.  Like the continuing insistence on Russ Brandon running drafts for Bills...

I voted in some capacity but it is depedndent on him wanting to. He had GM interviews this offseason so I am assuming that he wants to. He can go back to the Steelers pretty easily. They think highly of him.

Kind of depends if he thinks waiting it out another year might lead to more GM opportunities whereas going in at a lower level (which I always thought was the most likely outcome) might knock him out of consideration.

I know from my agent contact that around the league the view of the job Whaley did in Buffalo is higher than the view in Buffalo.  He basically ran a .500 operation after years of the Bills being a sub .500 organisation.  That gets more credit outside than it gets here. Though the league feels similar to TBD about the Sammy trade - it is a black mark against him.

That is in line with what I hear, granted a lot of my other intel comes from Pittsburgh. Whaley has a pretty good reputation around the league.

No that was a joke.  But what I said what that the 2008 and 2009 drafts are on Brandon’s resume since he was GM in title

I voted yes in some capacity. He did a better job than we give him credit for. The Pornmeister will be working again soon.

He made some good pro personnel moves but also overspent in free agency and put the team in salary cap he’ll.  Then Look at drafts.  Not one player he selected as GM has ever made a Pro Bowl.  Who was his best selection - Preston Brown?  Ron Darby?  Nice players but not hits.

He made a reckless selection in Sammy Watkins which essentially cost him his job.  Then there’s the mismanagement of the QB situation.

I hope Whaley gets another shot, this time in a real GM capacity.  Not the limited crap he got in Buffalo, while dealing with morons like Marone and Rex as well as a clueless first year owner trying to get a handle on things.

Yep he made some mistakes, but also picked up some NFL guys too ...remember Jerry Hughes, Richie etc. Enough hits and misses that we were a mediocre .500 team in reality. But not terrible like we all fall into the trap of sometimes.

I'm not going to debate you, but I think the evidence of Whaley's eye for talent is playing on rosters all around the league.  Including a bunch of teams that were contending for championships or seem to have their talent arrow pointing up.

The GM Killer for any guy is coaching change.

Who was the best player Doug Whaley drafted?  I don’t disagree some of the players he drafted have been nice players,  but the same can be said for most GM’s.  Doug failed to identify and draft impact players in the draft.  Not even 1.

Here some stats for you....0 Pro Bowl players on his resume.

Buddy Nix was the GM at the time of the Hughes trade.  But yes, Whaley made some good signings with some free agents and many good lower end free agent signings.  That’s why i feel there’s a spot for him in the NFL.  Just not as GM
