American side.

People just like the Canadian side because they can look over at the beautiful American side from there. Goat Island, Three Sisters Island, the Falls - simply a beautiful park.

Never have been to the American side.

They are going to dewater it again... I am sure The Corps will be involved... From 2016:

I guess if it wasn't maintained, that talus slope would build...

They're dewatering to replace the bridges.  I don't think they've ever maintained the talus.

That pile in '69 I think was altered for aesthetic purposes.  But that was the first time that pile may have been touched by humans.

That '69 pic, it's pretty high.  I am sure they will do some rearranging.  But, you are mostly right... Not gonna dewater unless there are other major projects.  Like going into an engine for a timing chain... Get the water pump too... ;)

BTW... Ontario is digger bigger power culverts, bigger diversion as we speak... It just flies under radar.

Are you referring to the Niagara Tunnel Project, the 10 kilometre hydro tunnel that was built in 2006-2013?  Amazing project.  Recently there's been talk of draining the hydro canal that was built in the early 1900s in order to clear rockfalls that cut down on flow.  Last I heard they were unsure if the gate up towards McLeod Rd. could be operated without some remediation on its equipment, since it's been years from the last working of it.

More efficient diversion of water.  Thought they were still digging... My how time flies and get things done when they want to.

Drain one, keep it closed.  They got the new one. Or keep one in standby... Why both? ;)

The Canadian reservoir is that small that if the need for power generation demands and all generators in the Beck 1 and 2 complexes are in operation, the existing water sources (1900s canal, and the two 'blast and excavate' tunnels of the early 1950s) could not have kept the reservoir full.  Couple that with both tunnels from the 1950s showing reduced flow and some deterioration, Ontario Hydro (now called Hydro One, I believe) had plans for the 2006 project back in the 80s.  I have been told at least one of the 50s tunnels cannot be dewatered due to concerns over more damage occurring in the 'dry' state.  Rather than tie up the board with this civil engineering, email me at doccharlie42<at>gmail<dot>com if you have more questions or want to discuss the project.

I mean both sides are nice

Just as you said, for views, both sides are nice.   If I was going after pictures, I would consider both.   BTW, one of the best things I have done with respect to the falls was stay at the Embassy suites on the Canadian side.   The Falls view rooms are amazing.    When I first got in the room I spent an hour looking out over the falls and the city, Niagara Falls, NY.  I spent my first 10 years in NF and we made frequent trips to the Falls back then.   I also spent a lot of hours on the upper Niagara River boating.   The view covers all that.

If you go to Embassy suites online I believe you can sign up for deals.   I regularly get notices of deals for a room in the $75 to US $95 dollar range, which include a fair amount of credits for a variety of things.   The US dollar is strong compared to the Canadien Dollar at the moment. The Embassy is next door to the Canadien Casino.  Just be aware that their are different views so you have to get a Falls view and it cost a bit more.  Add $20 to those prices I listed and note that are typically off weekend.   The credits include a decent breakfast, credits at the Casino's, restaurant credits and site coupons.

I always considered it a shame as to how the immediate area to the Falls ended up on the US side.   Back in the 50's it had the "It's a Wonderful Life,"  Bedford Falls feel to it.  I can't see that without thinking of downtown NF.    The Sears in NF was one block from the bridge to Goat Island, and the city was full of local businesses.   Also, you could hear the roar of the Falls a mile away.  There was way more water going over it back then, so it was quite a bit louder.

One a side subject, while looking at the Falls at the Embassy, I was struck by how the Falls actually ended up.  For miles it runs up the gorge in a straight line and then all of a sudden it widens to the point it creates two falls.  The American falls and the Horseshoe Falls.  I always wonder why it ended up as two and so wide instead of just one.   It would have to be water dynamics versus ground structure but I would have liked to see a documentary on how the last bit got formed.   Maybe the Whirlpool was like that at one time.   If anyone happens to know of a documentary or a book that covers that, please let me know.

    Anyway, enjoy your trip.

I understand.  Ontario needs to check it's growth since 1959.

That damage is real.  The lock I work at was built in 1960.  Fully dewatered in 1979.  But, in 2014, we only dewateted the gate bays individually... If whole chamber was dewatered at once, they were  afraid of failure.  Hydrostatic pressure is keeping the project together.

I was 12 in 69 so I remember more about it than some of you.  They originally proposed removing the talus, but when they dewatered they realized that the talus pile was holding up the face of the American falls.  So they did nothing to it. They installed a bunch of sensors  to allow them to detect any rock movements and  be able to protect the tourists.

They are dewatering it this time to rebuild the bridges to Goat Island.  Last time I was there in 2013, Luna Island was closed for renovation.

Thanx Wacka... I was one.:D Still am. ;)

So in essence that talus will just pile up.  Obviously the slope of the talus will cause it to slide down.

What happens when it keep on chewing towards BFLo south... The Falls that is.  Does that mean the American Falls will just turn into ugly rapids.  That 1969 pic, not much falls there with that Talus slope.  Again, I understand at a certain angle the talus will slip away on down...

Anyway... It just seems aesthetically unpleasant if there is too much talus.

You know, that's what I remember also about the talus but a quick search didn't reveal any sources.  This article gives a decent timeline of the dewatering and they claimed it was put to a vote and people favored leaving it be.

It sounds like the engineers were willing to remove it but the vote ended the discussion.

The jet boats leave from Niagara on the Lake.  They go towards the whirlpool, but turn around before they get there.  The local's don't like them because of the noise.

They do donuts in the whirlpool. Then go a little above the whirlpool and sit in an eddy for a bit then go back.

They also leave from lewiston, ny
