ALF
Walmart is taking a direct shot at Amazon and making checkout lanes obsolete Walmart is rolling out a new technology in its stores that enables shoppers to scan and pay for their items without checkout lanes, registers, or cashiers. Here's how it works: shoppers download Walmart's "Scan & Go" app, then scan the barcodes of the items they wish to purchase. Once they are finished shopping, they click a button to pay for their goods and show their digital receipt to a store greeter on their way out the door. https://www.aol.com/article/finance/2017/08/07/walmart-is-taking-a-direct-shot-at-amazon-and-making-checkout-la/23069214/ what could possibly go wrong Edited August 8, 2017 by ALF

KermitMcDermott
They may eliminate checkout lines but then there's going to be a line for door greeters to check receipts. Edited August 12, 2017 by KermitMcDermott

PromoTheRobot
Weren't they working on RFID tags on everything? That way you can just push your cart through a scanner and, boom, you're done.
ExiledInIllinois
Slow march to automation. Gotta trim labor in the service sector, etc... Forward thinking... Boomers are going to be kicking in the next 10,20 years in droves. We can't do business the way we did in the past... Automation to handle the population bounces. Unless, you want to bring in immigrants. How well is the labor shortage working for say Germany & Western Europe? @ least we are forward planning. Take the good w/the bad, embrace the new economy and change w/it... OR else you can change against your will. We aren't going back in time for 20 years then be caught off guard with a labor shortage in a crunch.
