The cap has been going up significantly so that $44 mil should probably get to $50 easily. Given we are finally out from EJ, he's dead man walking and playing this year for anyone to give him a chance as a back up. The other thing that strikes me is even though Carpenter took a paycut for this year, I still wouldn't be surprised if a guy like the FSU kid is there in the late rounds for us to draft him and cut Carpenter this year. They have 42 of their 51 signed next year and it is a soft cap so they can do a lot of creative things to move money around to fit all three. With multiple teams having Carp like problems last season. Especially in PAT's I don't see him lasting too the later rounds. Would be great if the Bills could snag him late. But IMO he won't last that long. carrying two place kickers is a waste of a roster spot more so than a minimal $$$ savings. with the new rule of placing the ball at the 25, kick to the goal line and let your ST do their job. This now makes a ton more sense in regards to Glenn and Gilmore. I think Whaley has assured both these players they are going to get paid, they just need to play out the season till Whaley gets some cap space. Brandon Marshall (LB for the Broncos, not the WR) potentially, Muhammad Wilkerson, Calais Campbell, Trumaine Johnson, David DeCastro, Riley Reiff, Dont'a Hightower, Melvin Ingram, Michael Floyd, Dontari Poe, Fletcher Cox, and a list of others. By signing their own, it cuts down on the number of pricey FAs they need to add. They'll make it work if they had to sign all 3. Especially with TT, almost all QB contracts are HUGE number wise, but there's almost always an out somewhere around the midpoint. For example, Osweiler's contract could only be a 2 year, $37 million deal instead of 4 for $72 million. 2018 and 2019 are 0% guaranteed on that deal. Gilmore and Glenn's deals could be structured with bonuses that don't overwhelm the team, for example Gilmore gets his big roster bonus in 2018, Glenn gets one in 2019, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Now, if these guys do their jobs well, and god forbid we actually make the playoffs, don't expect a big splash next year in free agency. Sign these guys and hopefully this year and next year's drafts gets us three starters. I believe Whaley's nature is to emulate the Steelers, and Packers MO of resigning guys for the second contract, and cheap labor in the draft. Third contract is where you squeeze them and they take less for security. That's the NFL now with the CBA. That is why I understand these guys wanting a great 2nd contract because for most players it's their only real payday when they are at their peak. Just look at Ferguson. 10 years, never missed a snap, and the jets want him to take a 50% paycut. Makes sense to retire. If I were him, I'd sit out this year, and shop his services to a deep playoff team next year for 10+ mil per year and get 1-2 more years of income. Same with Calvin Johnson. Sit out, and go to a Packers, Pats, Steelers, or whatever team he thinks has the best shot for a SB ring. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't think there's any new monster contracts slated to go into the cap this year- the 2016 bump was driven by a tv deal finally rolling in.
