Josina Anderson: Mario open to pay cut to stay with Bills

it makes sense to me though. he's not going to get the type of offers he did last time. he's coming of a bad year, and has failed to live up to the big contract. plus if he renegotiates he will probably be able to get most of the pay as a bonus due to restructuring. i'm sure this move was financially motivated. maybe his agent found out that the money wasn't out there and all of the sudden this comes out and he changes his story. talking about team and family and all that stuff. but if the price is right i don't see why not, he can be a talent when he feels like playing.

Ain't happenin'

@SalSports

Meeting Mario half-way isn't going to happen. Rex says defense will be "fully pregnant" with his scheme in 2016: http://www.wgr550.com/Rex-Bills-defense-will-be-fully-pregnant-in-2016/22504777

We've gone from showing people babies to fully pregnant. That's sounds backwards to me. By 2018 we'll be horny teenagers scouring the internet for porn. Maybe TRBJ is ahead of the curve after all.

Restructuring Mario and Rex adapting to Marios style makes sense. Why have dead cap money and then have to get another DE? Let Mario do what he does best, rush the passer and keep containment. And no, im not happy about Marios attitude and not playing to his full potential last year. Hopefully that can be in the rear view and we can move forward, imo.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Mostly because it doesn't make sense to build your defensive philosophy around a 31 year old proven non-leader.

At this point no it doesnt.

He might be too temperamental for the Patriot way. You know....as in do your job.

Randy Moss. Winning has a way of bringing out the best in players.

If Rex's system was successful and Mario was the only one who looked worse, I'd be more than ready to move on. But last year, the system sucked and destroyed a dominant defense.

You keep making this Randy Moss point as if already-first-ballot-WR's catching passes from first-ballot-QB's are in any shape or form analogous to over the hill pass rushing specialists who don't match the defensive fronts NE traditionally employs.

Destroyed a dominant defense? 1. The 2014 D was good, not dominant. 2. 2015 was a disappointment no doubt, but acting as if they were terrible with no good moments is a huge overstatement IMO.

You're completely wrong about Mario not being a leader. He is consistently working with Dareus, Williams, and Hughes on the sidelines with Techniques and game situations.

Just because a guy doesn't scream like an idiot all the time doesn't mean he isn't a leader. But I'm sure Mario had nothing to do with guys like Hughes and Dareus developing in Buffalo.

Also, it's wonderful that we've now reverted back to pretending the scheme, and scheme alone had the biggest impact on a defense ripped with injuries. :wallbash:

Well, your account doesn't jive with many many first hand accounts from media and team mates both past and present.

NE has primarily been a base 40 front team for the past 3 years.

Mario would be a great fit at LDE for them...not sure they'd pay him, as they already have Chandler Jones, Jabaal Sheard, and Rob Ninkovich, but yeah, they play the "correct" front for him.

Chandler Jones is the closest thing they have to a prototype like Mario, and he's far more versatile. I'm just not seeing the fit.

It's so funny how the narrative changes when we want to give up on a player/ coach. We were 4th in total yards and points. The only 3 teams better than us made the playoffs.

We led the NFL in sacks with 54 (I'd say that is dominant). We finished second to last with 21 this year. We beat Aaron Rodgers with a high school offense. Our defense was maybe not the greatest defense ever but it was pretty damn good.

This year's defense sucked in comparison and the players weren't put in the best position to make plays. To pretend anything else is just wrong IMO.

Good teams have a way of making talent for their teams. Bad teams force their system on talent.

And here come the excuses!!! Who was missing during the 1st NE game?

They weren't close to being as good as they were in 2014. No one is going to argue anything different. Talk to me about dominance of the 2014 D vs. Brady. That's a real measuring stick for where any Bills' D. is with regard to dominance.

Exactly. He keeps talking about attacking but when he gets handled one on one with a TE, what do you do with him?

Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with his age, or diminishing skills..I think it was all attitude with Mario last season. I remember re-watching a game, keying in, speicifically on him...I think it was the Redskins game...he just was just playing very half-heartedly, and his body language, as the defense was setting up for their next snap was showing utter disgust and frustration...

It seemed, especially the first half of the season, other defensive players were kind of Mario's side in this battle of wills...but as the season wore on, more and more started to "buy in", leaving Mario as the only one still struggling to adapt to the changes. It happens in all types of jobs, when there are changes...football players are no different. It sounds as though, now that the season is over, Mario has had a little time to reflect...maybe he now realizes his attitude was part of his problem, and also, that he isn't going to make near the money he was slated to make in Buffalo, anywhere else.

Personally, if the numbers can be worked out, I want him back. They are going to have to pay somebody to play that position...Mario is way too good of a ball player to give up on that easily... particularly if he is willing to accept a reasonable contract.

Well, we gave up 500 yards to them this year.
