the only one in over his head is Bucky.

the Pegula's are wildly successful business people.

This. They are experts at running a successful business. Sabres have some good young talent and will only get better. Bills could have been a playoff team this year. They will be better next year or Rex will be gone. I agree Bucky doesn't know squat.

The most striking thing about this article is how it tries to fit everything into a single narrative. Nobody denies there were some growing pains with the Sabres early on, and nobody is denying that there are problems with the Bills right now. But how that adds up to "the Pegulas may be in over their heads" now is a mystery.

Look at the last two paragraphs:

"From the outside, it appeared people entrenched with the Bills and Sabres too often were more concerned with preserving their jobs than working toward the greater good. So far, in case you didn’t notice, the greater good hasn’t been nearly good enough for either team.

Sad but true, for the Bills, it could get worse before it get better."

He's basically admitting that the Sabres are, in fact, getting better. I really don't know what's going to happen with the Bills, but the Sabres have a really bright future and are absolutely on the right track. You don't get that at all from this piece.

I'm guessing he's referring to running sports franchises

They may field losing teams, but at least with the Sabres they got to be making a lot of $$$$$. The roster is cheap and ticket prices have jacked a lot since TP bought the team. Give them time with the Bills. I wouldn't be surprised in a couple years they chop the roster and jack prices up a lot, especially if a new stadium comes about, to increase profits

Sabres turn around gets too much credit. they are still 13th in the East, not even close to playoffs

For the most part, the people who buy sports franchise are just insanely rich people who have the money it takes to buy the team, but they almost always earned their money in other types of businesses. A sports franchise is not just another business and success in one area of business does not necessarily translate into success in the sports business. Also, given the NFL's socialist system, even crappy teams like the Bills make money, so while the team may be unsuccessful on the field they are likely still making money or appreciating in value, or both. Sports franchises are mostly toys for their ultra rich owners. The best sports franchise owners are the ones who buy the team, hire good personnel to run it and just sit back and watch the money roll in. If the Pegulas depended the opinions of Brandon and/or Whaley to hire Rex, then the stupid hiring is not their fault, although they should look at is as an indication of the quality of management that Brandon and/or Whaley bring to the table. I can understand the Pegulas getting conned by Ryan, but it is unforgiveable if Brandon did.

Don't know and don't care about the Sabres, but when it comes to the Bills, Pegs is relying on a used car salesman who knows nothing about football, a junior GM/glorified scout, and Rex f'n Ryan. He's absolutely over his head right now, and that's why he needs a czar/consultant to take a serious look at the organization.

The rich don't run franchises, they hire people to do it. The difficulty is finding the right people. What defines the right people? They win. More often than not, this is only defined by looking back in time.

Great Post!!! This is spot on; give them time!

So are almost all NFL owners (and NBA and MLB owners, for that matter). It does not mean they know how to run a professional sports franchise.

Trump discloses his financials in his book crippled america and from his financial statement his net worth is over 8 billion. Is 3.8 billion after buying the Bills and selling all that land?

$3.8B is post-purchase, and doesn't account for the 240k acres of land he hasn't yet sold off, which hasn't been assessed to date. Keep in mind he sold 76k acres for $1.75B.

You're probably looking at $8B in net worth

There was a lot of talk that Pegula had a larger net worth than Trump prior to buying the Bills.

Net worth does not decrease when purchasing an asset. Just changes the composition of the assets used to calculate net worth.

The fact that he asserts that the Sabres "are going nowhere" is utterly beyond comprehension. He was against the tank last season too. It's almost as if the guy doesn't understand what the Sabres are doing whatsoever.

 Bucky is worse than some posters, expecting the Sabres to "turn it around" in one season, like Jack Eichel is supposed to be Wayne Gretzky at 19. Larry Felser and Jim Kelley must be spinning like tops in the grave if they knew what drivel gets published in their paper.

Really? How long has Pegula owned the Sabres? I thought it had been quite a few years, but then, I don't live in Buffalo anymore and don't follow the Sabres closely.

Exactly. If Bucky Gleason could go back in time, I'm sure he would be whining about the 1987 Bills team that went 7-8 after three straight seasons winning no more than four games even though they had started to put some nice pieces in place and were clearly a team on the rise. I'm sure he would've cherry picked stats to tell everyone to curb their enthusiasm and that they were going nowhere and that they still sucked. Bucky Gleason is even worse than Sullivan because at least Sullivan was the original. Gleason is blatantly trying to rip off Sullivan. It's beyond comical. The guy is a complete jabroni. And I stick up for everybody- even Mike Rodak.

I could explain it to you but I don't have the energy. In short, he tried seeing through the current path for a few years, it was going nowhere, so they went for a full-on rebuild. With respect to the Sabres, I literally wouldn't change one move Pegula/TIm Murray have made. Is it guaranteed to work? Of course not. Some things already haven't- Leino, Ehrhoff, etc.- but everything has made sense at the time. It is an extremely effectively run organization. Anyone who follows the Sabres closely is thrilled with their current path. The next ten years are going to be very enjoyable for Sabres fans.
