America’s most prominent culture-makers obsess over identity. They elevate prom dress choices to matters of national debate. And that’s why people who still possess a sense of reason, proportion, and manners (on both sides of the political aisle) need to push back

 Reason can’t cede the public square to rage. Sometimes a prom dress is just a prom dress. But Lam’s tweet wasn’t “just” a tweet. It was a symbol of the incoherent anger that is tearing this nation apart.

 

Definitely read the whole thing. And kudos to Daum for not backing down. What David French accurately calls “perhaps the dumbest story you’ve ever heard — a story that is stupid with a heaping helping of malice on the side” made the Washington Post:

 

While the family lives in a predominantly white suburb of Salt Lake City, Dawes said she has made an effort to give her daughter a multicultural upbringing. When Daum was in the third grade, her mother pulled her out of her school and enrolled her in a more diverse school in Salt Lake City. “I wanted her to have that exposure,” Dawes said.

She also said that Daum has grown up with a multicultural extended family. Several of her nieces and nephews are of Pacific Island descent.

The mother found it particularly unsettling that “an adult male has attacked her for what she’s wearing,” something that has nothing to do with “her talent or her mind.”

“I’m proud of her for standing her ground because she didn’t do anything wrong,” Dawes said.

In the days since the photos went viral, Daum said she has made a point of researching the significance of the dress in Chinese history and culture. She also says she has learned about the velocity and reach of messages on social media, and the importance of being able to see her own posts from a different lens.

“This does give me a better sense of choice and being careful in what I say in posts and how it can be perceived differently,” she said.  “It’s taught me to be extra cautious because you don’t want people to see it the wrong way.”

But at the same time, she said, “there are people who are going to find something to offend them no matter what it is.”

“I’d wear it again,” she said of the dress.

 

Good for her. Twitter’s management attempted to keep the mob enraged by spotlighting this weekend’s idiocy as a “Twitter Moment,” but since the cycle that Internet shaming is now completely predictable, that may finally be diluting its impact:

 

• Random crank is outraged over minutia, tweets random crankery.
• The outrage mob amplifies said crankery 140 characters at a time – or simply by hitting the retweet button.
• A few days later, faced with thousands of thousands of hateful responses, the victim apologizes, and the mob’s thirst for blood* is temporarily slaked…
• …until the outrage mob finds a new skull to collect.

 

 

Also diluting the outrage mob? As Jordan Peterson advises Daum, “Don’t apologize. That will merely be read as an indication of your guilt. You’re innocent. Maintain your stance,” adding “Ignore them. They’re contemptible bullies masking their cruelty with virtue. You’re a kid trying to have a nice time. You’ve done nothing wrong.”

The internet is harassing a poor 18-year-old gal because she wore a traditional Chinese dress to prom. Keziah Daum is accused of committing the heinous crime of cultural appropriation (which only exists in the minds of those without intellectual or cultural depth of any kind).

 

 

 

Anyway, the internet’s best and brightest feverishly pounded away on their keyboards informing her that her thrift store prom purchase was heresy to the progressive gospel.

 

To her credit, she told them all to pound sand:

 

Do any of these people remember the 90s? Because these exact same dresses were all the ragenot more than 20ish years ago during the late 90s and early 00s. Hell, I wore a navy blue Chinese dress to a school dance and through college, my favorite shoes were the fabulously comfortable cotton Chinese baby doll shoes. Also popular? Propaganda as History

 

The state of Illinois just passed the largest tax increase in its history and is still bankrupt. Murderers run rampant in Chicago. The middle class is fleeing the state in droves. Businesses, too.

 

You would think a state with all these serious problems wouldn’t have time for anything as idiotic as passing a law mandating schools teach “LGBTQDQ History.” You would be wrong.

 

I find myself wondering, the LGBTQDQ History curricula mandated in California, Illinois, and other places… does it teach kids the truth? Or does it teach a politically correct mythology?

 

Are they taught that the Stonewall Riot erupted when police involved in a legitimate law enforcement exercise (closing down a mafia-run bar that was selling liquor without a license) were attacked by a mob? Or are they taught the version that the evil police were harassing gay people and gay people pushed back?

 

Are they taught that Harvey Milk was a sleazy pederast who preyed on teenage runaways and was a vocal supporter of the Revered Jim “Kool-Aid Cult” Jones? Or are they taught that he was a courage gay political pioneered murdered by a bigot?

 

Are they taught that AIDS was spread by promiscuous irresponsible sex? Or are they taught that AIDS was caused by President Reagan not saying the word ‘AIDS?’

 

Does it teach the truth that Matthew Shepard was a drug user who got murdered by his dealer for reasons only tangentially related to his sexuality? Or are they taught that he was a victim of hate and bigotry from intolerant conservatives?

 

Are they learning history or propaganda, is the question. We know they won’t be learning math, science, and literacy, that’s for true.

I mention this because, earlier this week, a young lady named Keziah Daumtweeted a picture of herself in a Chinese-style prom dress. In the picture, Keziah was standing with her date. She looked absolutely adorable in the pretty dress and her date was obviously wondering how he got so lucky. It was a photo to inspire a smile in anyone who feels pleasure at the sight of youth, beauty, life, love, joy or the harmless delights of just being human.

 

So, you guessed it, leftists were triggered. "My culture is not your prom dress," tweeted one presumably Asian knucklehead. And plenty of other angry little trolls joined in.

 

But actually, they were all wrong, every one of them. Because you know what? Your culture is her prom dress. It's also my underpants.

 

In fact, I have the entire history of the Ming dynasty embroidered on the seat of my jockeys. Occasionally I even dig around back there and use the Prince of Yan to scratch an itch. The sometimes-tragic and occasionally triumphant journey of black Americans adorns the pouch up front. Mexicans get the left leg, the Irish the right, and various mixed races are spread across the elastic waist because, you know, they're flexible.

 

Now none of this is to insult any of these peoples. It's to insult leftists. Or more precisely, it's to tell leftists they can pound sand, every one of them. No matter where you're from, no matter what you look like, your culture is not your culture. Your culture is just there and I can appropriate it any time I want for any reason I see fit. Know why? I'm a free American man, I don't care what you think and I can do whatever I like. And I like scratching my butt itches with the Prince of Yan.

 

Cultural appropriation is not a glitch of American life. It's a feature. It's part of what makes the country great. We take your culture, we get rid of the oppression, the mass murder, the slavery, the intransigent poverty and the endless internecine wars. We keep the pasta and the funny hats, and occasionally we dress up as you on Halloween. It's a good deal for everyone.

 

People who get angry about pretty girls wearing pretty dresses have lost the plot of life. Same with people who get angry about comedians making jokes, silly characters in television cartoons and rap stars who disagree with their politics. These are not bad things. They are good things. They are what real diversity looks like: people of different colors from different places living together as one nation, disagreeing with one another, making fun of each other, stealing fashion ideas from one another, eating each other's food, marrying each other and celebrating that out of many lesser cultures we are making one new culture, free and prosperous, powerful and great.

 

Does that bother you? Guess what: you're an idiot. Are you giving a young lady a hard time about what dress she chooses to wear to prom? Hooray: you're a bully and a schmuck. Does everything that everybody does or say make you feel offended and angry? I'm happy to report there's a cure for that. Stop being a leftist and the world will suddenly become very beautiful indeed.

 

Why? Because we are Americans. If you live here, you are blessed. If you live in a world that includes us, you are better off than you would be otherwise. And all your cultures are belong to us.

University of Florida President Kent Fuchs acknowledged that the school had been “inappropriately aggressive” while rushing graduates across the stage Saturday, a videotaped incident that has stirred controversy online amid suggestions that the white usher was motivated by race because the students were black.
