When I met Freddy Smerlas a few weeks ago, he had a photo of himself and Kelso on the wall in his office. The topic of the helmet came up and, according to Freddy, it actually made for bigger problems than concussions. According to him, when a helmet or shoulder pad would hit the padding on the Great Gazoo helmet, instead of glancing off, it would get stuck to the padding and wrench his neck in unnatural directions.
