It's about getting the puck to the forwards with speed so they can enter the offensive zone on the fly. It's a difficult thing in the NHL because it requires puck moving defensemen and forwards with high skill level. I don't when it's going to happen, but there is a day coming when the Penguins are going to be punching themselves in the face for dumping Dan Bylsma for no good reason. It's a difficult thing in the NHL because it requires puck moving defensemen and forwards with high skill level. There are only two goalies on an NHL game roster. There are 12 forwards and 6 defensemen. Numbers alone mean there are more limited opportunities and most teams aren't going to give a spot to a young goalie who would be better off playing every night in the AHL or ECHL. Additionally, you can hide a young defensemen or forward by matching up. No such luck with a goaltender. Keep in mind that most of these guys being drafted are teenagers. They're not physically or emotionally mature, which is why most of them don't see a game in the NHL until they are 22 or 23. The grind of playing 50+ games in the NHL wears down young players pretty quick and if you struggle at all mentally the process accelerates. Projecting a goalie is probably equivalent to projecting a QB. It's just very difficult to know where an 18 year old is going to end up 5 or 6 years later.
