Hammerstick's pre-pre-season 53 Man Roster

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of discussion about who will make the 53 man roster, and I have even questioned others about my concerns related to keeping 3 QB's. After much thought, I decided to "put my money where my mouth is," and use my 5,000th post to post my final 53.

(2) QB: EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor

* Yeah, I know....Matt Cassel is starting the first pre-season game. I don't care. IMO...he is not better than EJ or TT, and the thought of him being our starting QB gives me nightmares. Simms to the PS. I know I am going to take a lot of abuse for this.

(4) RB: LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson, Karlos Williams, Boobie Dixon

* Bryce Brown fumbles too much. No shocker here to most.

(1) FB: Jerome Felton

(6) WR: Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin, Robert Woods, Marcus Easley, Chris Hogan, Marquise Goodwin

* I went back and forth between Goodwin and Thigpen about a hundred times here, and I think they keep Goodwin ultimately.

(4) TE: Charles Clay, Marquise Gray, Nick O'Leary, Chris Gragg

* Gragg, IMO, has done enough to earn that 4th spot, and I don't think they risk putting O'Leary on the PS.

(3) OT: Cordy Glenn, Seantrel Henderson, Cyrus Kouandjio

(1) OC: Eric Wood

(4) OG: Ritchie Incognito, John Miller, Kraig Urbik, Cyril Richardson

(4) DE: Mario Williams, Jerry Hughes, Jarius Wynn, Michael Buchanan

(5) DT: Marcell Dareus, Kyle Williams, Stefan Charles, Corbin Bryant, Alex Carrington

(5) LB: Nigel Bradham, Preston Brown, Ty Powell, Manny Lawson, Randell Johnson

* I wanted so badly to keep Steward here, but just couldn't fit him in. Hopefully we can stash him on the PS.

(6) CB: Stephon Gilmore, Leodis McKelvin, Ron Darby, Nickell Robey, Ron Brooks, Mario Butler

* Cockrell has looked like crap, and Mario Butler seems to be making plays all over the field.

(4) S: Aaron Williams, Duke Williams, Corey Graham, Jonathan Meeks

(1) K: Dan Carpenter

(1) K/O: Jordan Gay

* I went back and forth on keeping Gay, but given Carpenter's boo-boo, I think it's crucial to keep him.

(1) P: Colton Schmidt

(1) LS: Garrison Sanborn

Feedback welcome....I can handle it B-)

I think I disagree on Goodwin. He's had too many drops in TC to forgive his poor production last season.

I would have disagreed on Gragg, were it not for his TC performance.

I believe that we are going to carry two fullbacks-- Felton, and Connor. Weird, I know, but it wouldn't be the first time Rex has had two fullbacks on the roster, and he LOVES Connor.

Another thing that wouldn't surprise me: If they can find a trade partner for EJ, and Simms is still PS eligible (I think he is?), I could see us with two QBs-- Cassel/Taylor-- with Simms on PS (Break Glass In Case Of Emergency).

I think Cassel makes it regardless and I don't know if they will keep 3 QBs but if they do, brooks or butler get cut.

Brooks, imo. I think a lot of people believe Butler has a lot of potential/high ceiling.

I agree completely on Cassel. I believe he is as close to a lock on the position as we have.

This would be how I write it, only thing I may change is dropping brooks for Cassell. Graham could always slide to cb in a real emergency

You make a good point here, but I would consider ditching Brooks for Thigpen or Steward/Tarpley. Still not a fan of keeping Cassel.

Can't argue with much of anything, I like your logic and feel that the actual roster will be pretty darn close to what you have here.

Well done!

Thanks!!

I gave Goodwin the edge purely because he is always a home run threat. The defense HAS to respect him when he is on the field. I can't imagine them keeping Connor given that he has been injured so much.

Manhertz seems to be in play to make the roster. Gragg has been name dropped plenty in TC, though, so I don't know what to make of it.

Steward seems like a good PS candidate, along with Dez or one of those other WRs stepping up in TC. Goodwin makes the team for the deep threat. He's shown good hands in years past, not sure what's up with him in camp.

I am awaiting to see how they play some of the injuries. And as for Dareus and his suspension, one player gets to make the squad at least for week 1. Carrington gets to suit up on account of this, but I wonder if they keep him after that. Good ST player and versatile, but DL depth is just too good.

Manhertz vs Gragg was another one I had to think about. While Manhertz appears to be the superior blocker, and this will be valuable to Roman, I have heard too many good things about Gragg in camp. Who knows though.

I think they keep Carrington regardless. His versatility makes him perfect for this defense...being able to line up all over the d-line. Good special teams guy as well.

Nice job. I think only 2 QB's stay, Cassell as one, and battle still on for the other one (thinking TT just for his play option ability in short yardage). I'm sure there will be an injury, as much as I dislike preseason games, at may cause somebody to be put on PUP list. I think Guy stay as KO specialist.

I doubt EJ gets cut outright, as all of his contract is guaranteed. IIRC, however, they could save 4+ million in cap space by releasing Cassel. Anyone know the exact figures?

You guys are mistaking Manhertz the Canisius hoop player with Matthew Mulligan the blocking TE. I think Mulligan is a near lock.

Ahhhh yes. Thank you.

I have seen Mulligan on more than one 53 man roster projection. You might be right, although do you think his roster spot might come at the expense of Gragg or O'Leary?

I think it's between Gray and Gragg for the fourth spot. I think they are keeping clay who does everything well, Mulligan who blocks well, oleary who does everything pretty good and can play inline and room to grow and one of the two between Gray and Gragg who are similar - both are great athletes who are receiving threats and questionable blockers.

Funny...I've been hearing that Gray has been the 2nd best blocking TE in camp, and that O'Leary has struggled somewhat in that department. Mulligan clearly the best blocker of the lot by all accounts. I guess it depends on what you read and who you listen to.

Roman explained it pretty well in his interview yesterday.

It's my understanding that Gray has excelled in blocking in TC, which was his weak area going in.
