Gee, why all the snark? Smith did a good job as a blocker, which is why he was on the team. He wasn't a receiving threat, but his name was easier to spell than Remeersma or Metzelaars (both of which I had to guess at).

Well...

It's probably directed more at the "big contract" part than anything...

Smith does a decent job at what he's asked to do...But I'm uncertain what kind of "big contract" he can receive based on what he brings... B-)

He was awful. Overrated blocker and hothead on the field. Unsportsmanlike penalties and tons of.missed snap counts both late and early. Waste of roster space

I totally agree. I could never see why he was on the field. I went to the Bills-Cardinals game a few years ago in Glendale, AZ and Smith was on the filed for one play and he got an unsportsmanlike 15 yard penalty. But he outdid himself this past year when he was inactive but received a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty on a long Spiller TD run for running into an official as Smith ran down the sidelines...and Smith was not even in the game. He had hands of stone and was way overrated as a blocker. And he is going to get big $$$. The team that signs him should get a 4 game suspension for being under the influence.

There isn't a roster spot for a player of his talent on a contending team IMO. He was a bad TE in a bad TE group. He's an average blocking TE that is zero threat in the passing game. You should just play an extra OL. He may be a nice guy but he is not a good football player.

Has to be Jacksonville

Marrone must be related to the guy.

With all that cap space Jacksonville signs TE Lee Smith to a 5 year $25 million contract with $15 million guaranteed!

Doug Marrone is on cloud 9!

Gooooooo JAGUARS!!!

The only legitimate knock on the guy was that he took too many penalties. He's a very good blocking TE, but that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, so he sucks.

I think he was an average blocker with the reputation as a good blocker, and was an enormous liability from the TE position because he posed no threat whatsoever as a receiver, which is a very legitimate knock on him.

So true! Just dress another OT. Perhaps one they spent a second round pick on last year.

im sorry but i think he was an adequate blocker that got the title "blocking specialist" by being terribly inadequate in the passing game.

You are better off using another OL. He was THAT bad as a receiver. He could be defended by a DL in the passing game.

yup - i wouldve rather been tackle eligible 100% of the time he was on the field.

I'll admit I didn't watch all-22 video this past season, but the season before I found his blocking to be well above average. Perhaps it says more about my evaluation than anything, but it appeared to me that he was a more powerful blocker and did a better job picking up his blocking assignments than most of the TEs I watched.

Compared to Scott Chandler, Chris Gragg and all 43 members of the "Ryan Neufeld Syndrome" the Bills have employed the last 15 years, yes, he was a more powerful blocker. ;)
