Welcome!

Thank God Polian declined. Bringing in AJ Smith? Just what this organization did not need: Putting together a reunion tour of 90s favorites. I wonder what his next big idea would have been...Teddy Marchibroda as the OC...?

St. Doug's greatest gift. AJ Smith flat out ruined the Chargers.

The Chargers were 14 - 34 the three years prior to AJ Smith becoming their GM. During his time as GM of the Chargers they won the AFC West five times and had eight consecutive years without a losing record. The Chargers went 7 - 9 in 2012 which was their first losing season since Smith took over as GM in 2003. Don't let facts get in the way of your dislike for AJ Smith. What was the Bills record from 2003 to 2012?

Sure he did. He's also the chief reason those teams crashed.

AJ Smith did a really good job stacking the Chargers with talent on both sides of the ball from 2003-2006. His 2007-2009 draft classes were pretty terrible and set the organization back, although he had better draft classes in 2010-2012 but they were far from great. It wouldn't be the worst choice to have as GM. But honestly I would like to see Whaley play it out. Whaley is a young GM with a lot of new ideas and an aggressive approach. I think getting a 65 year old re-tread GM might have set the team back.

here's the thing: polian clearly isn't all that impressed with whaley if this was the plan. pegula sought polian's advice and obviously has high regard for it. it's pretty likely they discussed whaley. pegula likely decided with polian out of the picture, he had no choice but to go with whaley through the draft. it doesn't bode well for him long term, however.

It doesn't bode well for the team short term if there is the impression Whaley is on his way out. What top flight head coaching candidate is going to take a job with an organization with instability in the front office?

agreed. but do you suppose coaching candidates are not reading the news? do you not think the stories point to this conclusion or at least point to it as a strong possibility?

Maybe that's just why Pegula let it be known that the head coach would report directly to him. Still seems pretty unstable, though.

Exactly. He's not a nice guy, but he built a hell of a Chargers team.

Sure he did. He's also the chief reason those teams crashed.

Teams usually go through up and down cycles, you know (except for the Bills and Patriots).

The Chargers were 91-53 (!) from 2004-2012. And it's not like he left the cupboard bare. They had winning seasons in the two seasons after he left.

Given his evident success, why? Edited by dave mcbride
