The fact that this team has a kickoff specialist is a joke

Recommended Posts

Based on his performance on KOs last yr, Carpenter isn't a beast; I'd say he's actually below avg.

He may have been a strong kicker when he came into the league, but the skill of kicking (much like punting) has improved over the last few yrs.

And I'll also add that the ability to kick long placekicks is not the same as KOs; it's quite different.

If they cut Jordan Gay, you know that Marrone would insist on adding another mediocre player in his stead- someone like Hogan, Lee Smith, Pears, Ty Powell, Colin Brown, Doug Legursky- because those are the type of sub-par players he seems to prefer. It's better to sit Bryce Brown and Mike Williams, keep Urbik on the bench, ignore Kouandjio, and keeping plugging away with middling pretenders. I am convinced Marrone is a dullard.

The dirty little secret is that Kujo is a bust. That's why he's kept under wraps. They botched the pick, he looks like garbage, and he got outplayed by a fifth and 7th round pick. If he was a later pick, he'd be cut already. If Kujo ever sees a down, the season is over.

Gay had that pooch-like kick plus another that didn't quite make it to the goal line. I understand if Carpenter can't get the job done, then you have to have another guy. But if you are going to have a KO specialist, he should be putting every single kickoff through the end zone. It's an uncontested play where accuracy barely matters.

He is at more than 80% (according to HCDM in a presser a week or 2 ago), that means a lot. 2 out of ten no returns. I think one of those today was meant to be shorter too, for whatever reason the staff had (I might be wrong) you have to consider that he is kicking in the Ralph 1/2 the time too. It is worth a roster spot. His putting teams on the 20 is all about stats of how well teams do from the 20. I don't have a link but scoring from there but I did find this looking for it. And it has some relating figures but not what I am looking for.

In anycase there definitely is an argument in favor of it. Who knows is it possible Mike Williams has a big game yesterday but he hasn't had one yet this year really. One of the issues with the roster size game day really, I personally don't see why you have 53 player rosters and only 46 active. The NFL has some really screwed up rules.

Man. Another loss and we start complaining about everything again...

When we're 4-3 after next week, all will be right as rain.

Doubtful, all will be "right" again. This is a seriously flawed team. Not even close to playoff caliber.

but yea, they can beat other similar bottom feeding teams. Big deal.

The KO specialist has been very good this season overall and been a big part of field position. If you don't keep carpenter because he can't do that, you lose a really good kicker and we likely don't win last week. I don't have an issue with it.

The benefit of a KO specialist is likely overblown.

If you look at the average return of KO, htye are on the order of 18-24 yards. Assuming most are bing run out of the enzone (or within a few yards in front of the goal line, the difference from a touchback is a handful of yards at best.

For example, Nick Novak of SD is statistically the worst in the NFL as far as touchback percenteage (78 of his kickoffs are returned), yet the average retuen is only 20.9 yards (lower than Gay's). 70% of the kickers who had more than 10 returns had an average retuen of 25 yards or less.

Sure, the rest of the ST play affects the return yardage, but last year when our ST's "sucked", Carpenter had the same kickoff return yardage as Gay does this year, despite far fewer touchbacks. There was little consequence of Carpenter's inability to consistently kick off out of the end zone.

I would conclude that, while touchbacks are noce, they are not crucial, as average returns are only a few more yards for the opposing team's field position. Therefore, having a kickoff specialist is a waste of a roster spot.

haha. Funny.

Still, Mike Williams should have been on the field yesterday.

I'm not sure how much that would have contributed to a win, but I said in the thread about this topic, a more interesting debate would be to sit someone like Gragg or Smith for Williams. In terms of a passing attack Williams > Gragg, but I believe Gragg plays on ST.
