No, the Second Amendment Is Not Given Special Treatment

by Charles C W Cooke

FTA:

In practice, the First Amendment is as close to an “unalienable right” as has ever existed; one can do very little to lose one’s shot at enjoying it. The Second, by contrast, is heavily locked down. One can argue that that’s good — or that, in practice, it’s inevitable — and one can complain that America is far more liberal on the matter of arms than every other free country. But one cannot pretend that, culturally or legally, the Second Amendment is accorded special treatment.

Unless, that is, one doesn’t care what’s true and what’s not.

Frum Control

by Charles C W Cooke

FTA:

What point does Frum think he’s making? As Frum himself concedes, “the City of Alexandria, though, where the shooting took place, bars the open carry of assault weapons.” And yet – surprise! — the shooter did it anyway. In addition, he broke a host of city rules, and he broke the most serious law of all when he fired his weapon repeatedly at a group of human beings. I honestly cannot fathom what must go on in somebody’s mind for them to look at an incident such as this one and conclude that the state helped the perpetrator along by not passing laws he broke in a place he didn’t go

After Today’s Shooting, Rep. Mo Brooks Offers a Spectacular Answer to a Gun Control Question
By David French

Alabama’s Mo Brooks was on the scene of today’s terrible attempted massacre in Virginia. He was in immediate danger and rendered first aid to victims while the shooting was underway and helped Representative Steve Scalise after the shooting stopped.

Representative Brooks wasn’t finished. A reporter asked him a question about “the gun situation in America,”

(Has this shooting changed your mind about the "gun situation" here in America ?)

and here was his response:

"Not with respect to the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment right to bear arms is to ensure that we always have a republic. And as with any constitutional provision in the Bill of Rights, there are adverse aspects to each of those rights that we enjoy as people. And what we just saw here is one of the bad side effects of someone not exercising those rights properly.

But we’re not going to get rid of freedom of speech just because some people say some really ugly things that hurt other people’s feelings.

We’re not going to get rid of Fourth Amendment search and seizure rights because it allows some criminals to go free who should be behind bars.

These rights are there to protect Americans, and while each of them has a negative aspect to them, they are fundamental to our being the greatest nation in world history.

So no, I’m not changing my position on any of the rights we enjoy as Americans."

It’s hard to imagine a better response if he’d had days to think, reflect, and write an op-ed. The answer to an abuse of liberty isn’t to restrict liberty but rather to defend against that abuse. And that’s exactly what courageous Capitol Hill police did today. We’d like to think that we can enjoy freedom without consequence, that people will always exercise their liberties in a virtuous manner. When they inevitably don’t, we too often race to blame the liberty along with the person. That’s the wrong response.

In a few terrifying minutes, Representative Brooks risked his life to help others and then — later — had the presence of mind to defend an essential liberty passionately and eloquently. It’s hard to imagine a better example of leadership under fire. Well done.

More guns then ever yet murder rate has gone down steadily over the last 20 years. Guns aren't the problem. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What are the stats on accidents shootings?

Who's cares about being killed? Just like war, that rate will go down as medicine gets better. What about under reporting? All the people shot and injured. Those are the one's we are paying for.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2015/12/gun_deaths_map_how_many_people_have_died_or_been_injured_in_shootings_around.html

It actually would be financially bettet if they jusy die.

Mental illness is a fact of life just now? Going Postal has been part of the American lexicon for 30 years now.

Yes. When did gov't stop locking them away... Roughly when they cut funding 37 years. Privacy rights take off, etc...

It's a perfect storm between both sides of aisle. Then mix in easing up on guns the last 20.

As society goes more liberal, this is what you get. Unintended consequences.

We reap what we sow.

Quite dreaming.

Even when it comes to other stuff like 1st Amendment, free speech, or 2nd with guns there is always a check to reign in that liberty to keep peace & harmony.

Simply not black and white. We've got more liberty now than we have had in this country. And that is coming from me!

Lessons of the “baseball shooting”: Gun violence feeds on itself —

http://www.salon.com/2017/06/14/lessons-of-the-baseball-shooting-gun-violence-feeds-on-itself-and-even-now-republicans-wont-listen/

From Salon:

The left-wing views of the alleged shooter might be surprising to some, but they shouldn’t be. The gun industry and the National Rifle Association market guns with promises
that owning guns will make a customer feel manly and powerful
, and that fantasy has a power that can transcend political boundaries. And no one knows better than gun industry leaders how feelings of political frustration caused by seeing your preferred candidate lose an election can be channeled into a pitch to buy more guns.

 ........they are clueless

Disarm yourselves, Republicans. It's what the shooter would have wanted and shouldn't we honor that? https://twitter.com/salon/status/875666792777220096

Liberals can't explain how despite being more guns than ever the murder rate has gone down over the last few decades. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Link?

Chicago is making all kinds of headlines. The City shares a border with a state that takes the exact opposite approach than Chicago with regard to firearms. Laws? Everybody breaks them... :-(

Laws are useless when different jurisdictions share close borders. Alcohol, firearms, fireworks... Make all the laws you want, but when it comes to the "fun stuff", the laws will just be broken... As I watch fireworks go off in back of my house (illegal in Illinois, but not 5 miles away in Indiana). What do you think people with guns do? Want to buy booze on Sunday in Indiana? Get the Jack here @ Illinois gas station, return to get the firearm or fireworks.
