What Are They Doing with Nickell Robey?!!

Recommended Posts

I would take Robey over Brooks 10 out of 10 times. Past performance is the greatest indicator of future performance. Robey is limited, but, excels in what he can do. Brooks has proven over and over again to not be able to compete in this league AND not be able to stay healthy. Add that to he is from previous regime. Robey, 10 out of 10! Hands down!

I don't disagree with you. I THINK we are on the same page?

We're good , brother !

To be fair...there is a reason they drafted Cockrell, in what, the 4th round? He is a big CB and I wouldn't be surprised to see him as the #3 CB by the end of the year. I like Robey, but this team is clearly trying to get bigger and stronger...which is fine by me.

(Didn't they try Ron Brooks at free safety last year or the year before?)

Robey is somewhat a slot specialist. I can't recall a slot CB having anything like the impact he had with similar regularity. As many have mentioned though, he is not suited to be matched up outside. This means that if Gilmore or McKelvin get injured we will need somebody to be able to competently fill in for them(thus the Cockrell drafting).

I can see us being relatively unconventional with our CBs. Robey will be the #1 CB for the slot position, but won't be the #3 CB.

Robey isn't a shut-down corner. No one is expecting him to be. Mismatching against Tony G. isn't an issue that only happens to Robey. CB's can't cover every pass ever. Even the best ones. Robey is a versatile and athletic 3rd CB. I can't see us upgrading that position.

OK but lets be realistic here......

Robey's main assignments are going to be those quick little scatter bugs going across the middle of the field........the big long lengthy guys are outside recievers and will usually be covered by our 6' plus 200 pound plus corners

Then when you factor in the bltiz factor for Robey.......you take too much good off the field

I never disagreed with either of those points...FireChan asked a question and I helped to clarify the previous poster's remarks.

Listening to Schwartz's presser from yesterday and I don't think we need to worry about Robey. I think JS has a man crush on him, lol.

Excellent news, indeed.

Yes, that was really heartening.

More generally, I like the way Schwartz comes off in his press conferences. He's smart and will actually give fairly specific answers. For example, when asked if there is an area of the defense that they are most excited about, most coaches will just say "all of them." Schwartz actually said the secondary. He is growing on me.

Agreed -- I was fairly impressed by Schwartz's press conference, and though I remain skeptical, he is definitely growing on me. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, of course. There's no excuses for him if the D sucks this year -- way too much talent, even if Dareus gets suspended. I am very curious to see how the secondary shakes out. I don't think Corey Graham will ultimately be moved to safety, and if he doesn't, then how is playing time split among him and Robey as slot CBs? The trends lately have been away from 4-WR sets and more toward splitting out athletic TEs to act as a 3rd or 4th WR. Defenses have responded by moving somewhat away from true nickel or dime defenses, and more toward "big nickel" (3 S, 2 CB) or dime defenses with extra safeties or hybrid players instead of CBs.

The characteristic about Robey that gets mentioned over and over is that he rarely if ever makes the same mistake twice. For those who are all set to jettison him (and what's up with that?), let me remind you that last season would have been his senior year. He's very young; my assumption is that he's only going to get better, maybe a lot better, this season.

Yes, be very worried what is happening on the field in May.

Your right. We should just wait till the seasons over before we make any judgments. Actually lets wait two years. Wouldnt want to jump the gun evaluating anything a team is doing that hasnt made the playofs in 14 years.

YOU'RE getting upset because they are rotating different players in during practice? Are you upset Glenn played a few snaps at guard?

I am a Robey fan. Big time . He was a joy to watch play last year. he just kept getting better and better. His statement made sense about the game becoming clear .

Robey and Graham , and then Cockrell and Brooks .

Thats one of the things i call ..... stacked , my friends.
