How many desperate people voted for Trump because of his healthcare promises ? I have health insurance but I have empathy for the working poor who earn too much to qualify for medicaid but can't afford regular insurance. With the stupidity the democrats are spouting on a daily basis turning off most of their base, it's possible (albeit unlikely) the Republicans will in 2018. I wonder who they will find to blame then. About the same number of desperate people who voted for Hillary because she promised to provide free college to anyone earning less than $125K/year. Obamacare didn't get Trump elected. Congress, sure, but Trump? Pick another broken promise. Trump got elected because after eight years of being a called a slovenly, lazy, stupid, Islamophobic racist after twice electing a black man as POTUS, middle America had no appetite to spend the next four being told they also hate women. People who studied and work hard for a living refuse to apologize for their accomplishments, calling them racists and despicable is killing the Dems. Mainly, you can't be denied for having preexisting conditions. If you're a healthy 20 or 30 something and you don't want to purchase insurance you don't have to pay a fine now. Just be ready to go bankrupt if life throws you a medical curve ball. The cuts on Medicaid are pretty minor and based on the right's economic theory that they're going to get people off medicaid by giving the rich and businesses lower tax rates. The cuts in Medicaid are not minor to those many millions who are losing health insurance. Its the biggest part of the plan. It's a real big deal. That's because premiums will skyrocket for those who either have preexisting conditions or those that will develop them as younger and healthier people can buy bare bone policies. Also, if you buy a bare bone policy that doesn't cover much except primary care visits, you have to wait 6 months if life throws you a curve ball in order to purchase a plan that covers hospitalizations and other essential health benefits. All healthcare benefits are converted to wages immediately. Healthcare is purchased by all on the open market, tax credit on your 1040. High deductible bare bones plans available to singles/ couples w/ out dependents who sign a right to die waiver from treatment. Couples w/ dependents must have " full coverage" ( kind of like a financed vehicle) until dependents are age 18. This way there is no cheating, everyone pays for their own. Then there will truly be a " free market " in health insurance, and employers will be free of the burden caused by the current failed system. The system now in place is broken because of demographic change in the US. We no longer live in a family structure where one person works and the other stays home and raises the kids. Companies are now beholden mostly to shareholders, not their employees. Execs are paid hundreds or thousands of times higher salaries than employees, not 10, 30 , or 50 times more. The world has changed, and what once was a decent idea for healthcare is now one that costs too much and companies cannot or will not keep up. People have kids that they cannot afford. The health insurance requirement could ensure that they " pay to play" if they want them and not just exepect the government ( i.e. The taxpayers) to pick up their expense. Free up the market by making it truly individual, and costs should come down. Being sick or hurt can make you poor real quick That's not the point. Putting more people on Medicare by simply redifining what " poor is" doesn't solve healthcare cost issues. Just puts more on the government tit.
