I'd say this is a safe release. Hairston on PUP is a concern. OL worries me deeply this year. The deal contains $8 million guaranteed, including a $6 million signing bonus and all of Anderson's first-year salary. Another $8 million is available through incentives. I think the timing is a surprise -- why right before training camp? Nothing has happened since the last OTA ended, why not cut him then? Or why not give him a shot in training camp and see if he surprises you in practice? The Bills are under the 90-man roster limit, so it wasn't necessary to free up a spot. This is more of a puzzler than a "the Bills suck!" moment, though. I wasn't expecting anything from Anderson this year, and looks like my expectations will be met. According to Spotrac, cutting Anderson puts $1.6 million of dead money on the cap this year, with another $3.0 million next year. Not against the cap, sure, but it does save the Bills actual cash in the form of Anderson's base salary that he won't be getting. I don't personally think that this cut was primarily financially-based, but do you really think he'd have been cut if he was making the minimum salary? They cut cheap players all the time too. Donald Jones and David Nelson were pretty cheap players, and they didn't bat an eye to release them. Personally, I think if anderson was making league minimum, he probably would have been cut faster and probably about the time Jones and Nelson were cut. Again, people don't understand how these decisions are made. Nix signed Anderson to fit Wannstedt's plan for the defense. Anderson got hurt and we all found out Wannstedt still thinks he is coaching in the mid-90s. Anderson was a bust but it wasn't a horrible contract and it wasn't a ridiculous decision. I really think Carrington is going to be a key piece on this D under Pettine and they traded for Hughes because he fits what they want to do.
