i highly doubt Mumbato gets any cut of that cash for his little tribe. He might get 5lbs of the worst meat to take with him back to his hut when he's done but that's probably it. just like Chef said. I do not care about some rich bastard that goes to Africa to hunt a lion and puts himself in a position to be injured or killed. If he was, its on him. He Didnt have to take that trip.

 

FWIW, I'm basing my opinions on the fact that the company I used to be an Inside Sales Rep for, I had a boss that was a 4 ft tall rich bastard that would try and intimidate people because he was possibly the most egotistical person I've ever met. He used to go on African hunts all the time. Was absolutely hilarious to see pictures of a 4ft tall man barely visible behind the massive bodies of African animals. Him attempting to straddle them and pull their horns back. Absolutely comical. He was not a true hunter. He paid some guy to take him around to kill these animals. Suprised he didn't pay someone to shoot for him.

On a sad note a young woman was killed by a lion yesterday at a California sanctuary.

doesnt impress me if you go on hunts just for Bear. If you were hunting and a bear happened to come across you and was going to tear your face off and you "blew his brains all over your sleeping bag" then I would be in awe of your feats. Although, if you happened to somehow do something stupid to attract the bear to your area then I'd say you probably deserved what you got coming to you. It would be like me walking through the Fruit Belt in Buffalo yelling that im from a rival gang and expect not to get robbed, beat up, or shot. If you wanted an urban comparison, that's about as close to it as I can get. But I wouldn't expect you country bumpkin Alaskan mountain men to understand that. Edited March 7, 2013 by mrags

I have the same impression of these safaris that you do. Some kitty paying the locals to drive him around, find the animal, point the gun for him, and pull the trigger... just so he can get a cool pick of himself next to some large, wild animal to try and look manly.

yup. That's pretty much my exact impression. Now, I don't even hunt deer (not that I couldn't, I'm a VERY GOOD SHOT) but I understand that part of it. The deer has hunting seasons to keep the populations manageable. People also do it for food. This food could last a long time if butchered and stored properly. But the big game hunts, even ones like going out to Colorado or Canada for larger, more intriguing game are pointless to me. It's just a chance for the shooter to stroke their epeen.

I am a hunter and agree with you guys. I hunt deer, turkey and grouse. Have raised my son to respect the animal and eat whatever you harvest. There is a thriving population of deer, turkeys and grouse in our area based on this premise (you must thin out the herd and population each year to allow continued health within the species...I have literally had turkeys fly into the side of my truck and many deer are seen laying on the side of the road to support the argument that overpopulation is a real problem). We also have a shooting preserve in the area which I totally disagree with. This place has hundreds of deer (Axis deer, Red Stag, whitetail, mule deer, etc) and they are contained in a 1000 acre fenced in preserve. People pay thousands of dollars to drive around in a gator, set up and stalk a trophy deer...what a friggin joke. There is no pride in shooting an animal that is placed in front of you and has no means of escape. No sport involved whatsoever.

There's a reason the elephant population has suffered more since the ban on ivory exports - no one hunts elephants, since they can't take the trophies home, which is a couple million each year lost to conservation efforts (e.g. paying park rangers), which means there's less pressure on the poachers themselves, hence more poaching pressure on the elephants. Not only that, but the revenue hunting generates must be replaced, usually by cash crops, reducing the elephants' habitat and putting even more pressure on elephant herds (requiring them to be cropped).

 

NOT hunting in Africa actually ends up killing more game than hunting does.

Some hunting is like that (and I have little respect for hunters that hunt from the back of a Land Rover)...but judging by the video, they stalked that lion on foot for a few miles, and close enough that they took a charge from mere yards away in cover. And it was a lucky shot - a brain shot on a lion is almost impossible, as the brain sits behind thick, sloped bone.

 

That wasn't a 200 yard shot on the open savannah - the hunting in that video was dangerous. The guy being charged was lucky as hell.

i don't know if I take your Elephant story serious or not. It sounds like something anyone could make up and it's so crazy it could be fact or complete BS. It might make sense. I could see it being true, I could also see it being total crap by pro-hunters.

I am not a hunter, although I've been hunting - with my father as a young boy.

 

My father taught me to respect guns and animals. He made VERY clear to me that hunting with no real use for what you're going after is not hunting ... it's killing.

 

Personally, I can't bring myself to shoot a defenseless animal. But I am not anti-hunting, by any means.

 

My son has shown interest in hunting (one of his friends' dad is really into it), and I actually feel badly that he doesn't have a chance in hell at shooting at another living being until he's an adult. But I'm not going to let him hunt without me, and I'm not going to hunt ... so I guess it just sucks for him.

 

Hunting is necessary for population control. And I truly believe the vast majority of hunters are responisible and respectful.

We're supposed to be an "evolved" species yet our desire to prove our manhood by killing **** just because we can is proof positive that we're still cavemen. Trophy hunting is disgusting and ranks riugh up there with whaling imo.

i mostly object to hunting for no reasons other than to stroke your epeen. Especially in an animal like a lion. No other reason to hunt a lion. If you were hunting and a lion posed a threat, I'm perfectly fine with taking that shot. But to put yourself in the situation to get mauled by the lion running at you, yeah, I have no problem with that guy getting his head taken off by that lion. He put himself in that position.
