This makes zero sense, and I call shenanigans. Wannstedt is strictly a 4-3 guy.

At Coach Gailey's season ending press conference, he was quite clear that he viewed the Bills as a multiple front defensive team. I'm amazed that so many fans are hung up on what scheme the Bills are going to run and what players they're going to draft to fit into specific schemes. I'm just as amazed that so few fans know what the Bills Head Coach said about what defensive fronts they plan on employing.

I repeat: Gailey said the Bills are a multiple front team.

A guy with the experience of DW is not coming to Buffalo to be a linebackers coach.

I agree with this take. Whatever you think of Dave Pornstache, he has enough stature that I doubt he would come here to become a position coach.

I was just thinking, if we were interested in bringing in another D-coordinator, and Wanny took a job elsewhere, who else might be a really drastic upgrage, and would be out there for hire? Any of these names sound appealing/probable?

Rob Ryan/Eric Mangini (Mangini having, perhaps, the best know-how on how to beat Bellicheck, and Rob Ryan maybe better able to handle the Jets than a lot of others...),

John Fox - should he wish to become a coordinator again,

Mike Singletary?

Tom Cable... I mean, there's really no connection there, but the point is, there are guys out there who could bring credibility to our Defense, if that is what our staff would like to add, and Wannstedt isn't the only option...

but, he'd sure be a nice fit.

As we've beaten to death, Singletary was never a D-coordinator…only a linebackers coach. Tom Cable was an offensive line coach.

I do like your suggestions about Eric Mangini and Rob Ryan. I would be excited if the Bills wished to speak with either of them…as I am that they have an interest in Pornstache.

FWIW -

If early reports by ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen are accurate, former Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears coach Dave Wannstedt could be returning to the AFC East on the same staff as Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey, only this time Wannstedt will be the assistant and Gailey will be the man in charge.

From local TV reports, sounds like DW would be ass't HC running the D, similar to the role DW had in Miami under JJ, and much like Dick LeBeau's Buffalo role under Jauron. (Gailey was Wannstadt's OC in Miami.)

(BTW - if this does happen, I would look for the Bills to draft injured Pitt DE Greg Romeus in the late rounds. Romeus is a favorite of Wannstadt, and was projected as a round one pick before tearing his ACL.)

Our D line could be pretty nasty with Kelsey Fairly Williams and Edwards might even give Maybin another chance, but I don't see this happening we are truely in the transition to the 3-4

That's not what Chan says.. The new catch word is 'Hybrid'. 4-3, 3-4, 5-2 whatever the down, distance and tendencies dictate.

A serious question for you all. Even before this came up when Chan mentioned running multiple schemes I wondered whether that's a viable prospect long term or whether it was simply a way of transitioning from the 4-3 to the 3-4. So I guess my question for you guys is, is it possible to run both 3-4 and 4-3 on a permanent basis with positive results seeing as some people are 3-4 guys and some are 4-3 guys? Would this mean most of the roster would be taken up by front 7 players so we have the different ones to run the schemes that suit them best? I hope I have explained myself clear enough, apologies if not.

When drafting a player at pick 3 or using free agent dollars wouldnt it be important then to find guys who can play in both fronts, not just one or the other, to maximize their utility?

So if a guy like Bowers can only play when the team lines up 4-3 is that a wise pick?

No, its important to find a player that can play great football period. If we draft Bowers and he's a superstar, it will improve the defense no matter what "scheme" we run.

Not to mention that with all of the passing that goes on in the NFL today, you're playing a ton of different defensive looks regardless of whatever your base defense is.

I guess my point was that if he is not able to play OLB, and we run 3-4 33% of the time, then our best player that so much has been invested in is either not on the field 33% of the time or is not as effective.

In other words, does saying we are a hybrid pigeon hole players just as much as saying we are strictly a 3-4 or 4-3, because now they have to find players that fit both schemes.

Apparently you're too young to remember his days with pig faced satan in Dallas. Excellent DC (IMO).

Wasn't it pork-faced satan?

His defenses in Dallas were a huge part of the reason they went to those Superbowls. I don't know if he has a working relationship with Gailey, but I'd most certainly be ok with him as a DC. Wannstedt is an average HC, but a good DC.

RW doesn't have a reputation($$$) for allowing his head coaches to hire big name coordinators. I'd be surprised if Wannstedt ended up here.

Most of Gailey's asst. coaches were probably brought on due to a lack of large coaching budget.

Nice. So essentially it would be similar to the current set-up w/ Modkins as the OC in name only. George Edwards would retain the title of DC but it would be DW doing most of the heavy lifting. I could certainly live with this.

I think Bowers is big enough to play a little DE in the 3-4.
