Official "Keep Losman in there" thread
MDH replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I never would have guessed that you'd come here today and post questions concerning Losman. Let me guess, the Oline suddenly played much better yesterday than it had the last 4 1/2 weeks and that enabled Losman to throw the ball down field while Holcomb never had the time to do so? Nobody is anointing Losman the "next" anything. Most just want to see the kid put in so he has the opportunity to develop so that we can determine whether this kid is the future at QB or not. Holcomb, with 85% of his passes going for 10 yards or less through the air and apparently afraid to take shots downfield (or throw intermediate passes), definately isn't our future. I'd never root for a player to get hurt and I hope Holcomb is okay but I don't want to see him on the field again this year. -
I f'in hate the fade into the endzone. Unless you have a guy like Randy Moss (or a Larry Fitzgerald) that towers over smaller CBs and who also have a great vertical jump it's a play I just can't stomach. And if the Phins are going to throw it...throw it to your playmaker Chambers. Booker is a little taller than Chambers but he doesn't have anywhere near his leaping ability.

It's not a matter of knowing who he's responsible for, it's a matter of doing it enough times so that he can instantly react while it's happening. If he stops for just a moment to think he's beaten. All the film study and classroom time he puts in will only take him so far.
-
Agreed, he's not great but he's a solid 3 or 4 WR and JP looks his way quite a bit. It's fashionable to rag on Reed but he's played pretty well this year.
-
Heh, at the end of the game yesterday I caught myself saying, "come on Miami!" I stopped, looked at my wife stunned and said, "what the hell did I just say?" Hopefully that episode never repeats itself.
-
Give me a break. Sure he sucked, but you can't throw a guy out there with 4 days practice under his belt and expect him to not get confused on assignments. It was a bad coaching move to try it. It will take time to make the move, granted, time might be one thing that Williams doesn't have.
-
I'd say that's offset by the fact that the backup QB doesn't get many reps during the week. Also, It's not like Losman took off running at every opportunity today, he ran once for a first down. Most of his damage took place while he as in the pocket. Then again by "different skill set" you mean that he'll actually throw the ball more than 7 yards in the air then you are correct.

Agreed, the ball was under thrown (though not "badly"). However, what Losman does that Holcomb doesn't do is actually throw the ball downfield and give his WRs a chance to make a play. It paid off twice today. The passes don’t have to always be perfect (though Losman’s second TD was as perfect as it gets). There were lots of people who kept saying that the reason Holcomb doesn't throw the ball downfield (or even intermediate throws) is because he doesn't have time to throw. How is it that the moment Losman comes into the game there's suddenly time to throw something more than a 10 yard pass?

Home games vs. lousey AFC teams...isn't that how Holcomb put up his two wins as a starter?
-
My favorite was when he declared at the begining of the game that the Bills D was one of the "least blitzing" Ds in the league.
-
Sadly, I'm tired of most of them as well. You know it's pretty bad when you find yourself admiring other team's players more than your favorite team's. There are only a few players on the Bills that I'm happy with at this point.

Jerry Sullivan responds to my e-mail

Sadly enough being "credible" isn't the point. Would anybody be discussing his articles if he didn't take the tone he takes? Perhaps a few, but he wouldn't have nearly the name recognition he has by going way overboard...and unfortunately "name recognition" equals payday and that's the name of the game. As long as readers continuously talk about his articles the guy will always have a job and most likely get a better job at some point. The same can’t be said of other writers who do a solid job but whose articles don’t have a recognizable flavor. -
The best thing about this TO debacle....

In the midst of that smile it almost looks like TO gives a little nod and a wink to the guy that asked the question (around 15:48). -
Not even close. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing the Bills come out unprepared to play. Against Oakland they looked like a high school team and I simply can't stand sloppy play. I'd rather lose close in a hard fought game than get smacked by a weak team.
-
There's no such thing as "easily" when it comes to going 16-0 in the regular season. There's a reason that it's never been done since the league expanded to a 16 game schedule. Every year there's a new "threat" to go undefeated and every year a team gets beat. It will happen to Indy too. Everybody is high on the Colts after the Monday night hammering they laid on NE...but Indy has struggled at times this year. Week 2 at home against Jax comes to mind, a game which they trailed going into the 4th quarter 3-0. Week 3 against a pathetic Cleveland team where they escaped (at home no less) 13-6. Indy is very beatable and at some point this year they'll falter at least once.
-
How can anybody reasonably expect this Bills team to go 6-2 against the schedule we face in the second half of the season? I keep hearing that 9-7 might get it done, but I'm wondering where all these wins are going to come from? The only games I see the Bills having a realistic shot at winning the rest of the way are against KC, Miami and the Jets. I'm sure they'll lose at least one of these and pick up a win they're not "supposed" to get, but there's no way in hell this team is going to put up 9 wins.

I thought it was so obvious that I was being sarcastic that it didn't require a" /sarcasm". I guess I was wrong.

This is an excellent analogy!

I think JP gives us a good chance to win now.

The Bills did run more plays when Holcomb was in the game. However, instead of looking at how many plays total are being run, let's look at the percentage of plays that are running plays (not counting QB scrambles). When Losman was QBing the Bills handed the ball off 92 of the 225 plays. That's 40.8% of the time. When Holcomb is QBing the Bills have handed the ball off 128 of the 258 plays. That's 49.6% of the time. In fact, the Bills have run a total of 33 more plays in the four games that Holcomb has QBed. They've run the ball 36 more times in those same games. That, of course, means that the difference in the number of plays run are all running plays. When Holcomb is in the game they've called a balanced attack while when Losman was playing they threw the ball nearly 60% of the time. -
It wouldn't have mattered. With the revolving door of QBs we've had Harrison wouldn't have nearly the reputation he's built by playing with Manning for 7 years.

What you seem to be missing is that none of the comments you quoted him saying is what got him suspended.

The way I see it our Dline is in more need of fixing than the Oline. Not that the Oline couldn't use some upgrades but the Dline has just been pathetic.

I've never understood this anti TD movement
MDH replied to Mr. T's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm a patient person and I've defended TD for a long time. But at some point the guy has to show results. I don't care how many good to great individuals he's brought here (or kept here). I want to see results on the field, period. It's not a matter of being spoiled by the early 90s teams, it's the fact that we've become one of the worst 5 franchises in the NFL (in terms of winning). I was going to give TD a pass this year because of the struggles that we were bound to encounter while breaking in a young QB. I no longer give him that pass. The guy isn't a bad GM but at the same time he hasn't been getting the job done. At some point it has to be time to move on. Depending on how this season plays out I might be willing to give the guy one more year. However if this team isn't turned around after year 6 of TD then I'm all for moving in another direction. -
What do you expect the team to say. "We are embarrassed at how badly we suck and don't feel we have a chance to win many more games this year."? Of course Donahoe isn't going to say that. He's towing the party line like any GM would. I wouldn't read too much into his honest thoughts based on what he said to the media. Hell, he's even set the table for a scenario where JP can return and the team still won't publicly admit the season is over. Until the team is mathematically out of the playoffs the coaching staff and front office will keep saying the season isn't over even if they believe otherwise.

If you've read my posts you'll realize that I've said that arm strength is not that important in the NFL...in-so-long as the QB in question can make every throw that needs to be made. That means, that he can use the entire field; the sidelines and the middle, both at varying depths. Manning can make all the throws which makes your argument a moot one. As long as a QB can make all the throws the things that separate great QBs from average ones are his decision making abilities and his accuracy. Those things are much more important than arm strength. Can Holcomb make all the throws? Perhaps he can, but in four starts this year I find it odd that I haven't seen him even attempt any of the difficult throws. You're going to find that Holcomb will become less and less effective the more film that opponents have of him. He doesn't challenge the entire field which makes it much easier to defend and much more difficult in the red zone. This is one of the reasons our red zone offense has been so bad. I’ll add that if Holcomb does have the arm strength to challenge the entire field then his decision making isn’t that great. He needs to throw some of those 15-yard outs, even if they are unsuccessful, just to show the opponent that he can challenge that part of the field.
