Bills to pull out of Toronto deal per Mark Gaughan
MDH replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hah, this is how low Bills' fans expectations have fallen. Now they're just happy to have all their home games played in their home stadium. -
I keep seeing this said, "you don't pay $10M for a safety." Two points about this: One, I agree, safeties are generally the least important position on the D. However, how much do you pay for a player who is near the league leader in turnovers year in year out? Byrd does it no matter the D he's in. He has a knack for being in the right place over and over again. Turnovers are pretty much universally accepted as the most important stat in football. The one that correlates to a team winning more than just about any other. How much is a player worth who causes so many turnovers? I think this has to enter somewhere into the equation. Two, if an organization isn't willing to pay top dollar for certain positions then for the love of god stop drafting those positions early in the draft! Draft positions that you think ARE important and worth paying top dollar for. Byrd was drafted #42, that's pretty early for a spot not considered that important. The only way to hold onto players after their first contract is up is to pay them market value. If you hit on high draft picks those contracts are going to cost a team so make sure you're willing to pay that money when you draft them. Otherwise you're just running on a treadmill and getting nowhere.

Dolphins floating Dion Jordan in trade talks
MDH replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't remember who the quote was from but it was either a scout or perhaps even Whaley who said that he was researching Jordan and every time he turned on the tape to watch him his eyes were instead drawn to Kiko. People let the combine and physical numbers dazzle them instead of just watching the game tape. -
What's monotonous is the Bills 14 years of futility. There is no need to go looking for stuff to B word about, it's smacking everybody across the face. What's amazing is your constant bitching (yeah, you bitching) about the fans when they have every right to want - and expect - more from this organization. The fact that you don't is puzzling.

Case Study: 1,000 pass attempts determines a young QBs career path
MDH replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, but you're not going to have much data to work with if you stick with only the last 6 years. And by the time you do have enough data to make a meaningful analysis more rule changes will likely have occurred. I think Ramius hit the sweet spot in picking when to set the cut off. Nice work Ramius, I appreciate your work. -
I love Ebron's physical ability but I changed my mind when I saw his drop rate was roughly 12% last year. That's not nearly good enough for a pass catching TE no matter how special his physical gifts are.

The big question about Evans was never his straight line speed, it was his speed in and out of breaks and his route running. He failed to get separation quite a bit in college and got away with a lot of pushing and aggressive play to create space to catch the ball. Running a good 40 doesn't answer those questions. The guy could end up being quite good if he works hard but there are a lot of questions about him and I'm not sure I'd roll the dice on him at 9.

What does the GM do if not determine a player's value to the team? Sure he has a million other responsibilities as well, but that is the most important part of his job. Hopefully Whaley wins this battle but I don't have much hope. Hell, Whaley and Marrone have so little power they can't even fire a trainer...

That's the end goal but every story like this is a small step forward. It creates the discussion that is necessary to get to that end goal. Hell, 50 years after civil rights we still have stories of grown men in the stands calling college ball players racial slurs but it doesn't mean that progress hasn't been made.

EJ knee surgery, Tim Graham questions, draft QB?
MDH replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nobody has gone yet in this year's top 10. At this point last year all the mocks had Geno going in the top 10 so maybe we should wait till those experts actually show us what they think? -
Because then John Madden can say what "warrior" Emmitt Smith is when he comes back into the game after being listed as "doubtful" for a torn fingernail.
-
We don't have to wait until it plays out - it played out. One horrible game doesn't mean that Denver wasn't better than those teams. You're overreacting to a single game. Nobody was saying these weren't the best two teams in the NFL before the game. Hell, everybody knew they were the best two all season long - yet now, there are 6 teams in the NFC better than the Broncos? I don't think so. Now, if you're question is who will be the best teams next year I think I'll wait until the offseason is complete to try and predict anything.

Who said Defense doesn't win Championships
MDH replied to mrags's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As you said, they are a complete team. They will be in contention until the price tags of their players pushes them to make tough decisions. They won't be able to keep everybody but fortunately for them they have a good sized window and won't have to make too many of those decisions for a few years. -
The inconsistency of ref's in big games ruins the experience.
MDH replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Seattle held the Denver WRs over and over again and nothing was called. Because nothing was called they kept doing it. It's smart. I counted at least half a dozen blatant holds that weren't called. I'm not talking about ticky-tack stuff, I'm talking two hands, handful of jersey, shoving the guy 8 yards off the line holds. Would it have mattered? Who knows but it was interesting to see that stuff let go. -

Coaching is one of the keys here. The Bills have 3 young QBs with no experience. They have a D loaded with talent that should be the backbone of the team. So what do they do? Run a no huddle attack that maximizes possessions for both them and their opponent. Just idiotic. Unless your have the better offense on the field by a decent margin, running an up tempo offense makes zero sense. If the Bills did what the Hawks did - run the ball, keep the opposing team's offense off the field and allow your D to dominate they'd have a few more wins to show for it, I fully believe that. No, they wouldn't suddenly be the Seahawks but they'd have given themselves a better chance to win. It's the old saying, if I play Michael Jordan one on one to 30 I have zero chance of winning. But if I play him one on one to 1 I have a chance. Minimize possessions and the teams become more equal. Maximize them and the divide gets wider and wider. It's not rocket science -
And that 4th round pick hasn't exactly done much to prove he's worth more than that. In fact, it could be argued he's worth less than that now.

EJ knee surgery, Tim Graham questions, draft QB?
MDH replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So in one post you say that today you need a HOF type QB to win a Super Bowl and then turn around and say all Super Bowl winning QBs make the HOF by today's standards. That's some pretty circular logic. -

MDH replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I won't disagree with your basic premise, that the QB is the most important position on the field, but I will disagree that it can't be done without a HOF type QB. For one, Joe Flacco. That guy won't sniff the HOF and when it's all said and done will be considered that same type of journeyman QB. In fact, despite Rypian's reputation as a journeyman that guy (and the skins offence) had a few incredible seasons. He was one of the best QBs in the league for those years. He just couldn't sustain it. Exhibit 2, Eli Manning. He'll join Plunket as the only two time SB winners to not be in the Hall. He better turn things around quickly if he wants to change that. Those are two recent QBs who aren't all time greats. Sure, they both played very well in spurts, when their teams needed them to, which helped them win, but they aren't Peyton, Brady or Rodgers. If Seattle wins today that will be another QB who wasn't the focal point of their offence to win the big game. Sure Wilson may go on to do great things (and don't me me wrong, he's good) but he'd be in the same boat as Flacco in terms of his contributions this year...he rode a dominant D to the title. -

Have you ever been to a Dr. with a problem? They don't do sh*t unless they have to thanks to the insurance companies. I've had neck, shoulder and back issues and they won't even take an MRI until I go through 6 weeks of physical therapy first. If there is any improvement with physical therapy they won't order the MRI. With my shoulder they actually gave me the MRI and when it was discovered that I had a partially torn rotator cuff they didn't order surgery it was, "just keep doing the exercises." Years and years later I still have to do those exercises 3-4 times a week because if I don't my shoulder feels like sh*t. So yeah, guys in the NFL get different treatment than the rest of us because they have a financial backer who doesn't mind paying for all the procedures. -
Bills hire Jim Hostler as Senior Offensive Assistant
MDH replied to d_wag's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. If he'd just put an add on Craig's list announcing he's looking for coaches instead of hiring people he knows from personal experience are quality coaches the Bills would be much better off. -
Most annoying two weeks leading up to a Super Bowl ever?
MDH replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You did see that I quoted a specific post and in that specific post references were made about not staying up for the entire game and it being a "garbage of a Super Bowl." I don't know about you but I think that constitutes as "not excited for the game." The DVR is a football fans' best friend. Start the game 45 min to an hour late and skip the commercials. By the end of the game you'll have caught up to the live action so you can see the finish live. -

Wow. Just wow. This SB is one of the more interesting match-ups in years. It's easily the two best teams in the league and they have very different football teams. If you're not interested in this game I'd say you're not interested in football. Granted, I always hate the SB coverage leading up to the game but it doesn't detract from the game itself - it's just noise.
