I disagree. IMO, the Dolphins made a huge mistake staying with Tua. It makes their bold move of replacing Fitz with Tua, when Fitz was better, a mistake. I thought Miami was discarding their fluke possibility at the playoffs for the long term. The early look and decision of whether Tua was the long term answer. They got to see what they had, and somehow came to the exact opposite conclusion that I had. Miami should have gone the AZ route and reloaded at QB with a do over while they had the chance (the #3 pick). Huge blunder. And I'm enjoying every second of it.

I'm with you, pretty safe, smart, pick to me. They don't really define bust. For Rousseau he says he didn't see him being a top 30 player, that's not a bust. And Boogie seems very safe to not only make the team but be a solid rotational player in his first year. If these two become rotational players that allow the Bills to jettison Addison and Butler next year, they are producing a financial benefit to the Bills. To me the odds are strongly in their favor to do at least that.

I think salary opinion is a big issue. Pegging the market value of Ertz is no easy task. $8.5M seems reasonable to me. J Smith just got $12.5 and Pitts $8. I'm afraid if they cut Ertz the Bills won't survive the bidding war (see JJ Watt). AZ and TN have dogmeat for TEs and money to spend. Best case scenario for me is, Ertz to the Bills for a 7th and either Addison or Butler (then the Bills can go after Nelson).

I agree with you. I'd add that people are also selling Allen short if they think he can't improve (scary thought for our competition). The improvement to Allen's game in using the TE, and game management, would be greatly facilitated if he has the right weapons. Adding Ertz would be for TEs in the middle of the range between Diggs - J Brown was in the WR category.

Bring in Ertz! We all want Josh to continue his development. The next step is taking what the defense gives him. Well he needs the tools for that. Josh needs the confidence that the 5-7 yard dump off that is wide open will be caught. Daboll can use the weapon so that defenses won't cheat, as KC did, to take away the midrange game.

I find it weird that people could watch many Fin games last year and think Tua was better than Fitz. If Tua hadn’t been a 1st round pick, Fitz would have led Miami into the playoffs (would have beat either Den or the Bills backups). Tua stinks, Mac is average at best, and Zach is in a real loser situation. The Bills need to rule this division.

There are two things that make it tough for the Bills in regards to Home field. One, that they cut it down to only 1 team gets the bye. That's already hurt once. And second is KC, they're tough. And the Bills have to play them in KC. One thing going for the Bills, to me, the AFC East looks like a cake walk, especially when one looks at the QBs. The Bills swept the division last year and 2 out of the 3 (NY +Miami) have downgraded their QBs (Fitz/Darnold > Tua/Zach). And NE's QB not only stunk last year but looked to be on the decline and they picked up a mediocre QB.

New NFL-NFLPA Covid protocols
Einstein's Dog replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What a pro NFLPA piece that was. Somehow thinking by saying the "agreement was negotiated in a simple and straightforward way" implies it was a good deal. Not necessarily the case, often times complex issues aren't straightforward. The second point on about how the negotiations weren't to create two classes of players, well they failed there. The authors contention that football players are split in a way that's not different than the way the rest of the US is split is backed up by nothing. And he estimates that the football players are 25% for vaccination, 25% totally against and another 50% against it but willing to do it, to comply because of negative consequences if not done. So does the author really think 75% of the general population doesn't want the vaccine? To me, the points in that article help support Beas' contention that the NFLPA misread the players position. -
Bills working out DT Eli Ankou (update: signed)

Not so fast. Could be coverage for moving Butler in the Ertz trade. 😀 -
Seems like you may need to educate yourself on the political bias of Twitter. Not being cognizant of the leanings is a problem. Look at the owner, or the fact checking, or the blocking. It is a left leaning institution. As for Beas, I think he is obviously frustrated. I can see how he could feel the NFLPA let him down. Maybe by sounding off he can get the NFLPA to review its stance and be more player friendly

What do you expect from our 3rd year players?
Einstein's Dog replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Oliver will be kept. An advantage of the 5th year option is being able to negotiate a contract prior to the 5th year that includes guaranteed money and extended years. I think they will and should do that with Oliver. Singletary should do better. He has no option and just as well. He should not be expensive. Next year may be a year for an RB in the draft. Knox should be a TE2. He should not be expensive and I would like to see an extension with a guarantee for a reasonable contract. -
New NFL-NFLPA Covid protocols
Einstein's Dog replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, the NFL could try and make that policy. But it certainly seems reasonable that the NFLPA could have prevented it. And this seems to be the source of Beas' frustration. The NFL network is saying that 50% of the players have been vaccinated. And with the pressure on marginal players to do it, it seems the majority have been hesitant. I believe Beas' comment about "who voted for this" is implying the majority of players did not want this. From that perspective it looks like the NFLPA did a poor job on this issue. -
New NFL-NFLPA Covid protocols

The consequences for the choice to not get vaccinated were negotiated. Beas is complaining about the terrible job (in Beas opinion) that the NFLPA did with that negotiation. That is not an unreasonable position. As for your every workplace comment, most workplaces have nowhere near the types of restrictions the NFL is placing on the unvaccinated. -
Agree with you, the context helps make sense of this move. Still ridiculous but great to see it play out in Miami. I do disagree with your last line though, I hope he sits out- just more disarray and it makes the team worse. Josh should have a field day (again).

You won't be happy if we get Ertz, because I can guarantee he will be brought in above your $1 valuation. We do agree though, the FMV for Ertz is complicated. Elite players coming off an injury filled season are difficult to price. As for Butler, things changed. We drafted 2 DL. If the Bills think like I do, they may feel Butler and his contract are no longer a good fit here. But Philly has little use for him, they look to be in a rebuild. So to entice them, and to help muddy up the trade so that Roseman can look better, Philly might do it with a little push. I would love seeing the Bills reallocate some funds out of the old DL - into TE and CB.
-
No, you cannot assume the Eagles want more than the Bills offer. It's at least as likely IMO, that Ertz' contract is the roadblock. I would think/hope any trade the Bills have with Philly would be contingent on having a signed contract with Ertz. The Bills need to have a contract that is close to Fair Market Value (FMV) for Ertz because everyone knows if Philly can't move him, they'll cut him. But what is FMV for Ertz? Kittle/Kelce are at $14-15M, J Smith/Henry $12.5, Hooper $10, Pitts 8.5. And how long of a contract do the Bills/Ertz want? This is a difficult contract. The Bills/Philly could have a deal in place, say a 5th (or maybe Butler and a 4th), contingent upon the Bills signing Ertz to a contract. So, no, I'm not assuming that the Philly offer is the hold up, and I'm also not going to assume that Eagles are not waiting on the Bills.
-
I think you're right, they need to give Roseman something. And yes, the contract for Ertz has got to be difficult- which you would want done before trading for him. Ertz' fair market value is hard to gauge because of the poor year and injuries he just had. My hope is that the Bills have told Nelson to hold off signing until Ertz is moved. And the Bills are trying to package one of our DL who aren't at camp (preferably Butler) in for Ertz. Butler and a 5th for Ertz would allow Roseman to save face and would free up the funds for the Bills to make a run for both Ertz and Nelson.
-
I did not see Ertz's pouty face. He seemed like a guy having a rough season playing through hard times, injuries, and a dysfunctional, changing team. Saying you wouldn't sign Ertz for $1 is, let me think of another word instead of irrational, how about unusual. That's pretty much why I didn't ask in the first place. And yes, part of the allure of Ertz is the shiny object component of incredible past performance in an area of need to the Bills.
-
The Pats are only one piece of setting the market though. It's expensive. The rookie K Pitts is getting $8.5M, Hooper $10M, J Smith $12.5. Seems like the $8.5 contract for Ertz is a deal and could be used as foundation for a 2 yr deal. I hope Beane is being flexible on this. If you want Josh to take the next step - being able to take what the defense gives you - equip him with a smart, experienced, reliable, underneath target.

For someone who disregards all evidence of the Bills interest in Ertz, it's ironic that you're so quick to buy into the theory that Ertz has a bad attitude. What sources do you have for that? Much like with JJ, this is not interest related, but price related. Sounds like you wouldn't be on board for Beane to go north of $13M for Ertz. Normally I'd ask what you would be willing to pay, but you don't seem rational on the subject. And don't kid yourself, getting an upper tier TE, Ertz, is the biggest upgrade the Bills could do for the Offense (over RB, over JJones, biggest).
