Some thoughts on Bills start this season
thenorthremembers replied to freddyjj's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting. I havent paid much attention to the starting lineups at the outset of games but you'd think Oliver would be the starting 3, Jefferson would be his backup, and Butler would be starting at 1 tech. Things that make you go hmmmm... -

What was he losing his mind about? For a little guy he sure does work up a big noise sometimes. -
Some thoughts on Bills start this season
thenorthremembers replied to freddyjj's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I dont think they play Jefferson at 1 tech? I believe he is a 3 tech and an end in sub packages. Maybe I am wrong here. Agree about the run defense, but I dont think its a lack of experience against run based offenses. Butler and Harry need to step it up, they miss Star a whole lot. The other issue is for how big Edmunds is he doesnt shed blocks well as he isnt dominantly strong, I believe he was somewhere around the 63% percentile for bench press when he came out of VT. While Milano is better in terms of strength he struggles as well due to size. When your space eaters arent keeping your linebackers clean, and your linebackers are compounding the issue due to poor gap integrity its a recipe for disaster. Hopefully they get it fixed this week. The defense is a little light in the pants, but not across the board. The guys at 3 Tech are light for the position, but they are both attackers. If the trend keeps up where our attackers arent attacking, you may see them bring in a bigger 3 Tech. You may see the Defensive Line get home a little more this week with playing a bigger slower oline. Just have to hope our offense is as dominate as theyve been and its a pass happy game. -
Bills and Nickel Defense
thenorthremembers replied to JPicc2114's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Better get used to the Nickel because it is essentially McDermott's base defense. What they dont have, and havent had since he has been here is a unique enough athlete to play the "big nickel" everyone talks about. Jeremy Chinn or Kyle Dugger would have filled that role well. Whats odd to me is they know they have to run nickel, most teams have to because it's incredibly unusual for modern teams to run an offense with just two wideouts, but still our depth at both cornerback and safety is bad, and its not like its been good since McBeane has been here. I guess they know that the name of the game is scoring points not playing defense. -
If Joe Douglas couldnt look at the game film last year and realize his roster was devoid of talent he should have never been a GM. The talent he did have he moved. He then left his third year quarterback, who needed to take a giant leap forward this year mind you, and surrounded him with a steaming pile of monkey dung at both offensive line and wideout. Dont even get me started at what they have at cornerback and edge rusher right now. The Jets are in a situation right now that will take them years to get out of if they don't end up with Trevor Lawrence. And even if they do end up with Lawrence, who is uniquely gifted like our current QB, they will waste him as well if they dont surround him with good players, solid veterans, not just rookies they hope end up good like Denzel Mims. Or complete waste cases like Le'Veon Bell. Maybe that was all part of his plan who knows. Maybe he was just waiting until Gase got fired and Darnold was out of town behind him....Hopefully they win enough games to be out of the Lawrence sweepstakes.

Week 3 Power Rankings
thenorthremembers replied to thenorthremembers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It was Trent's second year they started 4-0 and Trent was on a lot of ESPN shows, but if I recall he wasnt really in the MVP conversation. He had 930 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 ints through 4 games. Would have been something like 3,720 yards 16 TDS and 8 Ints for a full season. Feel like its a much different situation this time around. -
Jerry Hughes mic’d up vs Rams
thenorthremembers replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with you. But Jerry has been a dog for this team for a long time, and there is something to be said for having him still on the team to show guys like Epenesa how to do things right. I never thought I'd be able to say that about Hughes, but he has matured a ton and is obviously a good leader on the team. -
1 - Milano/Edmunds - Like most of the things I'm going to talk about, this is a story of two halves. Milano showed us exactly what this defense missed against the Dolphins in the prior week. He was playing fast, sideline to sideline in coverage (blew up a screen play perfectly), and also did a great job picking an open lane for an early sack; which led to a longer miss field goal. My notes to myself were literally "find a way to pay this man." Edmunds played about 5 yards off the LOS and also showed good closing speed and hesitation to feel out the run/pass. Both of them were in on most tackles and you could feel the defense elevate it's game with them on the field. Then the second half kicked in...and I don't know if it was adjustments (more on this later), their injuries flaring up, or conditioning due to missing a week, but these guys (Edmunds more so) just looked gassed. I was surprised how out of breath both of them looked just halfway through the 3rd quarter. And as the Rams kept running the ball, Edmunds kept creeping up closer and closer to that line, to the points where he was useless if he lined up in the wrong slot. How Edmunds ended up covering Woods on one of his big gains makes no sense to me. The collapse was complete when Edmunds got absolutely bowled over on the goal line for a touchdown, not long after missing a tackle on Woods' first TD. I have said it over and over again with a ton of flack from board members, Milano is the better linebacker. Edmunds is a physical freak who lacks instincts to play Inside Linebacker in the NFL. I would rather they pay Milano over Edmunds, one is an impact player and the other is a 1st round pick the Bills keep telling us is great, he isnt. I dont care if he 22 or 32, he is being played out of position. He isnt a middle linebacker, and is probably better suited outside or as an edge rusher in a 3-4. 3 - Beasley - If Davis was the MVP of the first half, Beasley was the MVP of the second. It's been easy to forget about Beasley in the first few weeks with Josh, Diggs, and Smoke just running circles around everyone. But when it mattered most on a crucial 3rd and long, Beasley came up clutch finding a spot in the open zone and just getting his body past the down marker. Beasley quietly had a 100 yard game and really reminded us how he's the bailout option for Allen as everything comes crashing down around him. Just a clutch game from a guy who has accepted his role as the number 3 and watches the rookie slowly eat away at his snap count. Good on you Beasley, you are still very appreciated and part of this offense. His catch ratio is 75% right now, just incredible. The narrative about him is he wont be targeted alot because he is third in line, but he is on pace for 80 receptions and 1206 yards, he is a 3rd wideout in name only. Love how he goes about his business, dont care if my wife thinks his hair is stupid. 6 - Secondary - I'm really not sure how to evaluate the secondary in this game and am waiting on the All-22 review to validate some of my suspicions. But, in watching a lot of the replays, I'm not convinced this unit was put in the best position to win. To start with the positives, Johnson had a strong showing in his first game back with some solid open field tackles while Wallace got himself an Int. However, in the second half and against a team that you know can't be held down offensively for long, Woods and Cupp began to eat. Yes, the run game for the Rams was strong enough that made their play action that much more efficient (also more on this later). However, on multiple 3rd and long plays for the Rams, I saw the Bills line up in the exact same zone formation defense that made absolutely zero sense to me. Tre would be on the weak side, pressed at the line, where none of the receivers were lined up. Wallace would be on the other side showing a large cushion. In each of these plays, the Rams would run some kind of slow crossing route that lost the coverage in the middle of the field, leaving them fairly wide open for big gains. On the last TD, which looked like White got beat, watch it again and see that Tre was actually the only player to recognize the play and try to adapt to it. But with that.... This is the only point of disagreement I have with you. I thought Johnson looked lost, at times especially on misdirection. I am pretty sure he was benched at one point in this game. Misc Thoughts: -Is Poyer the MVP of the defense so far? Yes, he is. Best player on the defense by far right now. Being all over the field has made up for a lot of other player's mistakes. He has been a great player for us.

MNF: Chiefs at Ravens, 8:20 on ESPN
thenorthremembers replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Polian wasnt way off. If you watched Lamar at Louisville you knew he likes to throw the seams and run. He cant throw the sideline without tons of seperation from his wideouts which is exactly why the Ravens went out and got Hollywood Brown. The Ravens drafted an incredible athlete who can put some air under deep throws. He really isnt a quarterback in the traditional sense, you cant tell me he is out there reading defenses. The Ravens want to beat you in a track meet not a football game. The problem with Polian is who he said it about. It virtually ruined his broadcadt career. -

Going Chiefs cant stand the Ravens. Mark Ingram is one of the more annoying players in the league -
How Well Is D Williams Playing?

Hes been very good. Light years different than watching Ford there last year. -
The safeties are both nearing the NFL edge, it happens. Poyer is the better player right now, but Hyde has also been banged up this year. They will need a youth movement at the position soon, but for now they are still one of the better pairs in the league.

Cody Ford at LG; Quinton Spain benched

I am far from a Spain fan, but this is dead on. Winters was not very good yesterday. He did however have a tough draw.
