The Myth of the Bills over-focusing on defense in the Draft and FA
Doc Brown replied to folz's topic in The Stadium Wall
Plus there was all this talk of the offenses switching to a more run heavy approach last year which never really materialized like I thought it would. Maybe they underestimated Taron Johnson. -
The Myth of the Bills over-focusing on defense in the Draft and FA
Doc Brown replied to folz's topic in The Stadium Wall
You take him in the fifth round (where he should’ve gone) or lower if you’re thinking backup/special teams guy on a cost controlled rookie deal. They pry thought he could eventually replace Milano after 2023 and would be the primary extra lb in the few times they go away from their base defense in the meantime. Whiff of an evaluation and maybe a little bit of hubris went into that pick. Who knows though. Maybe he’ll shock us and take a gigantic leap over the next couple years. -
Or Beane may have tried to lock him up last off-season but Edmunds wanted to bet on himself. I wouldn't be surprised if Beane gave into Edmunds demands (around 18 million a season) as I still think we as fans have a lower opinion of him than McBeane.

Nah. Why kill the suspense as we anxiously wait for the commercials to be over? It's the same reason why they still use the chains to measure for a first down.

Von Miller's injury, and pass rush needs this offseason
Doc Brown replied to Yantha's topic in The Stadium Wall
Just get healthy. Rousseau, D. Jones, Oliver, and Miller would be a headache for opposing offenses. -
I have no recollection of a poor special teams unit biting us at the worst possible time in our history.

Okay. Disregard the Vikings game. In the three games that Edmunds missed Pickett in his first start threw for 327 yards (0 TD's, 1 INT), Brissett had his best game of the year (324 yards, 3 TD's, O INT's), and Goff threw for 240 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Causation doesn't equal correlation but I consider three games a trend. Luckily, their defenses sucked so were able to outscore them. Our pass defense was 27th in EPA without him on the field and 4th with him on the field. PFF graded him as the top linebacker in pass coverage at 90.0 and overall he went from a 48.5 in 2021 to a 81.2 in 2022. His missed tackle rate was only 6.5%. He was the player McBeane envisioned when drafting him this year and turns 25 in May. This guy's going to be a hot commodity in a pass happy league and if we can't afford him a tag and trade should be on the table.

The whole team sleep walked against the Bungles including our coaching staff. He was crucial in the WC game though. He was also a major reason we were able to get the 2nd seed. I think he’s worth the investment given his age, freakish build, length, range, time in the system, and the major jump we were all waiting for this past season. Get what you can for Oliver and let Poyer walk. Focus the rest on rebuilding that o-line.

He only got his shot because Bernard was such a liability. The Basham and Bernard picks were his two most head scratching picks in the last four drafts imo. Most on the board agreed they were at the time so it's not even hindsight.
-
Bernard was really bad but it was a linebacker by committee approach they used in the three and a half games they missed (Bernard against the Steelers, Dodson against the Browns/2nd half against the Vikings, Klein against the Lions). The drop off was noticeable in pass coverage with all of those guys. It's obviously up to Beane to upgrade the position if he lets Edmunds go but we can't count on anybody on our current roster.
-
I think our pass defense was 4th best when he was on the field compared to 27th worst in terms of epa when he was off the field this season. Be careful what you wish for.
-
I was talking more about pass coverage where his size, length, range, and athleticism really makes a QB's life more difficult. We allowed pedestrian QB's (Pickett, Cousins, Goff, and Brissett) to feast off us when Edmunds wasn't out there.
-
Figures Edmunds plays by far his best year on his contract year. He's the one player that there was a notable drop off in our defense when he was out. Hindsight says we should've extended him last year. Now, he may have priced himself out to a rebuilding team with plenty of cap room. It stinks.

Matt Araiza, The Punt God, Signs With Team in Mexico
Doc Brown replied to ChevyVanMiller's topic in The Stadium Wall
Martin is a free agent. I'm not sure what his asking price is but Araiza could be an interesting plan B if Beane thinks he's not worth the investment. They proved that? -
It'll be interesting to see if they outlaw pushing a ball carrier forward this off-season. It hurts the enjoyment of the game so they pry will.

Sean is not a bad coach, just a bad fit for this team and era
Doc Brown replied to Billsflyer12's topic in The Stadium Wall
Who would you have brought in that were former offensive coordinators out of curiosity? Matt Nagy? Pat Shurmur? Bill O'Brien? I don't remember there being a lot of great options. Dorsey was the right hire and he'll prove it next year. I'll die on that hill too. -
Daboll/Hodgins - Does their success bother you?
Doc Brown replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yeah I'm jealous of Daboll's success. Making the divisional round with the second ranked offense and defense with the sixth toughest schedule in the NFL while overcoming big time injuries to key players on defense is just an incredible job. -
Take away the 81 yard collapse and he only had 13 carries for 38 yards. He's not worth 14 million.
-
The last three coordinators turned coaches who won it their first season were Sean McVay, Matt Nagy, and Kevin Stefanski. McVay was able to maintain it by spending like a teenager with a credit card. Nagy was a massive failure after his first year. Stefanski has struggled since winning it. The true test with Daboll is whether he'll be able to win year in and year out like McDerdott, Reid, Harbaugh, Tomlin, etc... have.

Commanders may not pick up Chase Young’s 5th year option
Doc Brown replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall
Guy looked like a home run pick until he tore his ACL. There'd be a lot of interest in him for a trade given how starved teams are for pass rushers. The Bills would have to absorb his 11 million dollar cap hit though so they pry won't be players. -
Bills wouldn't cut him. LOL. Not a great look. He'd be a reliable backup at worst. I have a hunch he plays next season.
-
Beane should just let me make his second round picks for him. Ford, Epenesa, and Basham - yikes. I would've taken AJ Brown, Dobbins, and Humphrey for what it's worth. Ignore my post history and just take my word for it.

Panthers defense was pretty aggressive in the few games I saw. Maybe it’s a positive hire.
