Rudy Giuliani is a disgusting human being
oldmanfan replied to Motorin''s topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
He did such a great job for NYC, both cleaning up the city and especially after 9/11. To see him degrade himself like this is just sad. -

The future for both parties and realignment
oldmanfan replied to Big Blitz's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
OMG. This has been gone over time and time and time again. In March there was great concern that there was not enough PPE including masks for the front line health care workers (which in fact was true; the hospital network I work for had to ration). Fauci indicated the public should not wear masks to be sure the front line health care workers had what they needed. As scientists did more studies on how the virus spread they found it was primarily by droplets and aerosols, and that masks including cloth masks could help the wearer from emitting virus. All if which is covered in CDC publications including the one I referenced with, again, 45 references. So you have no scientific expertise but feel you can discount multiple studies because you saw something o social media site. This is precisely the problem we have as a society right now. Refusal to understand and accept facts. -
The future for both parties and realignment

The above is what is scary about this pandemic and the political situation surrounding it. The absolute refusal to accept things like data and science and facts. You have completely gone off the reservation if you are going to try and say that 45 articles showing benefits of masks are all wrong. First, I guarantee you did not read all, if any, of the 45 articles. Second, I have a 40 year career in basic and clinical research and review dozens of articles a year for different journals. While I have not reviewed all of these 45 articles, I have looked at several and they are valid. I will predict you read none of them, and can you comment on your background that allows you to interpret the now mountain of data backing mask usage as being meaningless? I’d like to know what your qualifications are that make you more of an authority than hundreds of trained epidemiologists, virologists, etc. -

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/masking-science-sars-cov2.html Article here shows 45 references, most if not all peer reviewed, showing benefits of masks. Happy reading. -
And where did you get this characterization, other than in your own mind? As an independent, here's mine: Kenney: deified because of the assassination; not a great president by any means, almost got us into WWIII because of his botching the Bay of Pigs Johnson: pioneered civil rights; war on poverty which had its good and bad points; terrible job on Vietnam Nixon: would have gotten more credit if he not been, in fact, a crook; he should have been convicted and sent to jail for what he did Ford: a good man in a bad position, should never have pardoned Nixon nor should never have said Poland was not under Soviet influence, would have been re-elected if not for those Carter: a good man who was totally unqualified for the job; a better post-presidential than presidential impact Reagan: deserves a lot of credit for ending the Cold war, deserves a lot of criticism for promoting the supply side economic theory that has never worked to this day Bush Sr: a good man, should have been re-elected; holding him accountable for raising taxes when needed was ridiculous Clinton: pretty good on some domestic policies such as scaling back welfare, his personal habits tarnish whatever legacy he has; should have been both impeached and removed for perjury Bush Jr: will always give him credit for holding the country together after 9/11, will always give him negative marks for falsifying reasons to go into Iraq, for the horrible response to Katrina, and for the economic implosion in 2008. Obama: History maker, pretty good on social policy, terrible on foreign policy - never draw a red line that you then won't cross Trump: a disaster; wanted to turn a democracy into a dictatorship; should have been impeached and removed for obstruction, violation of the emoluments clause, you name it.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
What's going on in Chicago? People are congregating closer together and not doing what they should do to help mitigate spread. What's going on in the Dakotas? same thing. One a bastion of Democrats, one a bastion of Republicans. The pandemic has nothing to do with politics. -

Right there with you. I am Independent, conservative on fiscal and law and order, more liberal on social issues. In my lifetime I've voted for more Republicans than Democrats, although I always vote for the individual. The current republican party is not Republican, it is a cult devoted to one man. Nor is the Democratic party the party of Truman, although at least they had the sense to put a more moderate guy in the White House than, say, Bernie. -

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Viral diseases typically increase in winter months as more people stay indoors. Covid fatigue is real; I see it every day. People are not wearing masks either all the time, or wearing them as they should. Distancing is not being done as effectively as it can be. Same with hand washing. They have been somewhat effective; without what's been done thus far the mortality rate would have skyrocketed over what it is now. we need a redoubling of effort and commitment for a few more months until the vaccines can be readily distributed. -
The future for both parties and realignment

I have advocated for the 537 party. What this country desperately needs is 537 individuals, one for each Congressional district, one for each Senate seat, one each for President and Vic President to step up and say enough. Those 537 would represent the center right and left, where most of the people are. They might differ on specific policies, might be more liberal in social issues and more conservative on fiscal policy for example, but they would understand that they need to come together, debate, and then come to compromise and consensus to move the country forward. They'd understand the value of term limits, and would work to actually get things done. -
My impression is the first Republican with presidential aspirations who calls out Trump and his sycophants will have the inside track to the nomination in 2024. I view Trump as MacArthur during the Korean War. He was hailed as the national hero, and was so egocentric that when he defied the Commander in Chief and Truman fired him, it was widely assumed he'd be the next President. He was hailed a joint session of Congress, even referred to as God by some sycophants. And then he went on his national tour, where it became readily apparent to even his supporters that he was a nut case. Trump is a nut case. Eventually nut cases become so unhinged that they show themselves to be unworthy of political office. Trump will fade into the night over the next year or two, and those Republicans who are rational and actually behave like a Republican will be favored. Plus Trump will likely be doing his ranting from jail, as I expect NYS and/or the Southern District to indict him for various crimes shortly after January 20.

What We Must Believe to Believe Biden Won

Here's what you have to believe to believe that Biden won: He got 306 Electoral College votes in a legal election. (Mic drop) -
The future for both parties and realignment

I’m all for some of the stuff listed towards the end of the OP. But what the Republican Party needs to embrace is actual Republican principals instead of bowing down to the man-child sitting in the White House for a few more weeks. When Republicans stand for things like fiscal conservatism again they’ll have a functional party. It’s also time to just ignore the lunatics on the fringes of both parties. The vast majority of people in this country are in the center; time for them to take charge. -
If Trump loses and refuses to leave
oldmanfan replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The vote count is accurate and is certified. Any errors are minuscule and are being found. You want something north of perfection. Andcerrors aren’t just found if someone questions. They normally are found by auditing and are then corrected. -

If Trump loses and refuses to leave
oldmanfan replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
All states do some form of auditing before certifying votes. You want the vote to be correct them complain when the procedures used to ensure that actually work. What are you looking for? What would solve whatever problem you have? -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Masks don’t work when people don’t wear them. Europe’s rates are going up because they slacked off their protections. Check Sweden -not doing so well. People don’t make the airborne virus; they spread the virus into the air, spreading that is mitigated by distancing and masking, which too many people ignore. I assume people opposing things like distancing and masks are the problem because they are more likely to contract and then spread the virus. Simple stuff. -

Because mail in ballots were counted after. And those came from more Democratic counties and cities. -

What is the difference between this election and those in the past, even closer elections in both the popular vote and the Electoral college? One person. One child really who sits in the White House spewing out nonsensical tweets about how he won an election he clearly lost. I have not asked anyone to surrender his rights - if this child wants to continue to act like a child and waste all the money that suckers (real suckers, not the ones he claimed served our country with honor) send to him more power to him. But it is time for the ascertainment function to proceed so the incoming administration can get up to speed. It is time for the Republicans to state this, as they would under opposite circumstances if it were a Democratic child throwing a tantrum. It is time for an orderly transition of government to begin so the new administration is fully ready to face the domestic and foreign challenges it will face on January 20th. If, through some bizarre upheaval of the space-time continuum and/or theft of the election, the current child maintains office, no harm will have been done by letting the process start now. -

I believe your premise is that Trump has a lot of good lawyers on his team. It would appear many have backed out, and I would seriously question any description of Giuliani as a good lawyer at this point., -

oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Those folks should be voted out. To all still continuing to question masks and Covid responses and on and on: How many more deaths will convince you? How many people dying are you OK with? How many more reports of hospitals being close to the breaking point will convince you?
