I am not convinced Brown won’t have the same lasting Covid effects as it appears Dawkins has. -

Shaw nails it as always. I posted a couple days ago that we are a soft team. And that starts on the lines. We have guys that get physically beat time after time.

Sean McDermott: A Parallel to the Business World
oldmanfan replied to saundena's topic in The Stadium Wall
There are things he can improve on like most of us. Right now the biggest problem we have is a lack of physicality on both lines; I don’t think you can coach that. We are too predictable though and that is something he needs to address with the coordinators. -
if I'm Beane and McD I do the following: 1. Call up Williams and have him and Brieda in the backfield, and sit Singletary and Moss. Williams hit holes with purpose when he had his brief look last year and we need that right now. 2. Put Douglas and Bates at some combo of LT and LG. Release Ford - send a message to the team that poor performance is no longer going to be tolerated. Scour the reserve rosters for O and D linemen that may not be the most mobile, but are strong physically, and get them in here. We are getting destroyed up front by tougher teams. 3. When playing a strong running team, put 8 guys in the box and stop the run. Take a page from the Belichick playbook and take away the other team's strengths. Our forte on D is the DBs; let them go man on man and do what you have to do to take away what every team is doing to us now. 4. Coach aggressively. Go for it more on fourth down. Sit guys who committ stupid penalties.

Serious question; what causes a team to pancake like this?

In our losses both our lines were physically dominated by the opposition. And there's not much to do about that right now. -
Week 12: Bills at Saints on Thanksgiving
oldmanfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
I am sure the Saints will do what they know now what works against the Bills. They will focus on running the ball. especially if Star and Edmunds are out again. And the odds are they will be successful, given the documented struggles our D has against that plan. Can McD and Frazier put together a more effective plan, much like they did against the Ravens in last year's playoffs? Or will they play the sets they played yesterday and allow the other team to physically dominate the POS? On offense, they will ignore the run because they know we either can't or won't run, play back in Cover 2, and put tons of pressure on Josh as they also know our O line is weak. Coaches on the other teams adjust their schemes to match our strengths and weaknesses, but our coaches seem to have trouble doing the same. The coaches need to put the players in schemes to allow them to succeed, and up front our guys on both sides of the ball have to up their intensity and their physicality. Otherwise I think we are vulnerable to another loss. -
What are your expectations for the rest of the season?
oldmanfan replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
We’ll make the playoffs but will lose to a team like the Colts who can physically dominate us. -
Quit might be a little strong. But I get your point.
-
Not if you watched them. We dominated teams physically back then. Football has always been and will always be about physically defeating the guy in front of you. And that demands being tough. Try reading. I said we all loved those SB teams. But that does not mean we ignore we lost 4 times because we got dominated.

Apologies to Big Cass of wrestling fame for borrowing his tag line. But as much as I think Beane and McD deserve credit for putting together a team that got to the AFC championship game, they have put together a team that will have trouble winning it all in my beloved home town. Correction: won’t win. Because it’s a soft team. Back in the heyday of the AFL and the 2 championships, we were tough. We had Cookie and Billy Joe and Wray Carleton, and guys up front like Billy Shaw. We exerted our will. And on D guys like Sestak and Dunaway and Jacobs and Stratton were tough. They exerted their will. They were tough. We all love our Super Bowl teams, we all love Bruce and Jimbo and Thurman. But they were soft teams. In each of the SB losses we ultimately got pounded by the other team’s offense, and our offense as electric as it was couldn’t match the defensive intensity and toughness of the opposition. I fear we’re revisiting the SB years and then some. We are way too soft. Way, way too soft. In the losses this year our O line got shoved around. They were not a physical match for the opposition, and as a result no run game and Josh got pressured all day. And our D line? Any team with a solid running game is going to beat us without Star (and I won’t comment on that as much as I’d love to). People laughed around draft time when I said I wanted them to draft a big fat tub of goo for the D line. But they didn’t, and as a result Oliver and the rest of the D line isn’t as effective. Credit to the Colts but at some point don’t the upfront guys have to summon some pride? Brandon, Sean, I implore you. Get back to our halcyon days of ‘64 and ‘65. Demand toughness. If the guys you have won’t or can’t get tough, get guys who will. Get a big RB that’s tough. Get linemen that can physically compete with the guys across from them. Tony Dungy just said it on NBC: you cannot win games in Buffalo this time of year if you cannot run the ball. Tony knows it. Lou Saban knew it, knew the value of toughness. And the guys coaching against us right now know it, and know they can beat us. Because they’re tough. And we’re soft.

11/21 Colts at Bills, Postgame Postmortem Thread
oldmanfan replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall
It’s simple. Have said it after each loss this year. The guys on their lines today were simply physically stronger than our guys. Our defensive front got shoved backward all day, and our O line gets pushed back or stood up far too often. I don’t care about teaching blocking techniques, schemes, whatever. When the guy across from you just kicks your ass because he’s stronger you’re dead. -
