  1. Happened to me on a flight from Orlando to NYC. Hit me just before take-off.
  2. Rico Brogna! Nice. But how could you forget Dykstra? And then you have to include Juan Samuel. For the old folks: Del Unser and Mac Scarce (and no, I didn't make that name up)
  3. I'm not surprised by that at all, just disappointed when I see it. In my profession I've seen tech folks put into managerial roles because that was the next step up, not because that's what they were good at or even wanted to do.
  4. You may be a sociopath, but I don't think that's a precept to basic managerial skills (just a means to an end): set expectations, ensure they are adhered to or exceeded otherwise replace. Rinse and repeat.
  5. Holy crap. I wish I could say I forgot that, but Bowa as a Met didn't even register and I had to google. Bob Boone was a decent catcher for those Phillies teams and brought us Bret and Aaron.
  6. I'm coming into this late and haven't read the responses so I may have missed additional facts. It sounds to me like mistake #1 was not starting the meeting by ensuring that anyone expected to contribute was not "present". That's on your bud 100%. Attempts could have been made to loop her in or failing that, mea culpas and a promise to follow up appropriately with the missed info she was expected to provide. As to Linda, on the face of it "some type of food poisoning incident" is way too little to decide on her professionalism. She apparently tried to let your guy know (last minute) she couldn't make it. That's a good sign. Whether the food poisoning was legit or she should have said something sooner is something your guy needs to figure out. In the end he needs to be able to trust his employees.
  7. Yup, that's the era. Only third baseman to win back to back MVP's! Greg Lusinski was another lesser known great from those teams. And who can forget: "Water covers two thirds of the earth...Garry Maddox covers the rest!"
  8. I was just telling my boys the same thing. Granted a lot of these guys are playing for their next contract, but they also haven't given up on the manager. Since I'm not a fan of Mickeys Clubhouse I'm not sure where I stand on that. But since I sense we are stuck with him for another year I guess it's a good thing. BTW, the powder blue Phillies unis bring back memories....although I thought those were road colors.
  9. Yankee fans were at their worst after their run of success around the turn of the century when their mantra was "Any season that doesn't end in a Word Series championship is a failure".
  10. I haven't changed a tire in ages. Since forever I've kept an inflator in my car. Every nail I've had only ever resulted in a slow leak. Every few years the inflator saves me, including a month ago.
  11. Best version I've heard of this:
  12. Bottom 9, two outs, Cubs hit a walk off grand slam to win 4-3. I did this a ton of times growing up except it was a 3-2 count and in the world series.
  13. Thanks for the story. That's a mic drop post IMO.
  14. Now that you mention it, I do remember the name Sean Kimmerling, but I honestly didn't remember his story. It's a testament to Sean that you brought up his memory 15 years later. VERY cool. RIP Sean. On a Reyes note, the past week me and two old friends went to a Mets game (the one where the Reds crushed us...sigh) and we were talking about who was the best Met at each position. When it came to SS I totally spaced on Reyes. I guess it was the "what have you done for me lately syndrome" (ses David Wright). I'd go with Reyes as the best Met SS over Buddy and Rey, not sure who else is in the conversation. And fwiw, DW is by far our best 3B.
  15. I'm not familiar with that song, but this was pretty good:
  16. Biggest takeaway from that article for me is the Mets may be thinking of bringing in a new GM. If they do Mickeys a goner, I was assuming Ricco and company had been groomed as the successors and they've stated they were on board with retaining Mickey and his clubhouse. Mickey gets a lot of hate as a manager. Should he get any credit for Wheelers in season turn-around? How about De Grom's lights out season when the team around him sucks? I'm not lobbying for Mickey, just pointing out that the lineup mishap and in game miscues of a first year manager may be overstated...or maybe I'm preparing myself for the inevitability that he will be manager opening day 2019
  17. Pretty sure he got his start in the NYC market which would explain his Rex hatred. I have nothing specific to point to other than I never respected his opinion from the first time I saw/heard him. Maybe it was his delivery. The NYC market thrives on sensationalism and hides behind its large market..."we're NYC, we must know more than everyone else!"
  18. I'm not a fan of Adam Schein's opinions, but in this case I hope he's right.
  19. The hell with Kelvin, its Friday night and I need more buzz!
  20. The Robinson brothers (Black Crowes). Not sure they reach the level of "fierce", but the sum of the parts is less than the whole.
  21. Maybe this was ignorant more than stupid, but in high school I over heard a conversation regarding mercy killing. The comment that caught my attention went something like this: Mercy killing? That's killing without mercy and I can't get behind that!
  22. Somehow Hot Dog and a Shake seems appropriate for this thread
  23. Carbona or Sheena release? Either way, nice choice.
  24. Last night I went to a Mets game. Noticed a guy wearing a Bills shirt in the parking lot with his two friends. Inspired by this thread I walked over. They looked a bit confused until I gave Bills shirt guy a fist bump and a "Go Bills".
