  1. Bautista has been a model citizen for the Mets. He plays hard and has gotten some clutch hits. His age shows in the outfield but the effort is there. My guess is he'll get traded in a waiver deal after the trade deadline and closer to when the rosters expand. He probably looks better on a bad Mets team than he would on a contender.
  2. On the radio pre-game Howie mentioned that it had been 17 series without a win.
  3. Red Sox just traded a 25 year old Triple-A southpaw for Nathan Eovaldi whose numbers this year look pretty similar to Wheeler's: Eovaldi/Wheeler Age: Both 28 Games started: 10/19 ERA: 4.26/4.33 WHIP: .982/1.303 IP: 57/114 Strikeouts: 53/109 Walks: 8/41 Hits: 48/108 I think you're right about Girardi. I had heard he was tough on Sanchez to begin with since they are both catchers. Strange thing about Sanchez/Boone was the two lazy plays happened in the 1st and 9th innings. They were both pretty bad, but I thought the 1st was worse. And if he WAS hurt, Boone could've pulled him after the 1st.
  4. If I was quicker on the draw I probably would've gone with something from Rage Against the Machine. But I don't think Everclear has gotten any love yet. Could've gone with Heroin Girl, but I'll break the rules and go with a song from 2000 from a 90's band: Another favorite 90's song from a genre I don't listen too very much:
  5. If it is he went out in style and boosted his trade value. I always want to hoard starting pitching, it took me a long time to give up on Harvey. Before tonight I was already against trading Wheeler based on his performance this year (Matz too). Not sure what Wheeler could bring back, but ever since we traded Beltran for Wheeler in 2011 we've been waiting for him to pitch well. Now that he's doing that is it best to cut and run? Would we be trading him at his peak or will he be the next Murphy/Turner? I certainly don't know, but I'm still in favor of rolling with Jake/Noah/Matz/Wheeler for another year.
  6. An Orca is a dolphin....and one stone cold killer.
  7. And their latest mess (GM-by-committee) was on full display this weekend: https://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/david-lennon/yankees-mets-subway-series-1.20052776 One of my favorite lines at work is "Do you know what a camel is? - It's a horse that was designed by committee." I don't have a strong opinion on the Familia trade and I hope it turns out well, but it looks like what they did attempted to serve different masters: Wilpons: not eating any of Familia's contract Minaya: adding international signing pool money Not sure who part I: adding a pitcher who is near major league ready Not sure who part II: adding a development prospect.
  8. I don't understand where you're going with that. The hitting coach mouths off to the ump and the manager should get himself tossed? Seemed like the umps were a bit trigger happy today. My assumption is the Mets were chirping a lot last night and today. Two different umps tossed guys today. I wonder if the third base ump was behind the plate last night.
  9. I know nothing of Keith Law, but using the Familia trade as fodder to compare the Wilpons to McCourt is utterly ridiculous. Nobody in the mainstream media thought Familia would bring back much of a return. Now that it didn't (assuming you believe that) MLB should take the team away from the owners? Or is his point that the Wilpons/Mets are nearing bankruptcy and that had something to do with the deal? Keith Law is the one who should be embarrassed. BTW: I agree that the Wilpons are cheap owners and a bad fit for a big market team. But how that intersects with the Familia trade is beyond me.
  10. After being held out of a save situation, looks like Jeurys may be the first to go. Rumors are it's to the A's.
  11. Probably not what you had in mind row, but this is definitely something I've never seen. Bad enough the home plate ump was asleep at the wheel, but the first base ump too? Might be more than meets the eye going on here. Umps who made the worst check-swing call in history of baseball suspended for rest of season https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/umps-who-made-the-worst-check-swing-call-in-history-of-baseball-suspended-for-rest-of-season/
  12. In all likelihood (but conceding nothing) this season is already over for the Mutts. So why is it that I've been dying to see the team play since Sunday night? Lets Go Mets!
  13. Just added Weezer to the list. Best part is it's tomorrow night.
  14. Rube Walker? I haven't heard that name in ages. Just looked it up and he was the Mets pitching coach for 14 seasons ('68 through '81). Very cool about the autograph book and your son. You must have some great ones in there.
  15. Two more that aired in the NYC market: Crazy Eddie: I couldn't find a "What's the story Jerry?" appliance store commercial but apparently when that work dried up he opened his own disco:
  16. Remember Ike's head over heels catches by the dugout?
  17. 100%. But IMO the Chicago/Yes scenarios are glorified cover bands and cover bands were being called out. In the past year there was a real cool night locally when a Billy Joel tribute band was joined on stage by Billy Joel. Billy Joel is a local and I think some of the tribute band had played with him...but nobody who bought a ticket expected an appearance from the Piano Man that night. Very cool despite the fact I have little interest in Billy Joel's music.
  18. I just came across this article about players in the futures game and how many of them understand they may be moved in the next two weeks. Interesting perspective. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24107719/futures-game-showcase-potential-manny-machado-trade-chips
  19. Kudos on the ticket pricing, hope the shows are great. But calling whatever passes for Chicago these days as the real thing doesn't fly with me.
  20. Mets finished the second half 7-7. Sad to say that's mildly encouraging after the 11-1 start and what happened in the interim. Players will be moved, no doubt. Asdrubal and Jeurys feel like they are as good as gone. I'm skeptical that DeGrom and Thor will be moved, but you just never know. Wheeler feels like the wild card. I'm probably gun-shy after Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy but Wheeler and Wilmer are the most obvious candidates for the next guys we give up on before their time.
  21. So you're ready to dump him? He's been pitching well and is probably at his peak value for trading at a great time to make a trade. But, I'm more about hoarding the young arms. Curious what folks think Wheeler could bring back in a trade.
  22. The fact that you were there to celebrate potty training puts this in the you-can't-make this-poop-up category.
  23. Great points, I pretty much agree with all of this. What worries me about the intentional walks is the next logical step. On a HR over the wall the batters and runners just return to the dugout and don't have to touch the bases. I saw that in softball and was appalled. Instant replay does add time, but pace of play is the bigger issue. The batter shouldn't have to scratch his balls in between every pitch. Limiting mound visits made a lot of sense, I think that gets really bad in the playoffs. And yes yes yes on the human element of umpiring. Having a close call go the wrong way is a part of the game that I have no issue with. Replay should only be to fix the blatant missed call..unfortunately that cat is out of the bag.
  24. Now you've hit a raw nerve for me...shorter games. If they want to shorten the games ( I am perfectly fine with 3 hours...the 4 hour playoff games not so much), keep the batters in the batters box, make the pitchers throw pitches. I hate the idea of a pitch clock and we're too sensitive a society to allow the umps to dictate the pace of play by calling a ball or strike on the player delaying the game. What really grinds my gears is the intentional walk. In this day and age the intentional walk is exceedingly rare, yet to "speed up" the game they came up with the no-pitch walk. Took away actual play but didn't shorten games in any meaningful ways.
