  1. He's played well this year. I wasn't aware of his shoot-out problems, but I haven't noticed any problem with that. After giving up the most goals in the league last year, defense has been a major emphasis and obviously Lamoriello/Trotz have had a positive impact. Lehner has been rotating with Greiss who has also played well. I think they have both been good but also benefited from the system.
  2. It's not just more demoralizing, it's more productive. I've been eviscerated by good friends for this opinion but I had a problem with Sanders dancing behind the line. He put the Lions into long down and distance way too often for me. His balance and agility were beyond compare, no doubt an all-time great talent, just not my top RB for that reason. I can't go with Jim Brown simply because I never saw him play. By all accounts he's a great choice, maybe the best. OJ is at the top of my list and Earl and Bo get honorable mentions because they were freakishly dominating but I'll go with Sweetness. A remarkable combination of everything you want in a RB. He did it all.
  3. We had Charlie Weis pegged as the Grimace back when he was walking the Giants sideline behind Parcells.
  4. Another stat from today that I just came across. DeGrom had 10 strikeouts and Scherzer had 12. First time since 1970 that opening day starters each had 10 or more strikeouts (Dave McNally and Sudden Sam McDowell). That's really surprising to me. Nearly half a century.
  5. Mets had 5 hits today...4 of them came from guys who never had a hit for the Mets before today. DeGrom picks up where he left off last year and Calloway does the smart thing and limits him to 93 pitches. And I just noticed that Lugo struck out all three batters he faced.
  6. I heard Mickey on the way home today. Alonso is starting against the righty tomorrow and will bat high in the order, probably 2nd or 3rd.
  7. Padres did the same thing with Fernando Tatis Jr. I'm not sure if any team held back a rookie to gain an extra year of control. This is pure speculation on my part, but with the collective bargaining agreement up for renegotiation in 2021 maybe the owners plan on giving up the service time loop-hole.
  8. I think that was the premise of a Beverly Hillbillies Episode and Grannies cure for the common cold.
  9. I almost never go to a doctor for a cold. I've always just rode them out. A few years ago I was turned on to Cold-Eeze (zinc?). I start taking them when I start feeling cold symptoms coming on and it seems to shortens the duration and lessens the severity.
  10. If the sport being different didn't matter you would not have brought up Scooter, which is a great comparison/talking point. Better career vs. better player is a great distinction. Gronk beats Gonzalez on both. Ernie crushes Phil on one, Phil crushes Ernie on the other.
  11. As much as I can't stand him for the Tre White BS, Gronk is arguably the greatest TE ever. But arguing that the Pats success during his career somehow makes him better (or diminishes another TEs career that wasn't a Pat) makes no sense to me.
  12. I'm not against the Gronk> Other TE's arguments, but do you think Gronk would have made one of Gonzalez's teams a playoff winner? Since when do TE's win playoff games? Kellen Winslow was a long time ago.
  13. I do, they did. In a big way. Thanks for sharing.
  14. @Gugny I'm not a fan of where this thread went or is heading. Instead of contributing to the downward spiral: Sydney Aiello was her name. Her best friend was killed in the shooting. Sydney's parents say that she was diagnosed with PTSD and committed suicide because of survivor's guilt. Absolutely heartbreaking. These shootings have so many more victims than the ones who are shot and/or killed. RIP, Sydney.
  15. Cupcakes? I hope you can come up with a healthier, allergen-free alternative.
  16. I know it will never gain traction, but I think you had the most sensible suggestion I've heard: no more slo-motion instant replay. If you can't determine a blown call at game speed it's not worth over-turning. Instead the NFL will continue to micro-manage the problem and apply a different size bandage to a different type of wound every year.
  17. Kellen Winslow II deserves a spot on the roster.
  18. Mets will be changing the address of Citi Field to 41 Seaver Way and also planning on a statue for him. https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/tom-seaver-citi-field-address-statue-1.28770602
  19. Dad from Chicago, Mom from Boston, I'm a life-long Long Islander. When I first got interested in football the Jets and Giants had no star power (Namath was on his last legs) but the Bills had OJ and played in my home state. A choice was made that I don't regret. My kids are Bills fans too. I nudged them towards it, but if they had gravitated to another team I would have been fine with it....except for Jets or Pats, either of those would have required an intervention.
  20. Playoffs please...and 14-16 games played for each. We can re-evaluate their relative worth to the cause on or before this time next year.
  21. If the Mets were in the AL East they'd need a paddle. If everything breaks right the Mets have a legit shot at taking the NL East. But at the plate we appear to be way too left-handed and after DeGrom the starting pitching has questions with regard to durability (Thor), believability (Wheeler), consistency (Matz) and sucktitude (Vargas).
  22. A few rule changes for 2019 were announced yesterday: https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-rules-changes The ones that interest me the most: Trade Deadline: The waiver trade period will be eliminated. The July 31 Trade Deadline will be the only deadline. Players may still be placed and claimed on outright waivers after July 31, but trades will no longer be permitted after that date. My opinion: I like the intent, not sure how it will play out. Active roster provisions: The roster size from Opening Day through Aug. 31 will increase from 25 to 26 (with the minimum number of active players rising from 24 to 25, and roster sizes for doubleheaders rising from 26 to 27). The 40-man active roster for September will be eliminated. From Sept. 1 through the end of the regular season, all clubs will carry 28 players. My opinion: Great move eliminating the 40-man September roster Three-batter minimum for pitchers: Rule 5.10(g) will be amended to require that starting pitchers and relief pitchers must pitch to either a minimum of three batters or to the end of a half-inning, with exceptions for incapacitating injury or illness My opinion: Hate it. Completely unnecessary, especially since they dumped the 40 man September roster
