Did we land a top 5 GM in Beane?
ProcessAccepted replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How can you be so obtuse? So Tier's list is just crazy wrong as are you. 6 wins while you make the kinds of moves that Beane made is impressive. There is a definite plan in place to restore this franchise's reputation from what it's been for almost 2 decades. If you can't see it (or don't want to see it) then so be it. I'm sure when we are winning the division and competing for a SB you'll be one of the many claiming to have been on board the whole time. My prediction, if Allen stays healthy, is we make the playoffs this year as a wildcard. Then in 2020 we are a legit contender to win the whole thing. And we won't be heading back to salary cap hell with time-bomb contracts on the books. Wow -

There's several guys on your list that I'd put down as "the grass is always greener over there" syndrome. For example the first name on your list. While John Dorsey is a very good talent scout he has never won anything as GM despite his penchant for spending now and mismanaging the salary cap. (Plus didn't we get a 3rd for Tyrod from the Browns last year). Managing the salary is a critical part of the job that frankly a lot of great scouts lack this ability when they rise up the ranks. This is one area where the Patriots excel. Howie Roseman and the Eagles got lucky with the SB win. Personally they wouldn't have won that championship without Foles coming in. They wouldn't have made the playoffs last year either. I believe Wentz (in his 3rd year) had the same 5-6 record that our rookie Josh Allen had. Lets see how the Eagles fare in 2019 before crowning John Schneider. I do agree with you about the Seahawks, Steelers & Patriots. Ozzie Newsome was the sole reason that I said current. The guy was phenomenal. I would suggest that maybe you focus a little on Buffalo and WNY and not on the green grass over there. Look as how the organization was run after Polian was fired. Look at the mismanagement of cap, roster and coaching staffs. Look at how long that went on for. Beane has come in and systematically attacked the organizational malaise. He's making trades like Tyrod for a 3rd and McCarron for a 5th. He's bringing in FA, some of which have been great additions, and moved out players like Dareus who's effort did not match their talent. Look at how different this team is from when he took over from Whaley/Ryan. The guy has made major changes to the Bills all before his 2nd draft. I'm not saying he's top 5 but he deserves to be in the conversation. -

I can see that you put your list together quickly without really thinking about it ? Beane has come in a very short period of time helped build a functioning organization. Gone are the days of all the in fighting and power struggles. He's completely revamped the roster and solved our salary cap hell. In our tear down year he was still able put together a roster that won 6 games when most pundits were saying that we were tanking the season. He traded up and got us Josh Allen when he needed to. He got us a 3rd for Tyrod and a 5th for McCarron. We've already addressed our biggest need and done a complete overhaul on OL. We've bolstered our WR corp and special teams. I can add more but I don't like long posts I haven't come out and said that he's top 5 but if there's a conversation about the top 5 GM happening then hell yeah Beane should be in that conversation. -

The Reason I feel Josh Allen Will Be Great

That is one year earlier than when I became a Bills fan. Hopefully after the draft you will see the similarities in how Beane/McDermott are building this team and how Polian/Levy did it in the late 80s. I'm seeing the same steps in how it's being done. Hang in 2 years and prepare to enjoy the ride. -
I understand what you are saying but I think the point is that we are picking 9th based on last years performance. So that would technically make us 23rd on the rankings. But then if they believe we are one of the most improved teams you would expect that we'd be higher than 23rd and not down a slot at 24th. Either way I could not care less about power rankings in early April.

Agreed. He was very young and inexperienced when he got the job, and Buddy Nix's mentorship clearly didn't prepare him. I think with time to reflect on mistakes he'll do better if he gets another shot. -

I agree that Whaley was put in different situations than Beane, but in every organization you have to learn to get along and build trust. Whaley definitely had talent, hopefully if he ever gets a GM role again in the NFL he'll avoid some of the pitfalls from his time with the Bills. -

What gets me is how you can get guys being all bombastic and then a few short months later proclaim that they always knew that player x or GM y was going to be amazing. -

I have a feeling a lot of the negative Nellys in here will be purchasing Duke Williams' jersey before the end of next season. The kid knows how to fight and get the ball. -

You left out only getting a 3rd round pick for Tyrod and just a 5th for McCarron. ? -

There is a huge difference between Whaley and Beane. There is no chitter chatter leaking about Beane and internal power struggles. Those rumors were frequently during both Marrone and Ryan's time as HC. Beane seems to be a good communicator and knows how to get buy-in. As the OP pointed out Beane has purged bad contracts and freed up a lot of cash. He also hasn't just gone and spent it all because he had it like previous GM's have done but yet we've a completely revamped OL and WR corp. If Beane isn't top 5 can someone list the Top 5 Current GMs for me then. -

Not sure why so many have the Cowboys beating us. I think they take a step backwards this year. -

The First Game of the year

We've added way to many new pieces for our team to be ready week 1. I'm hoping that we get either of the easiest teams (at least on paper), the Bengals or the Redskins. -
