I agree that Nix deserves some credit for assembling a core, but Whaley is "showing us the baby" and so ultimately, he gets the credit. This is how I look at it, I don't grumble and complain whenever I hear the the name Buddy Nix any more...I don't sing his praises, but I don't blame him for our past futility. I can't, however, credit him with what is obviously the work of Whaley. Nix had nothing to do with Whaley's work this offseason. If we make the AFC Championship game, I'd be shocked if Whaley doesn't win Exec. of the Year honors.

One quick answer...McCown from the Verizon commercials...they definitely would have been forced to run this move by Verizon's marketing department before they could pull the trigger. Otherwise, ROGUE!

I think 2-0 would be even more exciting! I agree. Just win, but it is so nice to know we aren't teetering on the edge of oblivion because we are running a youth-league offense with D-3 talent vs. NFL defenses.

Rex: It's the players' defense, not the "Rex Ryan" D
dulles replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe this is all a veiled jab at Preston Brown...Sullivan could write "Rex wants 3-4, but Preston went Rogue." I think one of the biggest concerns re: 4-3 vs. 3-4 was ol' Schwartzee hitting the road. I'm refreshed by the flexibility exhibited by this coaching staff. -
Like on McCoy's TD? I agree that the pick doesn't get called enough, but the issue is inconsistency of the refs. It is mysterious how it gets called at inopportune times.

There will soon be a drafting manual...Chapter #1 will cover: What would Jerry Jones do if his son didn't take away the keys to the Cadilac? Whatever you think he'd do...do the opposite! I was stunned when the Cowboys didn't draft Johnny Football. I was not stunned when the Browns did. There are certain events that seem to be a foregone conclusion to everyone except the people most closely involved. Who didn't question Reggie Bush's ability to be an every down back coming out of college? Who didn't question Manziel's ability to translate into an NFL QB? It just seems that some organizations have a special blindness that is only made worse by doubling down on failure. Admittedly, Reggie had a decent career, but I don't think he turned into the career bell-cow that most Saints fans dreamed of when he was picked. For some organizations, like the Saints, they can afford a luxury item. For some organizations, like the Bills when we picked Spiller, they can't! It seems like the poor franchises tend to make the mistake of thinking they need to take the risky pick or they will fall further behind. Dallas' draft discipline lately (since Jr. Jones grabbed the reins) has been much better, as evidenced by their dominant OL. I was shocked by the graphic last night which showed that the Packers only have three, yes three (3!) players on their roster which weren't "homegrown" and one of those was James Jones who had left and returned. That is stunning. That is the way to run an organization long term! Careful, patient talent development. When you break away from that, you are tempted to make risky draft decisions and reach for a dud like Manziel.

Holy crap I'm going to London for the game!
dulles replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I watch, maybe I'll hear you...of course I don't know what anyone's voice sounds like from TBD, but ya know what I mean. I've never watched one of the NFL in London games, but I can't imagine there is a great deal of educated cheering for one side or the other. I'd think that a few boisterous fans (i.e., Bills Fans!) would overwhelm the crowd microphones quite easily. -

How did NE figure out our offense so quick?
dulles replied to PortlandiaEast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Another point of contention which often comes up with NE** and used to come up with Mia when Shula was on the competition committee: no calls on holding. It was always the same thing from the announcers: Dan Deirdork or Dan Spouts would be blathering on..."Wow! Dan Marino has the faster release...No wonder he never gets sacked!" All the while, you could plainly see Bruce being held. Fast forward to 2015..."Amazing how fast Brady get's rid of the ball...he really bails out his awful line!" All the while, three street free agents are mugging Dareus and Kyle...It is amazing how good their OL coaches are at teaching interior nobodies how to hold so well without detection! -
How did NE figure out our offense so quick?

"Statistically" would include important factors like, when penalties were called. A great deal of help can be given to a team at one point in the game, only to be "evened out" later. It is also common knowledge that certain penalties are much more demoralizing than others. A five yard penalty on a key 3rd and 4 from the 50 is far more damaging than a five defensive holding penalty to start the drive. I won't say we lost because of penalties (Taylor's pocket presence and our lack of poise overall were issues), but when you are playing a game in a league which prides itself on parity, a little thing like a 5 yard penalty can play a significant role. I don't believe the penalties really started evening out until the second half. It is a common pattern with a certain team from out east - penalties go their way until the will of the other team is in doubt, then they magically even out by the end of the game. -
Who's going to be the first coach fired this year?
dulles replied to BmarvB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't put it past the Pegula's to pay Roman head coach money to keep him one more year. The selling points: HC money for OC responsibilities - offer to inherit Rex's team if he retires after a THE Super Bowl 51 Repeat! If the situation Roman is inheriting is not good, why go there? Why not wait one more year for a good situation? Think if Pettine had waited for a different situation like Atlanta or even Oakland. A lot can change in a year. Desperately diving into a head coaching job can actually be a bad way to go. You certainly want to go where a reasonable QB situation already exists. One scenario that would scare me: Indianapolis - Luck with Roman would be a tough matchup every time out. -
A reason I am optimistic about his start vs. the starts given by guys like RGIII and Vince Young is that Taylor doesn't seem to be riding a gadget offense. We have an excellent OC in Roman, but this is not the gimmicky deal that Washington used. This is a legit offense. In the case of VY, There are similarities between the teams - Ten. had a great defense to support the offense, but their offense didn't have any firepower. They legitimately ran "Ground and Pound" without the passing game we have. Tyrod has exhibited excellent decision making in 2 of 3 games. In the other, he almost overcame a terrible performance in the pocket (I blame him for most of the sacks). He had us right in it at the end.
-
He's only out 4-6 weeks. Vick and the running game will carry them. With Bal at 0-3 and Cleveland being Cleveland, they only have to keep pace with Bal.
-
Tanne looked like his uniform was from a different team by the end of the game! I'd look at the screen and go "Wait, how'd a Cleveland player get on the field!"

Week 4: Giants' Game Preparation - Inactives Announced

I wouldn't be surprised if the AFCE beats the NFCE 3-1 across the board. I think we will sweep our games and I expect NE** to do the same. That means NYets and Dols going .500. It is possible that our third or fourth place team might be in the hunt for first in the NFCE if they were to play in that division. -
Obviously Coach Tuesday forgot that there are that many teams in the league these days! I am quite certain that "in the 20s" is coach-speak for 32.

Andy Benoit film breakdown of Pats* game
dulles replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This first item did not need to happen at halftime. The entire world knew that is what we needed against Brady** The second item is encouraging. I think we can go straight man against these guys and get the coverage we need. The key is zoning up the mesh play for when our corners are trailing the crossing routes. McKelvin should help too. -
Is everyone happy Brady got to play us?
dulles replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would prefer that Brady** never play again, never collect a paycheck again, never don a gold jacket, never smile again, etc. OTH I would not enjoy an empty win on Sunday as much as I would beating Brady, no matter when that win comes. I am hopeful that the Bills will go into silent mode for the rematch and totally destroy the Smirker** on his home turf. The big mouth blustery stuff ignited a fire under the Cheaters** and we got what we deserved. -
Watkins: Tyrod Taylor must gain trust in the OL
dulles replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Clemson, the Harvard of the South. Sometimes I wonder if Rex speaks about the past in a revisionist manner. I think Rex is always selling optimism and confidence regarding today and tomorrow. I think he is willing to skew the perspective on the past a little to make the future look a little brighter. I understand why he might try to present that positive spin on everything. I just don't always take everything he says for granted. I think you both were right about the gameplan - MC the emergency bandaid, EJM the long-term bandage. I think they have been impressed by EJM and now they could get something back for MC. Circumstances change, hence choices change. There is no way they were cutting Cassell to let EJM be the backup, but since they could get picks, they pulled the trigger (or Rex is #Rogue...right along with the rest of organization!). That means the TT is our Alex Smith and the coaches think that EJM may be our Kaep! I know we didn't win Sunday, but I have to say the improvement with the QB position is astounding over last season. Coaching really matters in the NFL. -
