This season will feel a bit odd because of COVID and no fans in the stands, not the opt outs, and as long as they keep any outbreaks from happening they are still playing pro football and a Super Bowl championship will be perfectly legitimate. Nobody puts an asterisk next to Washington’s SB win over Miami and they only played a 9-game season.

Right on, Paul. Pretending that guys opting out for “family reasons” are somehow better humans than those deciding to uphold their commitments to their teams and teammates is not helpful. Guys can set up scenarios for their families to be quite safe, and since they will be getting tested regularly it significantly reduces the opportunity for an outbreak. The risk won’t be completely eliminated, obviously, but it can be minimized. If a guy just doesn’t want any risk at all he can bunker at home with his family, so be it, but I hope he doesn’t still go to the grocery store, a restaurant, Home Depot, etc., because his risk of picking up the virus there is going to be greater than in his NFL locker room.

Unless something crazy happens today (and I’m not saying it won’t), with the number of opt outs thus far this will hardly be a “half-assed” season. Right now we’re at around 60 opt outs out of roughly 2000 players, or about 3%.

Long only played significant snaps in three games last year — and one of them was the meaningless finale against the Jets. He was hardly an indispensable piece and at his salary, combined with what Beane brought in and what they already had, makes this a far less questionable move to me than many here seem to think. Those 150 or so snaps of his won’t be missed.

First of all, I'm not your buddy. Second, they signed how many additional O-lineman since the end of last season, and are signing Winters also? Did they do that because they were thrilled with Long? Third, saving money against a cap that you know is going to shrink next year is not the same thing as a "mandate from upstairs." The Bills are not the Sabres, and flaming fires that the Pegulas are meddling with a successful operation because they want to save a few bucks is the sort of irresponsible rumor-mongering that drives fans like me crazy.
