McDermott's Two Minute Defense This Year vs Past Seasons
Livinginthepast replied to Scott7975's topic in The Stadium Wall
How many times in the last 3 years have you seen that exact same play done over and over again. With McD and Frazier's defense, I would say at least 40 times. If they couldn't stop it with all of their top defensive starters like Milano, White etc on the field then what possible chance do they have with backups?? How in the hell does McD not get that? No pass rush and soft zone gets you burned every time. Blitzing against certain QBs (in 2 min offense) who can get the ball out quick also gets you burned. McD does nothing to confuse the QBs and doesnt play man coverage or order his defense to jam these receivers at the line. In 13 seconds had they held Kelsey or Hill and got a flag they would have only gained 5 yards and an automatic first down but bled the clock so that a FG wasnt possible. But of course none of these things was even planned at all or if so not executed properly! -
McDermott's Two Minute Defense This Year vs Past Seasons

Willard : They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound. Kurtz : Are my methods unsound? Willard : I don't see any method at all, sir. -
I keep wondering if this is possible with Von. Would a guy of his ego really feel that bad about not living up to the terms of his contract and realizing that he was done do the right thing and leave all that money? Its a humungous cap hit!

8th late-game defensive meltdown this season
Livinginthepast replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
McD's problem is that he doesn't make the right calls under pressure and doesn't seem to understand quick enough that what he is doing isn't likely to work or just flat out wont. But he keeps at it. The soft coverage on a team who is running hurry up never works. It happened again in the Philly game on the last drive and its happened in pretty much 4 of the losses and the 2 almost losses, It happened in the Cinci playoff game and it happened in the 13 seconds game. How does a defensive "guru" not get that in the moment? Does McD not have defensive spotter up in the booth to identify in game plays that are failing repeatedly? Can he not switch to Man in those critical situations? Anything different than the sickening prevent D that leads to a loss would be preferred! -

Cam Lewis high points the ball down to Jefferson who makes the circus catch. Lewis should have got an assist! He was like one of those rugby players that get lifted up by a team mate and then hand them the ball! He should have listened to Tom Jackson on NFL Primetime: "Knock it down!!". -
Yes this is true ! and so very Billsy!!!
-
True but in McD's soft as a baby's bum pass defense, the receiver usually doesnt get touched until he hits the ground or goes out of bounds!

Does our defensive staff even study film?
Livinginthepast replied to Wiz's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yes oddly so. Even if he nailed Hurts at the goal line and made him pay for it and he still got the TD I would be ok with it but he caresses him! -
He's not in the Norwood category yet. Norwood was a great kicker until wide right killed him. I can remember a game in the season after that SB loss vs the Raiders in LA where he missed an extra point and 3 FGs but managed to get the winner. That was not even a year later and he was done! Only kicked 62% of his FG tries and then out of football altogether.

I wish Rasul Douglas reaction on the TD run by Hurts had been slightly faster like maybe an athlete in his 20s in the NFL and not like some mall cop to a SF shop lifter! Watch his pathetic attempt to stop Hurts! -
Chance of Playoffs now, according to NYT simulator
Livinginthepast replied to Ray Stonada's topic in The Stadium Wall
yes, teams make mistakes. Bills made a few yesterday but it was the coach who consistently put them in a worse position with his decisions and lack of courage. A better coach wins them that game with a bold decision or two at the end and that wasnt McD yesterday. He literally needs to get out of his teams way at this point! -

You mean the "Bills Coach" we saw yesterday. That "team we saw yesterday is capable of winning all 5 if not hamstrung by weak coaching decisions! -
Chance of Playoffs now, according to NYT simulator
Livinginthepast replied to Ray Stonada's topic in The Stadium Wall
Although I would love to make the playoffs because anything can happen, its tempered by the reality that even if we do, we have a coach who wont be able to make a decisive move in a game that will help us but actually is far more likely to blunder and hurt us. The amount of stars that would have to align for McD and this current team to win a SB would be staggering. We would need to pretty much play perfect offense in every playoff game and score 30+ points, We would need to have luck and actually be the recipient of a freak play (for once), we would need good officiating (Huge longshot) and we would need our opponents to shoot themselves in the foot. All of this to mitigate the bad decisions that McD would make if in a high pressure close game (which he has difficulty winning post season). Its all possible but highly unlikely with our injuries and poor coaching. -
The AJ Brown OT catch was a fumble!!!!
Livinginthepast replied to Special K's topic in The Stadium Wall
Definitely not a catch. Too quick! needed another second or another step. That was one of the few calls that trainwreck crew got right. So many bad calls, phantom calls and outright missed calls. I think it could be the worst officiated game I've ever seen (and that includes penalties that were awarded to Philly as well). I also think that the NFL needs to have the eye in the sky call penalties off the ball. That dirty hit on Diggs after the TD was WWE style blind from the officials. -
Its not just that we dont have a closer on defense. 4 losses this year are on a defense that cannot get a stop when needed the most. McD consistently keeps doing the same things when they a) Dont work or have stopped working and/or b) when his defense is completely gassed. Soft zone is questionable when the game is not on the line but INSANE when you need a stop. Blitzing is very effective at some points in the game but not in others (McD has never figured out the right time this season). If your defense is gassed then maybe sub in more backups. That last drive in OT for the Eagles was brutal to watch. It was every bit as bad as the inevitable TD drives that the Pats got against the Falcons in the 2017 SB or KC in the 2018 AFC championship game. Or as bad as the KC drive against us in OT after 13 seconds. If your defense starters are exhausted then how can it be any worse to get backups in there? Why would you have any confidence in your defense's ability to get a stop for you by that stage of the game?

Missing Person's Report: Bills Edition
Livinginthepast replied to Special K's topic in The Stadium Wall
Poyer for sure is on this list. The injuries have caught up with him and he has lost any burst towards the ball that he had. Hyde for sure as well. Yesterday's ad lib TD from Hurts was proof of Hyde's inability to keep close coverage or close on a receiver in time to break up a pass or tackle. Sad because I loved both these guys ! -

This is the most crazy part of the situation. In any close game, McD not only is useless in helping the Bills win, he actually becomes a factor in helping the Bills to LOSE. His inept coaching decisions on defense and poor clock and game management are the biggest liability. Kneel down with 20 seconds left and one TO? That decision was like he wanted us to lose. I have never seen a coach like him who in the heat of the moment has a knack for making the worst decision possible. -
Elliot - Best Clutch FG Ever?
Livinginthepast replied to st pete gogolak's topic in The Stadium Wall
I've been screaming for Bills DBs to do this on passes all season and of course one of the few times they execute a knockdown on a pass perfectly, it actually works against them. Then McD helps out with a TO. -
We're Going To The Playoffs. (edit: Updated - Super Bowl)
Livinginthepast replied to Doc Brown's topic in The Stadium Wall
For a normal team in any league or sport this is entirely in the realm of possibility but not for this team! Why? because this is the cursed Buffalo Bills! Bad luck, Bad officiating, Bad coaching, freakish plays and injuries for us or against us. Any one or all of these things will derail our trip to the playoffs. Here's what I predict (which of course is the worst case scenario). We tease our playoff chances so that we are sucked back into the hope vortex only to be cruelly denied at the very end. The Bills are like Charlie Brown kicking the football and the football Gods are Lucy. Same crushing end, every year, forever. Or like another pop culture analogy, its like "Groundhog Day" at the end of every Bills season. -
Absolutely correct! The defense was scored on in almost all (except 1?) drives to finish the game. They were not stopping anybody. Go for the win!

I'm literally at the 11th hour for getting angry about this game. The last play of the game makes me wonder a question I often ask (especially this season with the Bills defense) , which is in most other sports when players are physically spent why not put in more backups? The Bills D on the last 2 drives were completely done. I realize the drop off in quality is steep from starters to 2nd stringers and bench warmers but in a game like yesterday's, wouldn't a fresh backup have been more useful than an exhausted starter? The Bills defense offered nothing to stop Philly on that drive. It looked like a done deal when Philly got the ball. And Rasul Douglas's attempt to tackle Hurts as he ran towards him near the goal line for the winning TD has to be seen to be believed. He makes the most half hearted attempt at a tackle like he is playing touch football when he could have met Hurts at the 5 yard line. Absolutely embarrassing! McD knew his defense was completely done on the last drive of the game, let alone the OT. So why in the hell did he kneel down? With 20 seconds left? He should have gone for the first down on the 4th down in OT as well because he knew his defense was done! As soon as we kicked that FG we gave up. Gutless and just plain idiotic coaching!
-
I thought about that as well. But they have the #2 defense in the league who has to make a stop there. They blew it along with McD and his bad play calls twice at the end!
-
He took another shot to the head on one of his catches which once again should have been a penalty. but uncalled of course! I didnt really see him feature too much after that. Might have been a factor or maybe not?
