Hap, agree with most of what you said as well....although, I thought one of the things folks liked about AJ was his arm strength...not elite, ala Stafford or Josh Allen, but good...like a Mariota or Tannehill....I'll look some more on that and try to get back to this by the end of the day....thanks for all of this, good stuff. Completely disagree....McD and what staff he had were running the Draft, you really think he would let Whaley choose his FAs for him too? That makes no sense....I'm tepid on Whaley, I think he certainly accomplished some nice things, mainly in Pro Personnel acquisitions, but he also had some real issues with the Draft and it's the Draft that builds a team. As for the others, Ivory is a change-of-pace, Murphy has real potential based on production and yes injuries are an issue but could it be that the injury and the PED are tied to the same thing? As in he was taking the PEDs to heal faster? I'm not excusing it, but making it sound like two separate issues may not be a fair way of characterizing the situation. As for Star, the entire Carolina team took a step back, and you don't think it's possible for a DT who liked playing for his former coach had a bit of a transition in adjusting to the new staff and scheme? Maybe he excels in only McD's Defense, but thankfully he'll be playing in that again....

I agree...Tahir Whitehead, Marshall Newhouse for RT, Brandon Coleman / Brice Butler / Terrelle Pryor for WR, and Jensen for Center....just to name a few Edit: Some more interesting guys: our own Preston Brown (for depth, not starting) and EJ Gaines DT: Bromley from Giants, Floyd of the Vikes G: J. Cooper or DJ Fluker DE: Okafor or Lynch ILB: Bowman, maybe? but I think McD wants his starting MLB from the Draft CB: Jeremy Lane or as others have said elsewhere Desir

I say we will not draft a QB round 1
BigBuff423 replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First, when you quote him you forgot to include the question, "I think it is possible - what is your take?".....in other words, the title was intended to get people talking about their various opinions...you know, what a message board is designed for? As for relax, nope I'm good......too often on this board various people think it's acceptable to just toss around insults like "troll" without being called to the carpet for what would amount to a verbal shoving match...it's juvenile and unnecessary. Additionally, I think it's interesting you searched the internet for a definition that suits your narrative and yet it contradicts the very thing you accuse mead of doing....it wasn't inflammatory, it was a question not an accusation or statement and you bold one portion of it but leave off the first portion, to take the definition out of context. The first part of that statement is "extraneous or off-topic messages in an online community WITH THE INTENT...".....it wasn't off topic at all but you talk to mead about his intent to provoke an "emotional response" that would be unrelated to Bills news, information, or opinions. Regardless, we disagree and you've revealed yourself for what you are....fine. Enjoy the day Sir. -
I like Cover 1 a great deal, Eric does some great stuff! And I completely respect his opinion but just for balance, Dan Orlovsky really likes AJ McCarron and even to admitting he didn't think he was a great QB until he started watching his video over his short NFL career. He does some nice breakdowns on Twitter with video and explanations...I have no idea if McCarron will pan out to anything more than a place holder, but I will say I think this is the best the Bills have done in terms of giving themselves viable, reasonably priced options in a very long time.

I say we will not draft a QB round 1

Then both of you need to re-consider your comprehension as it's defined: "harass, criticize, or antagonize (someone) especially by provocatively disparaging or mocking public statements, postings, or acts" In fact, by that very definition calling out mead as troll, only reveals the originator of the insult to be the one "trolling".....dude made a statement that was intended to be worthy of discussion, not mocking or harass or antagonize....it's a message board, intended for good, vigorous discussion...when someone starts spewing insults, we all have our intellect diminished. Moreover, be careful to pay attention to the character of the person you're so willing to throw darts at, because everyone has their days, but character stands the test of time....mead is far more balanced and even-keeled than most here....and too often on this board over the last couple months I've seen more and more of the juvenile, bully tactics to try and get people to back off their opinion or thoughts...it's uncalled for and it reduces us in our humanity. Dunkirk Don or Chadwick Chad or fricken Sesame Street Dumbass, whatever his name was, was virulently attacked and yeah, he was just a buffoon with a medium, but it became so ugly....I questioned his information, and allowed time to do the testing....but attacking anyone for any reason, it's just...why? Read it and move on or don't click at all....no need for it to become some macho bravado b.s. about this and that....this is supposed to be fun...and interesting....and yes, thought provoking about what many of us consider our favorite sport and our favorite team.....that's it. Real life occurs outside this board...and attacking someone crosses that line, IMO. -
Lost in QB buzz... No help at WR or TE
BigBuff423 replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To me it would have been nice to have a guy like Virgil Green to help in the run game, but with Clay and O'Leary finding his niche at the end of last season, I don't think TE is a real "need"...add to that Logan Thomas will be back and that it normally takes about 3 years before a TE really shows their worth, I think O'Leary is due for a decent season on top of Clay and the potential Thomas holds. Now, if Ebron were to be brought in at a very reasonable contract, that would be a nice "get", but I don't think it's too much of a need for this team right now.... WR on the other hand, truly is....and I think Beane believes he's got two real quality players in Benjamin and Zay, and wants to find that Hyde / Poyer value type of WR in FA and most likely try to add one in the Draft, therefore no big pursuit of a FA WR...the second wave WR is probably more to his liking. -
I say we will not draft a QB round 1
BigBuff423 replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First, by referring to mead as a troll, only demonstrates how little you know about the people on this board. How about you stick around for a while and get to know the personalities of the posters who've been here for quite some time. And honestly, you could make that argument for a few of the unfortunate souls on this board, but mead isn't one of them. If you pay attention you'll see that he is nearly always diplomatic and fair and takes the time to try and get to know people on this board....even when they're less than friendly to him, he gives them the benefit of the doubt. So, step away for a moment and recognize there is absolutely no reason to throw insults or attempt to disparage a person's character on a subject related to sports. Secondly, mead I'd say like many others that anything is possible, but in the scenario where they don't Draft one really high, i.e. 1-4, I still think it's likely they Draft one in the 1st round, so even if it is Jackson or Rudolph or the like later in the 1st round....now, with all their Draft capital it is "possible" (although extremely unlikely) they take their MLB at 12, DT at 22, and then trade back into the 1st round for a QB they really like but don't believe will last to the middle of the 2nd round....whomever that might be. But, the question - as many are not on this board - is worthy of at least some thought.... -
Great deal - shows competency at the highest level; also seems to indicate, as others have said, that the targeted QB is someone who will need a year or two to reach NFL ready - so Darnold or Allen...?

Who would you rather have: Luck or Foles?
BigBuff423 replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
On the surface, and certainly two years ago, this would be true....but keep in mind, since this is all hypothetical, I would presume Luck would cost much, much less to obtain while Foles' health is not an issue we know about at the moment...so, Luck will cost more and be of a greater risk due to injury and not to mention the Cap hit would be tremendous. As for Foles, you could in theory obtain him for fewer / lower picks, a significantly reduced cost, and STILL Draft a guy you really like in the 1st round. So, just based on that, it's not a terrible argument... In other words, I don't think it's as obvious as you make it out to be when you consider all the variables. -
I get the apprehension about what's happening because we're all sitting in the dark....but, if the Bills trade Hughes and others, they have a plan....I trust this FO more than any other since the Polian era. Additionally, the Bills will have a huge Cap cushion next year, so IF the Bills were to trade all these picks for the franchise QB everyone has been hoping for, they will have a bunch of money to surround the kid with talent...and this year, it won't be so bad either regardless of what happens. Miller I suspect returns to form with a new Offensive Coordinator and design, more of a power run scheme, a younger and presumed much better QB, and just by the numbers, there will be new talent on the Defensive side of the ball as well. Does that automatically translate to 10 wins or more? Well of course not...but, Beane and his team know what they're doing and keep in mind, the Bills haven't truly ventured into FA yet...they signed a CB that can start opposite White, a bruising RB that can balance out whichever primary RB they have (Shady or someone else), they traded for a true #1 WR last year that is effectively like Drafting one in the 3rd round this year and the Bills have the position to move all over the Draft just as it stands this morning....and again, no FAs as of yet. I know they will be cognizant of Comp Draft picks, Beane was clear about that - but they still need to sign people and given how Poyer and Hyde worked out last year, I think Beane and his team are solid on this one.
-
Obviously the money will do the talking as to Denver's approach to the Draft, but it's also possible Elway likes a guy such as Mike White or Lauletta and wants him to ride the pine for a few years while he grows...IF that's the case, it would seem Denver is not going to take a QB in the 1st round, based on the aforementioned numbers of course. Either way, I think this helps the Bills in a variety of ways.
-
Honestly, this makes sense if the Bills plan on going all in on a Rookie QB, ala trade up. Moore’s numbers are decent for a back-up and you don’t want a back-up pushing to start if you’re pushing all your chips in for the Rookie. You want a mentor and a guy who knows his role and yet, can fill in properly if needed.

So... Is A.J. McCarron Back in play?
BigBuff423 replied to #34fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I’ll say this: IMO, Beane and his staff have generated a little bit of trust and it’s widely held his staff is exceptional. So, i choose to trust their decisions in this matter. If they pass on AJ then he’s not good enough to help them take the next step. If he’s signed, they believe he can be a vital part of the process toward a Championship. Im good with giving them the latitude to prove it without going into full panic if I disagree with their decision or struggle to understand it. -
Bills signings & TT trade point to trade up
BigBuff423 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One could argue that these moves just as much point to signing big FA...Cousins? Because he would take at least 2/3 of Cap money left and by trading Tyrod they freed approximately $10 million, and then the Bills have all these Draft picks to fill their needs. -
Bills signings & TT trade point to trade up
BigBuff423 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So, to clarify, you're saying Rosen / Darnold are not worth trading up for, but Mayfield is? Just asking...not being a douche....not saying I agree, but wanted to make sure. -
donte moncrief might be a guy
BigBuff423 replied to BeastMode54's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like Moncrief, when he came out I liked him for the Bills, and that hasn't changed. He's the kind of value WR, along with Albert Wilson, that probably greatly enhance the Bills WR corp. -
First, Tyrod is not going into camp with the Bills - be it he's cut or he's traded and I think traded is the best option. Second, no to Bridgewater - for all the reasons everyone else has said. Third, I think a guy like Matt Moore fits what the Bills want: value. They want a guy that can come in when needed without feeling that the game is already lost the second he goes to the huddle, but does not create a Cap situation for them. Fourth, I don't think the Bills get Foles unless it's at their price; meaning, if Philly wants a 1st, no way, if they're willing to take back their own 2nd - then maybe. Because at that point, Tyrod's money goes to other FA needs, ala WR or Offensive line, etc. But that also means, they're less likely to trade up because the guy they get is a guy who needs a year or two to be NFL ready, so Mike White or maybe Rudolph (for strengthening) and they use their 1st round picks on DT / LB / WR, areas that need help this year. In all honestly, none of us know for certain what will happen, but I just don't think the Bills want Tyrod anywhere near the team come camp time and his value is never higher than it is in FA and Draft when teams are trying to set their starting roster before the real off season work begins in the building.

Teams do draft elsewhere than QB....
BigBuff423 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And understandably, history favors taking a QB high in the 1st round....but that could also be that those QBs get the most time to develop? In other words, when a guy like Peterman is Drafted, he gets a few games or in some cases a season, but rarely does he get 3 full years to show he can develop into a good QB. AJ McCarron is the talk of Cleveland right now with Hue trying to trade for him (and failing, ugh) and possibly the Browns signing him once FA starts. AJ McCarron was a winning QB at 'Bama, but he wasn't highly regarded as an elite passer yet now, he comes from the shadows as a guy about to make some coin and be considered a "good QB" because he had a decent handful of games. Look at Alex Smith...if he wasn't Drafted 1st overall, I'm not sure he'd be where he is today. People, not saying you, forget how bad he was the first several years he was in the league. It wasn't until Harbaugh came along, that he became a good to great QB. What Harbaugh did was take the pressure of his shoulders by utilizing a great ground game, solid Defense, and simply asked Alex to make the throws without giving it back to the other team, and he did that quite well. Andy Reid has a penchant for maximizing a QBs talent, Doug Pederson is showing to be the same, and there are others but my point being, I think this Draft will reveal one or two QBs Drafted 2nd to 4th round that end up being very good NFL QBs while two to three teams are going to swing and miss on the top 5 QBs in this Draft. Just in recent years, R. Wilson, Andy Dalton, Dak Prescott, Jimmy G., Kirk Cousins, and Derek Carr show this can be done. That's not to mention what's occurred in the years prior. -
Teams do draft elsewhere than QB....
BigBuff423 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This example, as with other years, is why I don't want the Bills to trade UP....I'd prefer they trade back but at the least stay put. People are looking at this QB class in the same view as the 1983 or 2004 QB class....and it might well be. But, history is littered with good to great QBs in the 2nd / 3rd round who developed well and lead a franchise. I won't even consider the rare exceptions in Brady, Romo, and Warner but there again, good to great QBs (1 HOFer, one guaranteed HOFer, and a great QB) were all discovered very late. It takes a good scouting department and bit of fortune but almost every year, there is a QB who emerges from the depths and becomes a good to great QB. Will Dak continue to be good? Who knows...but the arrow is pointing in the right direction. Even Aaron Rodgers was taken late 1st when everyone assumed he would go top 5....again the point is, just trading UP does not guarantee you a great QB - and that's assuming you CAN trade up as Hapless laid out in the post. I for one would rather sit at 21, see what comes to the Bills, trade a couple players for more picks and to free up some FA money, and look at ways to complete the team. This includes a QB, but it doesn't have to be at 2 or 3 or 4, it can be late 1st round or 2nd round depending on who is there and how the Draft goes.
