My point was that 19th pick in the first round should not be expected to be a star. Sure, you *hope* to get a great player there, but finding a good long term starter should be the goal and that isn't guaranteed, either as the list of players picked there shows. I am not saying that Lawson is great, but I thought that he played pretty well last year in the opportunities that he had. If he develops into a strong run defender who can produce 6-8 sacks per year, then I believe that would not be a disappointment based on his draft position.

Michael Griffin, Jeff Otah, Jeremy Maclin, Sean Weatherspoon, Prince Amukamara, Shea McLellin, Justin Pugh, Ja’Wuan James, Cameron Erving, Shaq Lawson. Those are the last 10 19th overall picks through 2016 (long enough ago for those picks to give a feel for their career) - Shaq Lawson fits in that list well. Griffin, Maclin, Pugh and James have been good multi-year starters with Griffin likely the best. Otah, Weatherspoon haven’t had success, McLellin has been ok, but no better than Lawson. My my point is that we all get enamored with the draft prospects of the current year and it is easy to think that all top round picks should be dominant players, but that is simply waaay overestimating the impacts that you can really expect from first round picks. Be happy if you can find a good long-term starter.

New offseason territory and a Draft Would Ya?
OldTimer1960 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Their 2 4ths might get them into the back end of the 3rd if they wanted. If the right player was still available after their 2nd pick, they might be able to trade their 3rd and both 4ths to get back to the middle of the 2nd. They don’t really have enough value in picks to do both. -
I think that Dillard should really be a consideration. If they think that he can become a good run blocker and get stronger, then an outstanding pass-blocker warrants attention there. i think that Oliver may not be thought of as highly among NFL teams as his early draft projections suggested. He is very undersized and did not play at the highest level of competition. i can't see Jonah Williams as a strong contender for the pick, but I could see them being high on Jawaan Taylor's power and athletic ability for is size at RT. I do strongly believe that the Bills want to be a run heavy O early in Allen's career. Have a look at Dillard's "tape" - he is a ready-made pass protector who lacks experience and some strength to be a top run blocker. Thing is, both strength and experience can be addressed.

He is a guy who could be a great blocking TE if he has agility and hands to be a little threat as a receiver. I understand he converted fro TE to OT in college, so dropping weigh and going back could be pretty natural. I think the Bills still want a run heavy offense and he could be a good addition to that. I saw saw maybe some upside in Croom last year as a receiver, but I don’t think that Croom, Kraft and Fisher would prevent them from taking a TE high if there was one available that they really like.

Full Intelligent Breakdown of DK Metcalf

It isn’t limited to this post, but there is way too much hyperbole about “elite talent”, “generational players”, “game changers”, etc. Likely there will be some very good, maybe great players to come out of this draft, but finding those few that might fit that description is the challenge. In no draft is pick 9 guaranteed (or even likely) to produce a great player - let alone “finding a game changing starter in the 2nd or 3rd”. I’m not saying that there aren’t good players in this draft, but being realistic, if the Bills find a good long term starter at 9 and eventual starters in 2nd and 3rd, it would be a GREAT draft. That kind of haul doesn’t happen a lot. -

Do you mean Ed Oliver? If you are saying it would be an egregious error to pass on him, it would lend credibility to your argument to get his name right. FWIW, I am not sold on Oliver, but could see why they might want to take him. I see him as a gamble at his (under) size. His quickness could prevail at the NFL level, too, or he might struggle being 15-20 lbs undersized (or somewhere in between) -
For sure, Metcalf is really an athletic freak - a term that I think is very over-used. If the coaches whom he played against can explain his lack of production compared to his teammates by saying that their objective was to stop him first, then great - otherwise a big red flag. That doesn’t mean that Metcalf is a hard pass for me, but I think he is a high ceiling low floor prospect.
-
This is (IMHO) a fallacy. Go back even 20 years and assess how many All Pros were picked at 9. Then also look at how many 9th picks have truly not panned out, then look at the remaining picks that had good, not great, careers. I think that you’ll find that the bust equal or exceed the stars. Key is to find high floor guys that can be good starters and hope a few of them turn out to be great. Avoid the high ceiling, low floor guys like plague.

Pretty realistic- most of the mocks on here are showing players in every round that are likely to be picke a round or two before these mocks having them going to Bills

Hockenson at #9 Change My Mind
OldTimer1960 replied to Mike in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree - I think DL is squarely in the conversation at pick 9 - likely the highest rated player available will be a DT or possibly DE. Even with the FA signings, I think an OT will still be a strong consideration, if the team feels that the value is close - they have brought in a guy who could play RT, if needed in Nsekhe, but at 33 y.o. he isn’t the long-term answer. As others have mentioned, I think Devin White (LB) could be in the mix as well. Lorenzo Alexander is still starting at one LB spot and there is no candidate on the roster behind him to take his place after this season. If they don’t take an OL in round one, I think that will be a priority in the 2nd. If Risner or McGary are available, I think they will be tempted. -
Post your mock draft here

I like the first 2 picks, but I don’t believe that there is any chance that Sternberger is available late in round 4. -
Who's your top 9? (QBs excluded)

I could see them drafting White and moving Edmunds to OLB where they could use his height and speed in more blitz situations. That could help both pass rush and run D with one pick. -
Hockenson at #9 Change My Mind
OldTimer1960 replied to Mike in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t think that is the case at all. Some had Hockenson high before the combine, and his test results were very good, but not eye catching enough to move him way up. He is valued as a well-rounded TE who is a great blocker and good receiver. Most of the TEs coming from college are not good blockers - and blocking is a big part of playing TE. -
Hockenson at #9 Change My Mind
OldTimer1960 replied to Mike in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Finding a good solid starter at the 9th pick is fine. Here are the last 10 9th overall picks: BJ Raji, CJ Spiller, Tyron Smith, Luke Kuekly, Dee Milliner, Anthony Barr, Ereck Flowers, Leonard Floyd, John Ross, Mike McGlinchey I would say 2 of 10 (20%) were great - Smith and Kuekly), 4 were good at least for a while (Raji, Spiller, Barr, Floyd) 3 never panned out (Milliner, Flowers, Ross) and McGlinchey was promising in his rookie year, but too soon to call. So, if you agree with my assessment above, pick 9 has a 20% chance of being great, 40% of being pretty good for at least some time, 30% chance of being a bust and we don’t know about last year’s 9th pick yet. -

Are you just making an observation or suggesting that he would not be guilty (if allegations are true) because she should have known better? -

If th e report is true, his son has a broken arm. Now, that doesn’t MEAN, that Hill caused it, but given that he choked his girlfriend when she was pregnant- note that he pled guilty to that - it certainly SUGGESTS that he likely had a hand in it. -
I can get behind the Browns as a second team - their fans have been tortured as well. i like what Cleveland is building, but I’m not sure that OBJ is a great idea. He is surely a “top-end piece”, but has potential to disrupt that team. i understand “going for it”, but not sure he is an end-game piece.

If The Bills Stay @ #9, Who Is Your Guy?
OldTimer1960 replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Difficult question to answer depending on what happened in FA. Let’s assume that they signed a likely starting OC and possibly an upgrade over Jordan Mills at RT. Did they re-sign Jonathan Miller to play RG? if they have only signed 2 FA OL and they had taken a non-OL in the 1st, then I would look very hard at an OL in the 2nd round before I would take any WR or TE. That isn’t to say that I don’t think that there are not good prospects among Debo Samuel, N’Keal Harry, Kelvin Harmon Paris Campbell etc, but rather that I think the OL is as big a need or more than receivers and that good WRs are of little value if the OL can’t provide at least some protection to the QB (who showed promise, but is still no sure thing). -

However, he did elevate the play of that college significantly. There is a difference between Allen not throwing for 4,000 yards on a team that was outgunned almost every game and DK Metcalf who is a physical marvel, but was the 3rd leading WR on a Mississippi team where AJ Brown had 2x the receptions that Metcalf did. Note that I am not saying that Metcalf may not become a great NFL WR, but why did AJ Brown and Demarcus Lodge out produce him at Ole Miss? To to be clear, I could understand why the Bills might consider him at 9 - he is obviously a hard working player, just look at his body. He comes from an NFL family line and I’ve not seen anything saying that he isn’t a worker or that he is a bad teammate. -
Antonio Brown is GREAT, BUT he is 31 and will be in decline within 2 years (IMHO). If the trade involved a 3rd round pick or later, then I could get interested in paying him a lot for 2 years. I wouldn’t want to trade even this year’s 2nd for a 2 year, very high paid WR, given Allen’s youth and limited talent around him. Remember, if you trade a high pick for Brown, you deplete cap space for FAs and presumably trade away a top 3 round pick.
