A Few Thoughts about the Giants game, in no particular order
Utah John replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tough luck for Edmunds, not getting the pick and probably a pick six. He's playing well, as far as I can see, but getting very little ink. Is that a good thing or a bad thing for a MLB? -
Smart D against a team that runs well but which has an old QB and injured WRs. Barkley might be the best RB in the league right now, and the Bills stopped him enough to win.

One of the nice things about the Bills under McD is the businesslike approach. One week at a time, one game plan at a time, and good solid effective schemes to attack the other team's defense and handle their offense. This is not the week to look ahead to the Patriots. This is the week to prepare for the Bengals.

Game clock at the end with 5 minutes to play
Utah John replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Seems the like refs screw something up on timekeeping every single week. This should be the most basic job of all. Of course one of those times victimized the Saints. That team is just snake-bit. Did anyone else catch what happened today? The Saints strip sacked Goff, and the ball bounced to a defender, who ran it back about 80 yards for a TD, in a very close defensive game. The Saints should have gone ahead on the play. Instead a ref blew the play dead. They're supposed to let the play proceed if it's close between a fumble and an incomplete pass, but instead they blew it dead. The Saints did get the ball but way back in their own end. The Bills have been screwed by refs, but never so many times so badly in a short span of games. If what's been happening to the Saints happened to the Bills, we'd be throwing refs over Niagara Falls. Without a barrel. -
Currently the only way it would be possible is if some team's home stadium was unavailable for some reason, and their game had to be moved somewhere, and it just happened to be that an away team played both games there. In a year or two it will be possible in Los Angeles, if the same away team is scheduled to visit to play the Rams and the Chargers. I sure hope it isn't the Bills. They historically haven't traveled well to the West Coast, particularly for two games in a row.

Thursday Night Football Tampa at Car, NFL Network

A close game but not really a good game. Two pretty bad teams seeing which one would lose. Not like the Saints - Texans game. Oh my that was exciting. -
Tee Higgins future bills receiver
Utah John replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If next year's draft was done this past spring, yeah, I could see going high for a WR like Jeudy. That's probably the area with the least blinding talent on the team. At least that's how it looks now. Let's see how things go this year, and who develops. -
And why not? You're only going to get one penalty for holding, and the game will be over so who cares about the penalty in the first place?

WR Terrance Williams works out for Buffalo
Utah John replied to BillsFanForever19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Beane is just doing due diligence. Know who's out there, what they can do. I wonder who pays the travel expenses for these guys. Most are wannabees who aren't going to make it, and who probably can't afford unlimited plane fare. Plus how could these guys hold down regular jobs while traveling all over for workout beauty shows? -
If it's a 25 yard FG, you're on their 7. What you do is snap the ball on fourth down and run around as long as possible, maybe until the game clock runs out. Even if you lose 10 yards they have no time for their offense.

Not that our other CBs are bad, but if you were the Jets wouldn't you prefer to avoid throwing to White's side of the field?

Sterling Shepard Being Evaluated for Concussion
Utah John replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills should beat the Giants with or without Shepard in the lineup. -
The Jets defense looked really good until their MLB went out. If they get him back, their D will steal some games for them, as it almost did yesterday. Fortunately our O got untracked, and our D is even better than their D. The Jets early schedule this year is almost as brutal as ours was last year. By the time it gets softer, their season will be over.

If the shorter throws are what the defense was giving, he should take them. I thought he played pretty well in the first half, except for the strip sack fumble. The two INTs were not his fault, his accuracy was good, and he threw it away when he had to. The fumble on fourth down didn't matter since the play wasn't going to work and it would have been a turnover either way.

A lot of what's important to NFL players is respect. Other players notice how stars are treated. Washington didn't even have Adrian Peterson suit up today -- how can you do that and not have other players notice? Shady could still have been very good for the team this year, but he wasn't going to get the carries he's used to. It wouldn't sit well for a rookie to become the lead back while he watches from the sidelines. Cutting him instead of trading him? That shows respect too. Instead of getting a low draft pick for a HOF candidate, they let him pick his team, and possibly get a ring at the end of his career. Good for him. Shady responded with very appreciative tweets about the team and about Buffalo. I think this was handled correctly by the Bills.

Josh Allen - week one report card
Utah John replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Allen played OK. One fumble was clearly his fault, the other fumble didn't matter because the Bills were going for it on fourth down, and the play was blown up and wouldn't have succeeded even if there was no fumble. So it would have been a turnover on downs or a turnover from a fumble. His passing was much more accurate today than usually the case last year. He has developed the ability to drop the ball between two defenders in front of and behind the receiver. He had very few cringe-worthy passes. As for Darnold, he was OK too, but he was playing against a much better pass defense so his yards were limited. I don't think any Jets fans are calling him a bust. He's going to be a very good player for a long time, and the Allen-Darnold rivalry (between two good friends) will be ours to enjoy for a decade. If I have one concern on offense, it's not QB, it's O line. It's better than last year but that's a low bar. Either the Jets have a far above average D line, or the Bills are going to continue to struggle to open holes between the tackles. -
[Name Only Title] Frank Gore
Utah John replied to Brianmoorman4jesus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Did Gore fumble? Did he miss any assignments in pass protection? Does he help Singletary prepare for the pro game and being a professional? The guy is doing his job and he provides leadership. I am glad to have him on the team and on the field. The times he was running in the first half, the Jets still had their MLB in the game. Him getting hurt seemed to have a lot to do with the Bills' O suddenly getting going -- although that's also when Singletary came in. Gore still has gas in the tank for one more solid year before he hangs em up and starts counting down to the HOF. -
I think the Bills were a better team than the Jets last year and the Bills have done things to get better. It sounds like the Jets have also addressed weaknesses, although I haven't been following the Jets closely. Should be a good game.

The Most Memorable Season Openers in Bills History
Utah John replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have to agree that the 1974 opener was even better than the 1973 opener. Beating the Raiders on two fourth-quarter Fergie TD passes, sandwiched around a Braxton fumble returned for a TD. I was working at Rich then, selling beer as a vendor, and I was in the stands screaming with everyone else. -
The Most Memorable Season Openers in Bills History
Utah John replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No question about it. 1973. Bills beat the Pats 31-13 in Foxboro. OJ rushed for 250 yards, a new single--game record, on his way to breaking 2000 in a single season. And the Bills improved a huge amount, finishing 9-5 but unfortunately missing the playoffs. (Nine wins can get a team into the playoffs now, in a 16 game season. We wuz robbed.)
