Past Sammy and Woods there are 3 spots to be had on this roster at WR (Easley has a good shot to be the 6th WR for Special teams purposes). Lewis, Goodwin, Listenbee, Hankerson, and the rest of the camp guys all will be competing for those 3 roster spots. Should be an interesting camp battle but really shows the lack of depth on the Bills roster at the WR position.

I would rank NT as the teams biggest need. Henderson, Mills, and Cyrus are nothing great but I think that it is possible one of those 3 could emerge and do a decent job at RT, not inspiring too much confidence but there is some room for hope there. But the team does not have a true NT on the roster. And for Rex's scheme I think you need a true NT. Dareus at the nose seems like a waste, Kyle Williams could be at the nose but he would also be a waste at the nose, and Washington is unproven and smaller.

Salary Cap Thread (post-Cordy's Glenn extension)
billsfan89 replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hopefully the Bills can resign Gilmore. I worry about having 2 big important players possibly hitting free agency in Tyrod and Gilmore. The Bills should let Tyrod play out the season, no reason to commit there and you can always franchise tag him if needed. But Gilmore needs to be locked up, the Bills can't have a situation where they tag Tyrod and then Gimore hits the market. 6 foot tall fast corners with good instincts don't grow on trees. The Bills could also free up some more cap space to roll over for next year by getting an extension done. If the Bills do have some money to play with I would likely target two positions for some cheap to modest acquisitions in June cuts. I think the Bills desperately need a true NT on the roster if there is a vet NT out there that they can scoop up at a cheap to modest price I would do it, it should be priority number 1. RT/Swing tackle would be another position the team should scour for a cheap option at. But I wouldn't splurge on anyone. 1- Because no free agents are going to command or be worth big money at this stage. 2- The Bills cap next season needs as much money rolled over to it as possible. Getting 8-10 million roll over for next season could cover half of Tyrod's contract if needed. But if a solid NT or RT is out there post June 1st I would like to see the Bills be active in trying to find some additional proven options there. -
Pass, you don't give up a primo pick for a RT that's older and going to cost a lot on your cap. The Bills have to resign Gilmore and possibly give a big deal to Taylor. I don't think they can afford both if they add another big cap number. Now that's not saying RT isn't a big need on the roster but I would rather roll with what's on the roster right now if it means that they can have a good chance at retaining Gilmore and TT as well as keep their draft choices.

I think this could be Shady's last year with the team. He is a very good player but he always seems to get banged up in recent years. His guaranteed money ends after this season so cutting him would be fairly simple after this season. And with Gilmore and TT needing new deals they could really need the 8 million in cap space, they could also have a good RB in Karlos waiting in the wings. I think that he will still give the team good production but he likely won't be worth the huge cap commitment and I don't think he would restructure his deal to stay with the team. I think they get a solid year out of him this season and then trade or cut him, mainly because of how strapped the team could be in retaining key pieces.

By the time Sammy's contract is due up 3 years from now (2 more years left on his deal plus you assume they have a 5th year option) there will be plenty of space to fit him in even if TT, Glen, and Gilmore are on huge deals. First off as you said the cap increases are a plus but players will decline and their will be cuts, the McCoy's, InCog's, E.Woods, Kyle Williams, Jerry Hughes, and Clay's currently on big deals will likely decline and their bigger numbers be off the team at least that will be the case for most of them. I would worry about trying to fit Glenn, Gilmore, and TT onto next years roster as the amount of fat to cut next season will be a lot less and TT's contract could be huge. If they can make it with those three next year, I would feel very comfortable about fitting players onto the team soon after.

RD 6, Pick 192: WR Kolby Listenbee, TCU
billsfan89 replied to Steve Billieve's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here are some negatives about him from a pre-draft scouting report. Seems like a very raw prospect in certain areas. Hand span (8 1/4″) raises red flag. Average hand-eye coordination and drops some throws he should catch. Often traps short-to-intermediate throws. Flashes ability to make contested catches underneath and over the middle but lean and needs to get stronger. Above average vertical jump and average arm length yet below average in jump ball situations. Needs to do a better job of adjusting and establishing body position when the ball is in the air. -
Coming off of a highly productive year and has had a good amount of production before this season he justified the extension. Tight ends are in demand as having a good tight end has become is pretty fundamental in a modern passing game, combo that with the fact that tightends aren't super easy to find and you get the contracts inflating.

Bears release Matt Slauson -Signed w/ San Diego
billsfan89 replied to JM57's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the Glenn Extension gives the Bills a little wiggle room to work with to try and poach a vet June cut I would rather they go after a traditional NT. The Bills need a NT desperately. Dareus at NT seems like a waste and they don't have anyone on the roster that could fill that role as far as I know. But a vet Guard or Tackle wouldn't be a bad idea either. Either way I hope the front office is on the look out for a vet either at NT or along the O-line. -
What Kolby at WR does for the Bills right now
billsfan89 replied to KingRex's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good hands and good speed are the two tools that I feel you can't teach at WR, and at 6 feet tall he isn't super small. So I liked the pick from that perspective as I think you can teach him better route running over the next couple of years. I don't expect much from him this year, maybe they try to run some sets to get him out in some space or throw a bomb to him a few times. But I doubt he contributes much this year. But maybe after a full off-season and rookie year he goes into 2017 a bit more polished and then real progression begins to happen. It's really the type of player you should take in round 6, 2-3 great tools you can't teach but will need a lot of raw development time. -
RD 3, Pick 80: DT Adolphus Washington, The Ohio State U
billsfan89 replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hopefully they can grab a space eater in the 4th or 5th. Maybe they feel like they can nab a vet NT as Rex's NT's have never been high up picks. Seems like Adolphus is a long term replacement for Kyle. Don't love the pick, don't hate it. Good to see that they are loading up on front 7 talent. In the past 4-5 drafts the front office seems to be in tune with what the needs on the roster are. -
RD 2, Pick 41: LB Reggie Ragland, University of Alabama
billsfan89 replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's kind of my view, Ragland fits the need for an early down run stuffing MLB who can play with some versatility. A bit of a high price to pay for a type of player the team needed. -
The more I think about it the Bills go WR with their 2nd round pick. The Bills have 4 massive needs after Lawson being drafted. RT, MLB. NT, and WR. MLB probably being the least urgent and a position I think they address in round 3 given their draft history at that position. So that leaves RT, NT, and WR as targets for the second round. I think they would be most comfortable with what they have on the roster at RT maybe deciding to bring in a tackle in round 4 or 5. So when you look at NT and WR, Rex's teams traditionally have found late round or cheap vets to play the space eater NT position. So that leaves WR as a position they likely look to target if the right player falls. That's my logic at least. But if I were drafting I would like to see a true NT type if one is available. The defense desperately needs one and with Lawson added to the line it could fill one last gaping hole in the front 7 esp if a depth MLB is added and Kyle Williams stays healthy.

What Front Do We Run?
billsfan89 replied to WhitewalkerInPhilly's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I see the Bills going one of three ways in round 2, RT, WR, or NT/DT. I think all three are valid needs so it will be interesting to see where they feel they can go. I think the team likely feels more confident in the options at RT than at NT or WR. But Rex always seems to find space eater NT's on the cheap. So I see the Bills going WR round 2, then they go MLB round 3 and depth needs the rest of the way. -
WR, NT/DT, or RT would be the positions I would like to see targeted. MLB's can be found in round 3 as I would feel confident in grabbing one there and platooning with what is on the roster. Finding a backup safety can also be picked up in round 4. If the Bills struck big On Shaq at OLB and can find a solid starter at either WR, NT/DT, or RT and find a depth piece or two in the mid rounds then the team has a real chance to make the playoffs. But that's a lot of ifs, so much riding on this draft for the upcoming season.

RD 1, Pick 19: DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson University
billsfan89 replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Position wise the Bills got the "Type" Of player they needed, but the shoulder injury is a huge concern. I like the pick but as always it is wait and see. Pass rush for now has been upgraded plenty of ways they can go tomorrow in round 2. -
JW sez Bills going D with first pick
billsfan89 replied to Thurmal34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I see the Bills either going DT or pass rusher. But if they go offense I see it being a WR. They need some more punch on the outside and it's honestly the best position to go if they go offense (RT could be nabbed in round 2 or 3). -
Why The Bills Should Draft Offense
billsfan89 replied to Chilly's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Pick 19 should be best player available at a position of need. WR, RT, OLB/pass rusher, DT, or NT would all make fine selections at pick 19. WR and OLB/Pass Rusher would be the best picks position wise. But whatever player the Bills take at pick 19 they need to make sure that the player they get makes an impact right away. The Bills need to find 2 starters in this draft along with another contributor. So I have no issue with the Bills taking a WR at pick 19 if they manage to get one of the better receivers in the draft. I think the Bills scoop up a MLB in round 3 to pair with Brown or add depth, which would leave the first two rounds open to take the best players available at several positions of need. And then use the 4th and 5th round picks to sure up some depth along the roster. -
Guess who we drafted 5 picks ahead of Tom Brady?

Every team passed on Brady 5 times including the Pats*. Can't cry over spilt milk. -
New Metric proves Bills one of worst teams at Drafting
billsfan89 replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The past 20 years I wouldn't argue, the Bills drafting from 1996 to 2010 was pretty horrid with few exceptions. But that's kind of misleading since the Bills drafting since 2011 has improved tremendously. 2011 draft produced Dareus and Aaron Williams two highly productive starters, they also found a mid round gem in Searcy and a solid backup in Hairston. 2012 produced two highly productive starters in Gilmore and Glenn and some mid round gems in Bradham and Brooks. 2013 was the worst draft in the past 5 but still produced Kiko who gave a great rookie year and was traded for a productive player in McCoy, Manuel was a bust but Woods has proven to be productive in his role. 2014 Watkins looks like a stud that at least paid dividends on his high cost, Cyrus looks like a bust but Preston Brown looks like he could be productive and Henderson could develop into a late round starter. 2015 Darby who looks like a stud, Miller looks like he could be a cog on the O-line and Karlos Williams could be a mid round steal. Since 2011 the drafts have consistently produced quality players with 2013 being the only completely weak draft. Overall I think using 20 years when almost all those regimes have completely turned over since then. -
The trade downs seem to work for every team except the Browns. I am pretty sure the Browns would like to have Sammy Watkins and Julio Jones instead of the players they drafted with those trade downs. So while I think the Eagles gave up a solid price for pick 2 it's not as though they completely !@#$ed themselves that much. This year they lose a 3rd and 4th, next year they give up their 1st, and the year after a 2nd. That's not a complete bankrupting of picks for that trade up and the Eagles desperately need a QB. While the Browns still get to pick at slot number 8 and they get 2 good picks later in the draft at pick 77 and 100, then they set themselves up with an extra 1st next year and an extra 2nd the year after. For a team looking to rebuild they get quantity this year and quality the two years after that should set them up nice for the long haul while still getting a good player this year.

Could likely be an experiment they do during camp, kick the tires on him at the position and then see what happens. I doubt they will be counting on him in any significant way.

Bills considering trading up to #2 pick
billsfan89 replied to Yeezus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it's more so due diligence than anything else. Seeing what that pick is going for and actually trading for it are two different things. Also this is just a report who knows if this is actually true or not. I wouldn't like the move as I like to give Tyrod the reigns for another season and see if he can be the guy and then invest those picks to sure up other areas of the roster. -
Zach Brown currently the team's starting weakside LB
billsfan89 replied to Gamache518's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A fall back option but I suspect that in rounds 3 or 4 a depth MLB gets brought in to compete with Brown. For one even if they feel confident with Brown there is zero depth at that position, and two I would think that their confidence in Brown is more so as a stop gap, so they will likely want someone they draft to come in and take his job, even if it's more so a mid round player. -
Texans release Brian Hoyer; signs with Bears
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He will get a nice contract from a team looking for a backup QB or a QB competition. He showed some flashes last year and got some starts with Cleveland plus the league always seems to love Brady backups. Maybe the Jets kick the tires on him if he comes significantly cheaper than Fitz. Either way shocked that the Texans released him since they don't have a great backup to Brock (Tom Savage will slide into their current backup depth chart). But maybe Hoyer asked for a release, wanting a chance to start somewhere?
