Keeping this defense together through Free Agency
billsfan89 replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Kyle retries at the end of the season (Which I think he will) Phillips becomes a bigger priority to resign. Phillips through 2 games has brought a lot of energy and pressure to the defense. I think the Bills price they can afford Phillips at is certainly much higher if Kyle doesn't come back for one more year. Granted if Kyle comes back then I think you still want Phillips back but maybe your price point is lowered a little big as you would have 3 decent to good players on the roster at DT and you need to spend on the offensive side of the ball. -

If Lorax continues his strong play I think the Bills have to bring him back as long as his demands are relatively in line with his production. Lorax is a versatile player who can be moved all around the front 7 and is a key pass rusher pretty much all over the defense. Add in his veteran presence and I think he would be a considerable loss for the defense. -

I think Kyle is calling it after this season but if he wants to come back for one more year the team would certainly welcome him back on a similarly priced deal. I also think Lorax will be back on a modest deal as his versatility and intangibles are invaluable to the team. Those two veteran leaders I am certain will be back. As far as the rest I think the only one I think that might get priced out of the Bills is Jordan Phillips. If Phillips strong play continues throughout the year than I think he will want to test the market and might get an offer that makes him too expensive. The Bills don't have to worry about anyone but Phillips getting a huge offer in my opinion. While I would love to keep Phillips because he seems to be a monster up the middle who brings good energy to the team there are costs you have to cut. Although if Kyle retires the amount you can spend on Phillips has to go up. -
We will see just how much cap space and draft picks they invest into the offensive side of the ball now that they have pretty much all or most of the pieces in place on the defensive side of the ball. I would hope they use all 3 picks in the first three rounds on the offensive side of the ball. I would also hope that they sign at least 3-4 starting caliber players on the offensive side of the ball in free agency (Particularly 1-2 players that can catch a pass and 2 interior OL players.) The offense needs at least 6 new starters if not more and the regime has no need to spend major money or early round draft resources into securing the defense (The depth needs can be filled out in the mid rounds and they can sign 1-2 players with cap space if the right players come at the right price, but the defense in 2019 does not need a major infusion of talent.) I am not sure how confident I can be in this regimes ability to sign or draft offensive talent mainly because they haven't really had the cap space to sign any offensive free agent over 3 million aav besides AJ who they shipped out (idiotically.) Their only major draft choices on offense (Besides Allen) are Dion Dawkins (who looks to be a pretty good pick) and Zay Jones (Who got off to a rough start to his career but is showing signs of life now.) There just really hasn't been much to go off of to see if they can acquire talent on the offensive side of the football.

Allen's ability to read a defense and work out of the pocket is not very good at the moment. That was the other big non accuracy related issue Allen had coming out of college. Although to be fair to Allen I don't know how much of his current level of play is related to scheme/coaching, lack of reviving talent, subpar O-line play, or his own short comings. It's probably a mix of all factors combined. But once again Raw rookie looks Raw. It's been 5 starts in this baptism by fire, he is 2-3 as a starter and has only had one game (the Vikings game) where he looked really good. The rest of the games Allen has looked poor and like a player that is going to need a lot of development. Overall I am a bit disappointed in the way that McBeane and this organization have handled the QB position and the offense in general. I get trading Tyrod on the last year of his deal for a solid but unspectacular return, I understand the cap situation and the trade up for talent made compromising parts of this roster a reality necessary to complete a more long term build, but I can't understand how this regime has set up it's biggest investment (Allen) up for failure. Even the Daboll coaching decision might not be the worst decision (Although I certainly did not understand the hire) but how can this team have it's veteran starter behind you highly invested rookie QB be Nathan Peterman? How did they get fooled by him twice, how did they not learn that being good in the pre-season is not indicative of future success especially when the guy who is good in the pre-season has looked like hot garbage in the regular season the previous year. How could you trade AJ McCaron (a QB who probably is nothing more than a high end backup but certainly serviceable) when your only other option in front of a rookie QB is Nathan !@#$ing Peterman. This regimes obsession with him has to be one of the worst decisions they have ever made.

If Anderson is physically able he should start next week
billsfan89 replied to VW82's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Allen's injury won't be made worse by basic playing motions and he is able to Allen should play. If Allen is unable to go, Anderson has had over a week to study the playbook and will have a full week to practice and get a semblance of the playbook. I don't have high expectations for Anderson if he is called upon but we know Peterman can't get the job done. Why would Allen be losing the team anyway? The team is 2-3 with him as a starter and in the last game he lost it was Peterman who blew the game. Allen has made big plays and the defense and offense has to feel he gives them the best chance to win. -
Is Nate Peteman the worst QB in NFL history?
billsfan89 replied to bills6969's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Allen's struggles are justifiable (In a sense that he should be expected to struggle if put in this position.) If the Bills kept AJ or Tyrod and they were competent but got hurt and Allen was forced in and he looked like this I wouldn't think Allen is a bust or has no future. Allen was a raw prospect coming out and is surrounded by some lackluster talent. Its understandable that Allen would perform this way. What isn't understandable is why this coaching staff got fooled by Nathan Peterman not once but twice. What isn't defend-able is why they took until week 5 to sign a veteran backup when by week 2 it was clear that Peterman might not be good enough to start in the CFL. This coaching staff has an absurd loyalty to Peterman whose greatest accomplishment is the dude looked good in pre-season. -

Yes, he is awful. Idiots on here thinking because he looked good in pre-season he was better than Tyrod. -
The O-line despite the improvements they made to it is still pretty ass but Eli despite the bad O-line play should be producing more. I think the Giants likely are inline for a 3-5 win season. They should be picking high up enough to trade up for a QB. They probably will hold onto Eli for one more year to be a bridge QB in 2019 for whatever QB they draft in 2019 but I can't see Eli staying on beyond that unless he has some sort of remarkable turnaround in performance it is looking like the beginning of the end for Eli. I thought Eli could have had 2-3 more decent years in the tank myself but I still would have taken a QB at pick 2 because their offensive issues were more so related to bad O-line play and they still spent a wise pick on Hernandez in round 2 (Hernandez has been their best performing O-line player and one of the few reasons as to why they went from worst O-line in the league to simply a bad O-line.) I think it would have been much easier to find a top caliber RB like Barkley than it is to find a top QB prospect. But the Giants might be far worse than anyone though this season and instead of finishing with 7-9 wins like everyone projected them to they might be drafting top 6 which makes a trade up for a QB much less pricey.

The New York media has been up Mannings ass this season. They beefed up the O-line, added the top RB prospect, and they already had a quality pass catchers in Sheppard, Engram, and Odell, yet it is the offense that struggles (Their defense isn't the best but it is far from trash and with a good offense they should be able to compete with a average but certainly not bad defense.) No one is giving Eli a pass. Stop projecting your concerns about Allen onto a QB who is getting a lot of heat.

No Free Agent Wide Receivers?
billsfan89 replied to jtothebrown's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's October not April, if a player was half way decent he would be signed by now. That's not to say there might not be some slight upgrades out on the wire but there isn't anything meaningful out there at the moment. -
The levels of stratification with talent at linebacker are bigger than you think. But I do agree that coaching and putting players in a position to maximize their skill sets are huge component to getting productive levels of talent out of players. So much of coaching is understanding what players do and don't do well and putting them in positions to hide their weaknesses and maximize their strengths. The Pats are always getting the most out of role players and players who weren't able to be successful on other teams. That's a huge component of their success.

Week 6 predictions: Bills at Texans
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
4 Turnovers is a lot for any team in any given week, if it is going to take 4 turnovers to win the game than it is unlikely the Bills would win. I could see 5 sacks which would be tremendous but more than 2 turnovers is highly unlikely. I also think that the Texans would play uber conservative if their defense is coming out super dominant. I can also see the Texans getting 2-3 turnovers themselves. I hope you are right but I just can't see the Bills producing the insane turnover differential needed to win a tough away game like this esp after they got very fortunate with turnover the previous week (Turnovers in the NFL are partially luck/circumstance based.) Then again I thought the Titans game would be a loss for very similar reasons. -
Week 6 predictions: Bills at Texans
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Texans 24 Bills 13 Away game to a Texans team that has multiple premier pass rushers I don't see the offense being able to put up enough points and I don't think the defense will get the turnovers needed to keep the Texans off the scoreboard enough to win. This game will be a close defensive struggle until the fourth quarter when I think the Texans make it a two score game and just play conservative the rest of the way. I am very interested in seeing the defense and if they can keep the Texans offense off the scoreboard without getting the turnovers. Of course Allen's development always remains a point of interest. -
I don't think the Bills want to move Shady unless they get a 2nd round pick and a mid to late round pick back. I do think that the Bills know that the Eagles aren't giving back major players that help them win now. This would be a player for pick/picks type trade. The Eagles are the contending team looking to add talent not give back a lot of talent along with picks for a 30 year old RB not having the best season who also has a significant contract. They want Shady to complement their existing talent base and they don't want to give back talent in order to get Shady.
-
The Bills offense did consistently hang the defense out to dry. That being said I agree there were a lot of lucky plays for the defense including the drop. But the Bills defense did a good job consistently getting stops and making big plays. However the Bills did lose 3 points on a bonehead play with the botched snap so you do have to factor that in.
-
That's fair to say that's what you would want to take back but this move is a win now move for Philly to give up a pick/picks for a player that could help them make a run. They aren't going to send back a player like Agholor who helps them win now in a package for Shady that also includes draft capital. I think you could probably pry Warmack as he is a depth player but Philly wants to win in 2018 and they aren't giving up their second best WR, Draft capital, and their best backup OL for a 30 year old RB. It just doesn't line up with the needs of the Eagles to send back players in this type of deal.
-
As I said I wouldn't hate Shady for a 3rd straight up. Or Shady and a 6th for Warmack and a 3rd. But I wouldn't be as enthusiastic about netting a 3rd for our best most dynamic offensive player that could greatly help the current raw rookie QB greatly for only a 3rd round pick. A 2nd rounder is a return I would be much more comfortable with.
-
I think Allen's development this season could be negatively impacted by not having Shady the teams best offensive weapon out there. Shady does take a lot of pressure off of Allen which put Allen in better positions. Without Shady more of the offensive burden falls onto Allen and that might have negative longer term consequences. If I am taking that risk I am not sure a 3rd round pick would be a worthwhile return.
-
It would depend on what the Dolphins would want in return and what his 5th year option looks like (Miami picked up Parker's fifth year option.) If the Fins are looking to dump his contract for peanuts and his option isn't crazy than I wouldn't mind the Bills taking a chance. The WR free agent crop isn't crazy strong, Parker might be better than a lot of our free agent options.
-
Allen is a big reason why I would pause to trade Shady for a 3rd straight up. If Tyrod or a respectable vet QB was starting and Allen wasn't going to be thrown in until the last 5-6 games of the season I would not hesitate to trade Shady for a 3rd straight up. But if the long term game is to develop Allen then taking away his best offensive weapon (When he is already surrounded by such little talent) for a 3rd round pick gives me pause. Now if it was a 2nd round pick straight up I wouldn't hesitate to make the move because that return on Shady is too good to pass up despite the hurt that it could cause short term. I wouldn't hate Shady for a 3rd as I get that is a good return for an older player on a big contract (I would love to get Warmack as a throw in even if it meant kicking back a 6th or a 5th.)
-
Whatever you are on I will have two. Do you honestly think Philly is going to give up a swap of a 3rd and 5th along with one of their best receivers on a rookie contract and throw in Warmack for Shady a 30 year old RB not having the best season and on a significant contract? Get real here, this is a player for picks trade, maybe the Bills can get Warmack as a throw in but the Bills aren't prying away Agholor. Philly is trying to improve their chances to win now, giving up O-line depth and a good young WR (While also giving up draft assets) for a older running back just makes no sense.
