TBN: Way-too-early 53-man roster projection
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is actually such a great luxury to see a player like Bodine be on the roster bubble. I think Bodine is a good backup center. So to have him on the bubble shows the strength and effort they put into building both the starting O-line and the depth behind it. -
Which One - Fitz, Tyrod, or Barkley as Your Your Backup?
billsfan89 replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would have to defer on the scheme and what the offensive coaches think. Clearly they like Barkley and I am fine with Barkley as the backup. However if you put all three on the same team or with similar talent levels I would say that Tyrod would win the most games. Yes Tyrod is too conservative but not making mistakes and being conservatives wins games esp with a good defense. Add in what Tyrod brings running the ball and it is a more consistent formula than Barkley and Fitz who might be more dynamic at times but also produce a lot of turnovers and mistakes. -
Lawson's 5th yr option ($9.451M) declined & Ziggy update
billsfan89 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Shaq has a breakout 2019 The Bills can franchise him or transition tag him. But I think it is hard to commit nearly 10 million to an underperforming DE. By the end of 2019 the Bills will know what Shaq is and will be able to properly assess what his value is. I think that if you commit to a large 5th year option you lose your flexibility and while it is a bit of a risk if he has a strong season I think it is better to worry about having to keep a good player who will be a free agent then to have to worry about being locked into a underperforming player. -
Josh has to hit the layups with consistency. Cole should help with getting a reliable underneath option and a savvy receiver in terms of coming back to Josh when he scrambles (he did that so well with Dak.) I know Josh will do good things getting the ball downfield esp with Brown and Foster as burners. However can he make those reliable throws that move the chains consistently? As much as I love Josh he misses too many easy throws that are on him. Now this isn't to say I don't have faith in Josh as he works hard and has already shown in his rookie year the ability to be coached and improve. But he has a long way to go in a lot of aspects of his game.

RD 1, Pick 9: DT Ed Oliver, University of Houston
billsfan89 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
10 sacks from Ed might be unrealistic although it is possible. I think he will take some adjusting to the pro-game but still be an impactful player his rookie year. I think 6 sacks is a nice Mendoza line for him. Honestly it is more so about how many pressures he is generating as opposed to the sack totals which can be a bit circumstantial. If Oliver can generate 40 or more pressures and close to 20 hits or more I think he will have a huge impact on the team in his rookie year. Overall I think expectations for Oliver should be high but not unrealistic. He might come in and set the world on fire and make a pro-bowl team and be in the running for DROY. But more realistically he might not be an instant star, yet that wouldn't mean he couldn't be productive and have a very good impact this year and beyond. Kyle was a huge loss from a locker room perspective. I don't think had he played he would been a huge impactful player but his presence as a professional and as a leader was important. But the defense luckily kept J.Phillips and drafted Oliver so on field they are as or more stout and the defense has a lot of vets on it. As you mentioned Zo is a beloved teammate and veteran, Hughes is the heart of the front 7, Star is a long time pro who played in a Super Bowl, Trent Murphy has been around for a bit, and in the secondary the safeties are guys who are 7 plus year vets. So I don't think there is an overall lack of veterans or leadership on the defense. But Kyle certainly was a loss to the culture. -
It depends on the context. I love Clowney because I think he has been woefully misused in the 3-4, he is best in a 4-3 traditional DE scheme. But I also think that Clowney comes at a super high cost as I think the Texans want multiple premium picks in 2020 and 2021 for him and you have to pay him a huge contract. I don't see the Falcons trading Julio as Julio probably has 2-3 prime or near prime years left and they want to win now with Matt Ryan who is getting older. But if the Falcons are trading Julio and the cost is lower draft pick wise I would rather give Allen another piece on offense than overpay for a prime pass rusher with injury issues. That being said I do hope the Bills make an offer for Clowney that is no more than a 2nd round pick and some mid round selections.

Brown, Beasley and the returner Roberts will be on the roster if healthy. That leaves 3 roster spots at the WR position open. In order for Zay's roster spot to be in danger he has to have 3 WR's leapfrog him. Foster is one that you could easily see that happening with. So that means 2 WR's have to be better than Zay for him to be outside the top 6. I could see one WR out of the rest beating out Zay but I don't see two happening. Esp considering that Zay was a McD pick who improved a lot last year and is still just 23 years old. It also doesn't help your case that the competition behind Zay is rather weak. I don't see two of those players coming on strong enough in camp/pre-season.

The Competition for WR6 on the Bills Roster
billsfan89 replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Brown and Beasley will make the roster. I think Foster and Zay are 90% locks. I think Roberts is also a 90% lock to make the roster, he will be the WR6 as he will just be a punt returner and kick returner and spot play WR if there are injuries. WR5 will be the spot where there will be intense competition. -
Star's deal was back loaded to have a bigger cap hit in year 2 and 3 because last off-season the team did not have a lot of cap room and they wanted to bring him in. That being said Star is overpaid but still has value to the team. Star is a grinder and does a lot of things needed out of a DT in this scheme. Yes the team could have found that role cheaper but McD knew that Star could pull off that role. I don't like the contract but Star being overpaid doesn't mean he doesn't have value for the team.

I now understand why the Bills passed on DK Metcalf
billsfan89 replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would have liked the Bill's to have traded up for DK around pick 58, probably would have been a modest price. But I am not an NFL scout or GM so my opinion is worthless. -
RD 6, Pick 181: S Jaquan Johnson, University of Miami
billsfan89 replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills needed a bit more depth at safety. I think this is the exact kind of player that will push the current backups and have a chance at developing. I can't say much about late round picks other than is this a guy that can at least come in and push current guys on the roster? Yes, and possibly have a ST impact is a nice bonus. -
RD 3, Pick 96: TE Dawson Knox, Ole Miss
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Right position to take but I am not sure I like this pick. Seems like they drafted a developmental athlete type over a more polished player. These types of freak athletes usually are great 5th to 7th round draft selections but for a late 3rd round pick I am not sure. Either way I hope this kids athleticism pans out on the pro-level although I think the impact he will have can be limited in 2019. -
RD 5, Pick 147: LB Vosean Joseph, University of Florida
billsfan89 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Love this pick, LB was a depth need and this certainly fills it. Give him a year to learn the system and get comfortable with the pro-game before he gets a shot to start. Great value in the 5th too. My third favorite pick in the draft. -
RD 3, Pick 74: RB Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic
billsfan89 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes they needed to go RB but I think they could have gone for one in round 4 or 5. I think with Yeldon, Shady, and Gore you can take a developmental guy later. Once again a certain depth need but I would have gone after a pass catcher. -
RD 3, Pick 74: RB Devin Singletary, Florida Atlantic
billsfan89 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is an OK Pick in my mind, a definite depth need as Shady and Gore don't have many years left and Yeldon is at best a good third down back. I am not sure if this is good value or not and I generally would have preferred to trade up for a receiver or TE. I loved the first two pick but I think this one is just OK. -
RD 2, Pick 38: OT Cody Ford, Oklahoma
billsfan89 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wonder what the trade up cost? Probably a 5th it was only what 2 spots? Regardless I love this pick, this builds the fortress around Josh Allen. Now package 75 with some other picks to get back in the second and take another pass catcher. -
1- Cards take O-line most likely Cody Ford or J.Taylor 2- Colts take a corner most likely Byron Murphy or Greedy Williams 3- Raiders take a corner either Murphy or Williams with an outside possibility of Rock Ya 4- Niners go with a WR I could see DK here or another one of the top players on the board going here. 5- Seattle I think goes with O-line Cody Ford or J.Taylor and an outside shot of McCoy the center going there. 6- Jags go WR they need a lot of help here, I could see DK or Brown or another WR here. I wouldn’t rule out Smith the TE here either. 7- Tampa goes with a corner, between Murphy, Williams, or Rock Ya whichever one is not take by the Colts and Raiders. 8- If DK is here I think the Bills go DK. I could also see Byron Murphy if he somehow falls but I doubt he is here. I think if DK and Byron aren’t there they go with the best O-line player or Smith at TE if they don’t like the O-line players available.

The thing is with the NFL draft you have 32 different entities that are making the only evaluations that matter. So it only takes 2-3 teams that have wildly different evaluations from the rest of the teams to shake up the draft board. Also pundits don't always have access to medicals that the teams do so typically you see some guys fall way down because of these unknown medical issues. ESPN and all the other pundits are just doing educated guesswork. But it is interesting to see what the consensus is among draft pundits. -
Boston was so racist that the Bruins who did not make the playoffs from 1959-1960 to 1966-1967 outdrew them easily. Even Bill Russell hated the Boston fanbase for years after before eventually coming back to the fanbase in the 1980's.

Albright when asked where DK goes...
billsfan89 replied to *******'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My dream scenario at pick 40 is DK and then the Bills trade back into round 2 (plenty of ammo to go from 75 to 55ish and still have plenty of mid and late round picks) and grab another high end offensive player that falls a bit more than expected. J.Taylor at pick 55ish would be amazing to bookend with DK and then use the rest of the draft to build depth. -
2nd round is setting up nicely already
billsfan89 replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They don't need to trade up from 40 to get a first round or close talent. Stay put at 40 and just let the draft come to you. I think the Bills are much better off trading back into the second from the early third to aggressively chase a player falling a bit father than expected. They could package a 4th to do so while having plenty of mid-round selections to build depth. -
I am not moving Zay unless I get a third or an early 4th and a 5th or better in 2020. Even if the Bills took DK at pick 40 (If he is still there) I would still want a much depth as possible at WR. DK, Brown, Cole, Zay, Foster, and Miller would be the WR core and it would have a lot of depth and competition to it. Now if I get DK at 40 and I get real value for Zay I would do it because I can live with Foster as depth if I can get legit picks to fill other needs along the roster. But I am not shipping out Zay for a late round pick just because the team took a WR. I think Zay is worth more than a 6th rounder.
