I hope so Bills will need all the firepower they can get. I think turf toe really hurt his production as while it is something you can play through you need a good amount of rest to actually recover. He looks faster and more agile the last game or so than he has all season. With a bye week to further help heal his injury I think the Bills are gonna see him be even more productive.

I think one of the ESPN pundits pointed out that KC really game planned to stop the conventional ground game against the Bills. So while I do think the lack of success in running the ball sans a few Josh scrambles for the most part was a combination of Brown not being there, KC playing a lot of 5 DL fronts and scheming to make the Bills throw, and let's be honest as good as the Bills O-line is KC has a very stout run defense the best in the league. I think Brown being back would help but the Bills are not likely (barring KC having a key player or two getting hurt or banged up) going to be able to run on KC in a playoff matchup if KC game plans to stop the run. KC's D-line and LB's are too good. BUT if KC has to game plan to stop the run against the Bills then I think the Bills will be just fine generating offense by protecting Josh in the passing game and running situationally.

Great breakdown, I loved the Torrence pick when the team made it last year. I would have actually been fine with the Bills taking Torrence in the first round that year (Probably would have liked at least a small trade down but even had the team stayed at 27 and drafted Torrence I would have liked the pick. But the Bills not only added the top Tight End in the draft in Kincaid but also went out and grabbed what many pundits considered to be the best "pure guard" in the draft in Torrence at pick 59. The Bills were apparently in a very good draft for interior offensive linemen as if you go back and look at that draft there were 4-5 really good interior linemen taken in round two of that draft.

I think McD wanted to call a defensive timeout (which for the first half is fine) and he turned it into a challenge as kind of a why not. I know that's kind of "wasting" a challenge but it does give the defense an extended rest and hey maybe a close call goes your way. But I think you can be kind of frivolous with a first half challenge because not only do you get two challenges but since all turnovers and TD's get reviewed automatically plus anything in the last two minutes and overtime get reviewed automatically there isn't as much of a need to horde challenges.

I think McD is realizing that you have to coach to win against KC. Much like when coaches played against Brady you have to play aggressive and leave your fate in your own hands as much as possible.
-
I'm just worried about this season, roster is in good shape overall.

Samuel being a WR4 is insanely good depth. With Cooper/Coleman on the outside, Shakir in the slot, the combo of Knox/Kincaid at TE, and Samuel as a WR4 doing gadget plays and picking his spots in 4/5 WR sets is going to give Josh a lot of weapons to work with and that's not to mention all 3 RB's are capable pass catchers out of the backfield.

There's only 32 head coaching jobs. So it is hard to pass one of those up. Of course when you are in a good situation like Daboll was in 2021 or Ben Johnson was in 2023 you can be selective but if teams call up for Brady he has to take the calls and consider anything as far as a HC opportunity goes.

Xavier Worthy: So far, not much more than a gadget guy
billsfan89 replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't think KC needs Worthy to develop into a WR1. I think they would be fine if he's a quality WR2 who adds some field stretching, big play, and gadget ability. I think they would be happy if he is a consistent 800-900 yard player on 50ish catches with 6-8 TD's. I think they likely hope that long term Rice is their WR1 and Worthy is their WR2. My main issue with Worthy is that I think he's going to have a hard time staying on the field. I think as he gets used more his durability is going to be an issue. -
The Bills offensive line turnaround was done without a lot of major resources invested in it. Looking at how each player was acquired outside of Dawkins and Brown who both predate Kromer's return in 2022 there wasn't a ton of big money or super high draft picks spent at the line. Connor McGovern- Mid-level free agent add Torrence - Highest draft pick spent late 2nd round pick 59th overall David Edwards- Low level free agency add in 2023 signed to a lower mid-level 2 year deal this past off-season. Van Denmark- Was signed to the PS after the Colts waived him as a UDFA Alec Anderson- UDFA from the Bills Will Clapp- Journeymen IOL Bills signed him on the cheap this past off-season Sedrick Van Pran-Granger- 5th round pick, should have gone higher but still not a super heavy draft investment Richard Gouraige- UDFA Tylan Grable- 6th round pick 204 overall That's in addition to turning Spencer Brown around after he had a disastrous 2022 and turned him into a player who was resigned to a fairly big contract. Even more impressive that with the resigning of Brown all major pieces of the offensive line are signed up for 2025 with Anderson and Van Denmark being ERFA's and Will Clapp being the only true unrestricted free agent. Just a masterful job of building a unit and a program.

Van Denmark was very good esp in pass protection. I do wonder if Brown not being there caused there to be less push in the ground game? Would have to watch the game with an eye for that but KC not only has a very stout D-line but they also played 5 down linemen and have a very good LB core so Brown may not have made a huge difference. But the moves made along the offensive line the past two seasons have been very good. In 2023 the additions of Torrence and Mcgovern to the starting lineup and Brown recovering from his back injury completely turned around the starting lineup. David Edwards was a nice depth addition and plugging him into the starting lineup after Morse was let go was also a good follow-up move. Anderson and Van Denmark were added in 2022 and have been a nice development story both making for strong bench players. The addition of SVPG in the draft was a strong one while Grable also looks like a nice prospect. Even Will Clapp and his hilarious name looks like a nice veteran depth addition.

KC's style of winning (close games where they make clutch plays) is going to result in some losses. I think they have at least two more losses in them at a minimum. They are still the team to beat but the one seed for the Bills is at least in play. -
I never said he would win a Super Bowl, I said he would compete with elite teams which if you are a consistent 11+ win team making the playoffs you will do that. Harbaugh as an NFL coach has taken a team to the Super Bowl and multiple Conference Championship games so that's pretty close already.
-
Harbaugh has the problem of playing a bit too conservative but I also think that in his run with the 49ers his uber conservative philosophy was driven by his lack of a quality QB. Alex Smith was a quality game manager but a QB with limitations. He then turned to Kap who was more dynamic with his legs but not a great passer. I think with Herbert he has a QB with far less limitations in his prime that will allow him to run a less limited offense. That being said even if Harbaugh employs a bit of a dated "play not to lose" offensive style despite that limitation he is still going to have a team that is going to win 11+ games fairly consistently. He's got a fairly flawed team sitting at 6-3 with a big lead at the half in a game that could have them at 7-3. Add a little more talent on both sides of the ball and it isn't hard to see a team with the QB and HC in place being successful.

I always love a late season bye week. A bye after week 10 is always optimal esp in the era of only one team getting a post season bye. For the Bills I wouldn't say they were "hurting for a bye" but the bye is going to allow some key players to come back healthy (Coleman, Carter, Kincaid, and Milano to name a few) and give some guys nursing longer term injuries a chance to get better for the rest of the season and playoffs.

I had that feeling, it didn't feel intentional, it felt like Romo was buying into the Chiefs just always know how to win thing a bit heavier than usual. I get KC makes clutch plays but Romo saying how Josh Allen missed that deep throw to Morris because of the mythology of KC was just nauseating. -
Chargers next season when they add some more talent are going to be a serious problem as they are already very good despite some talent flaws. Harbaugh is a great coach and Herbert is the best QB Harbaugh has had as an NFL coach. The Chargers adding a couple of pieces on both sides of the ball in the off-season is going to allow them to compete with elite teams in the AFC.

Bengals fans have been saying for years that their coach over relies on the Burrow/Chase connection similar to how for a few years Allen/Diggs bailed out the Bills. Assuming the Bengals season goes off the rails this year their coach is going to be on the hot seat in 2025.

Poona had some flashes in a stretch of games last year. But for the most part didn't do a whole lot.
-
When it comes to drafting the Bills have been very good in the McD era and in the past 3 drafts from 2022-2024 look like they are on a heater (hard to tell on 2024 but the "early returns" look good) so whatever they are doing just keep it up.

I think had they had a spy Josh could have gotten a 3-4 yard gain but Spags who is a great DC either didn't have a spy or there was a complete breakdown in communication -
Is this the best team in the Allen era?
billsfan89 replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
2022 the team had two very big flaws even if you factor out the injuries. The offense lacked a second consistently good pass catching option besides Diggs and the offensive line was a complete mess. The Bills had Spencer Brown coming off a solid rookie year but having major back surgery made him a suspect player to go into the season without a proven vet option there. The Bills also had a suspect guard combo with Bates and Saffold. Finally there was hope that Gabe Davis in year 3 fresh off that insane KC playoff game would take a step up as a WR opposite Diggs but that didn't happen and the rest of the Bills WR core was mostly role players. I went into 2022 thinking the defense and special teams was stacked while the offense had some issues. The issues manifested on offense while injuries hit the defense hard in season. -
He's been very good, McD has shown he knows how to develop corners consistently in fact with how solid Hamlin has played McD is showing he deserves full trust when it comes to all things secondary.
