They probably will use more 4 wide but I still expect them to try and run their offense with Sweeney. But I do see Davis getting more snaps and targets, the Bills would be foolish not to adjust their gameplan to feature him more and the TE less.
-
We will see how good Sweeney is in the next two games and then can see if the team can make any marginal upgrades to the backup TE spot. As far as RB I don't see the need. The team has two young and healthy backs who are producing fairly well. I do think Sanders from Philly would be a slight upgrade but I don't see the organization coughing up a decent pick to modestly upgrade the RB position. Guard is a spot that I wouldn't mind seeing an upgrade. I am not as harsh on Mongo as many here are. I think Mongo is a decent starting caliber guard. But he is average at best. If this team were to somehow find a good guard out on the market that could plug into Mongo's spot that would be great. I think Mongo off the bench is a fantastic add as he can play guard or center better than most bench players. But the only guard on the market possibly is Norwell who has a huge cap number that isn't compatible with the Bills cap situation.

The Bills restructured the base salaries to bonuses for Diggs, White, Dawkins and Poyer along with redoing Mitch, Addison and Butler who took pay cuts. I am not sure who else on the roster they can restructure to free up enough space to accomodate a 7 million dollar a year salary. I am honestly asking since I am not NFL cap expert and maybe there is a way to free up the space. I would easily welcome a trade for Norwell as it lines up with the teams needs and lines up for the Jags to trade him. But the Bills cap and Norwell's salary is just not something that reconciles to me.

Boomers: Does Derrick Henry remind you of Cookie Gilchrist?
billsfan89 replied to John Gianelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
He reminds me of Adrian Peterson but bigger with less receiving skill. Both were angry downhill runners with breakaway speed and rather large bodies. AP was a bit smaller at 6 foot 2 inches tall and weighing in at 217 pounds. Henry is listed at 6 foot 3 247 pounds about 30 pounds heavier and while he is an inch taller that inch isn't accounting for 30 pounds. Although AP was a much better receiver even if Henry isn't bad at catching passes. I would give Henry the edge in terms of running the ball between the tackles. That's my comparison. -
They do happen but a lot has to line up in order for it to occur. First a team needs cap space and the Bills don't have it. Secondly the needs of a contending team have to line up with a team who has a productive player that is either older or on the final year of their deal. I am not saying it can't happen but it isn't as easy or as common as it is in other sports.

Nothing is for certain in the world of sports especially football. The Bills will be a very good team or at least a good team for the foreseeable future. But right now this team they have could be the chance to win a Super Bowl. But the NFL is an odd place when it comes to in season trades. In the NBA, NHL and MLB if you need that last piece for your team you can usually find it. If you need a piece to add to your bench or a little bit of shooting in the NBA you can find it if you are willing to give up a pick or a young player or take back some salary. In the NHL and MLB there are always sellers willing to take back picks and prospects for that one player you feel gives you the edge for a stretch run. But the NFL isn't always filled with sellers at the trade deadline nor is the cap flexible to allow teams to make trades. The Bills have 3 million in cap space that's not a lot to work with on top of that they have no glaring needs that they would sell out for. If there was a piece that they could add I would be all for it, but it just doesn't appear to line up that way at this moment.

Which realistic trade options should the Bills target?
billsfan89 replied to JohnNord's topic in The Stadium Wall
I have seen Norwell as a big wish for the fans. While I think he would help the O-line and his team would likely listen to an offer since their season is on life support and might be irrelevant by the trade deadline I don't see a feasible way to get a 15 million dollar cap hit fitting in with the Bills' meager cap space. I don't see any other guard out on the market that is both affordable, would make an impact, and is on a team that would consider trading them. Miles Sanders is another name that is more reasonable cap-wise and his team is also on life support, but I don't see him as being a difference-maker. Our RB tandem is producing good results and Sanders isn't a dynamic player that much better than what the team has. I don't see the team giving up a decent pick to get slightly better at RB. I just don't see any fits out on the market right now. -
Which realistic trade options should the Bills target?
billsfan89 replied to JohnNord's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not sure the Bills make any moves absent of injuries. I think Guard is a place where I would like to see some help but good Oline play is not usually available and I don’t see any low cost quality players being made available on the market. Also D Williams is playing well there and Mongo is a starting caliber player there so you need to have a quality acquisition to make an impact. CB 2 is mentioned but I think Levi is turning in his best season so any acquisitions there would be purely for depth in my opinion and I am not sure the organization views there being a need for depth there. So in the end I think barring a long term injury I think the Bills roll with what they have. I just don’t see the market and needs of the team lining up. -
All-22 Grades for Bills/Titans (The Athletic)
billsfan89 replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Just an odd game looking further back on it, the Bills offense ended up in a shootout mainly because of a big play given up to Henry and some bad redzone inefficiency. The defense came out strong but faded fast. Just have to chalk it up to a tough road loss. Luckily they get a bye week after a physical game. -
Emanuel Sanders - is What Was Lost Worth the Gain ?
billsfan89 replied to T master's topic in The Stadium Wall
Sanders not only has been productive on the field but he is also the only player on the team with a Super Bowl ring and a ton of playoff experience (I believe he has played in 3 Super Bowls) only Hyde matches him in terms of career playoff games. That off the field mentality has helped the team massively. I loved John Brown in 2019 but he showed his injury form in 2020 and had a high cap hit. Sanders is more reliable and brings off field factors that are positive. -

The Bills offense is still one of the best in the league. The Bills have adjusted their offense and are still working out the kinks a bit but that’s to the teams benefit long term. -
Bills TE Dawson Knox out a few weeks following surgery on broken hand
billsfan89 replied to muppy's topic in The Stadium Wall
Good timing for the bye to limit the amount of games he missed, should hopefully not miss too much time. -
He has been good this season, he wasn’t that impactful in the Titans game but for the most part he has been a good disruptive player in the early going. There is a reason that he is leading a deep defensive line in snaps. Don’t let the lack of flashy stats fool you.

A few thoughts about the Titans game, in no particular order
billsfan89 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
A loss stings (and it was an extra big sting for me as it caused me to lose my fantasy football game) but in the end the Bills lost a road shootout to a good team. They lost basically because they couldn't execute a QB sneak late in the game. -
The decision to go for it on 4th down in a road game shootout is absolutely the right decision. But the QB sneak play call was questionable in my opinion. The Bills had trouble in the past with QB sneaks and Josh had if I remember correctly had failed to convert one earlier in the game. I would preferred they done a different type of play call in that situation but going for it? Absolutely the right call even if it didn't work out.
-
The Bills turned the game into a 50/50 shootout (most shootouts in the NFL are a 50/50 type situation) when they could pile up a big lead and turn the Titans into a passing team. They turned an opportunity for a 14-0 or at least 10-0 lead early into a meager 6-0 lead. The Titans gameplan is to keep the game close and let King Henry (who in my opinion should be an MVP candidate and is a fantastic talent) wear down the defense and turn the Titans to utilize their physical receivers in play action and single coverage. Despite the shootout the Bills still had the ball down 3 deep in the Titans territory with less than a minute left. The Bills couldn't execute a simple QB sneak and it cost them. But the reason the margin for error was so low was the lack of being able to go up big which was a product of the red zone inefficiency early and letting up that big run to Henry.

Should NFL refs start being suspended for idiotic calls?
billsfan89 replied to Walking Tall's topic in The Stadium Wall
They do internal reviews of all refs. The NFL has quality control for refs as do all sports leagues. The refs with the lowest percentage of bad calls tend to get the better assignments. I know people who work for the NBA in referee operations which have a detailed process for their referee performance reviews. It’s just that refereeing a sport is such a hugely subjective thing that no matter what some people won’t be happy. -
I wouldn't mind signing Roberts, he was a sturdy effective punt returner in 2019 and 2020. However, he hasn't been very good with the Texans as a returner in 2021 and is 33 and will be 34 in January. As much as Mac has made me a bit nervous, he has been pretty solid as a returner. Not sure if Roberts still has it as a return man but I wouldn't fault the Bills for trying to get a steady hand they are familiar with back in the fold.

I think Josh has the stronger arm and plays in the conditions more. I would trust him to take on the winds more than Lamar. You could be right in that there are points where any QB struggles in those conditions so point well taken.

We need to ease off on other fans' misery.
billsfan89 replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall
Depends on the fan base. There is no need to pile on the Jaguars or Texans who have not shown to be generally speaking as douches. I think exceptions to this are division rivals and fanbases who have become overbearing like KC. Generally speaking I do agree that you should just enjoy your teams success. -
He is coming off a serious injury so I am not shocked to see him coming out a bit slow. I will give it a bit of time before I write him off as not being close to the same player. I watched all of his targets against the Cardinals and he didn’t have any bad drops. The only possible drop he had was on a 4th down where he was pretty heavily blanketed by the defense and would have been short had he caught it. I do think the Browns are not a great situation for him. They are a run heavy offense with a QB that has chemistry issues with Odell. I think if Odell were to be traded to a better team he would show out more. He still draws the gravity of coverage and when he gets decent targets his production improves.
-
I think home field will be very important for the Bills if they match up with Baltimore in the playoffs. Lamar can throw but he can’t throw in the heavy winds like Josh can. That would make the Ravens one dimensional and would really make it difficult on them. Whereas in Baltimore the weather might somewhat cold the winds aren’t as big a factor. Agree with you on the Pats, they are a tough team that is missing out on luck a bit. Definitely think they will push for a wildcard spot in the AFC at least on the fringes.

Does anybody want to tell me again how good Flores is?

I thought Flores could be a good find for Miami but this season has proven otherwise. Just poor management of a situation that could have been way better. -
