Starbucks Fans...Whadayathink of this new idea?
Wacka replied to IDBillzFan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
No problem with Starpukes in WNY. There are only 12 in the area, with half near Amherst. Cheektowaga has at least a dozen Tim Horton's alone. No pretentious snobs there. -

Any KISS fans here? What do you think of this.
Wacka replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I saw KISS back in aroundJan 1977. This was before the kids (I mean 14 or so )started liking them (Chef Jim was ahead of his time). There were a couple parents with their kids in the row ahead of us. We freaked them out by offering a joint. Of course we didn't light up in front of them. -
Any other ex-smokers out there?
Wacka replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Never smoked but it did cost my dad an early death. He smoked cigarettes from a teen (around 1945) until the mid 60s. He then smoked a pipe and cigars until1983 when he had a "silent" heart attack and a TIA and quit cold turkey. The damage had already been done and he was diagnosed in 1989 with small cell carcinoma and died about18 months later in 1990 (the day after the big comeback against Denver) at the age of 60. Best not to start at all, but if you do, please quit immediately. -

If I ever went to a Starbucks, I'd tell the hipster doofus behind the counter: "F You. Just give me my coffee," -
Since my last post today,I went out again and doubled my distance walking! Went 0.6 miles down the street to my cardiologist's office. Went in and asked if I could rest my leg there for 5-10 minutes. Thanked them and walked back home. Heart was fine, just that the leg gets tired. The office is right on Cayuga Creek and if you walk to the back of the parking lot, it is right above the creek. The creek is moving swiftly, but there are no ice chunks and it has several feet to go before flooding there. That area will not flood as the C of E did a lot of remediation after the flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and it hasn't flooded since(great work!). Had my phone wake me twice on Sunday night because there were flood alerts for Cayuga Creek in Bowmansville and Buffalo Creek in West Seneca, but those did't flood.

See, people were complaining about the winter not ending just 2 weeks ago. I said, look up, spring is coming. I was right. The snow is slowly disappearing (good thing it is not too fast- less chance of floding). It has been warm enough that I can start walking around the neighborhood. The shoulders here in Cheektowaga are snow free.Went out 3 times last week and found that I can make it about 2/3 mile round trip. Use my mom's cane only on the return trip as the leg gets tired.Left one is the one that was affected by the stroke. No pain, but want to take a nap afterward and sometimes do. Will try to walk a house farther each time as to build my stamina and strength. Hope to be doing 1+ miles each way by the 1 year "anniversary" of my stroke in July. Buds on the trees should start appearing in the next couple of weeks and the robins should be back soon.

What happens to the black in coffee when you drink it?
Wacka replied to mead107's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Plus the substances that make the coffee dark get broken down. Pee is yellow due to the broken down hemoglobin from old and recycled red blood cells. When you drink a lot of water, it is almost colorless. Poop is brown partially due to broken down bile. If i drink grape pop, mine turns greenish due to the purple dye. -

DC Tom pilots plane on Perth to Auckland run
Wacka replied to Beerball's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Had two flights where they had to go around. One was into Raleigh/Durham. The pilot said the plane ahead of us had;t cleared the runway in time. On the go-around I timed it from that point and it was 9 minutes before landing. The oyjer time was a flight from Dulles to SFO. It was a late Friday flight that was to spend the night at SFO. There were only about 30 of us on a 747. As we were over the San Mateo Bridge on the final approach (a minute or two from landing) the plane suddenly puled up and started the large circle over the SF bay. The pilot said something about a light on the panel and then we circled and landed. -

Still not driving due to vision problems but they have been getting better. If I turn quickly, I get balance problems but not major. I weaned myself off a walker by October. No major memory or speech problems. (Ex: the guy on the Snickers commercial (Jan)). I know him but, for the life of me I can't remember his name when I want to. Just have to make lists to remember stuff, like Dr appointments or a list of my meds when I go to a new doctor. Scariest was laying in the hospital not knowing if I would be normal again .My mom is 88 so I have been helping her out by taking the dog out, shoveling off the driveway (when there is a little snow), and going downstairs to do the wash. She can still cook and does the dishes when I am out doing the drive. My brother has a friend down the street that plows the drive after work when we get more than a few inches at a time.

I had one removed when I was 4 back in 1961. Have been fine with only one since then, Parents were told I couldn't play tackle football or hockey or dive from a high board (things that could injure my remaining kidney). Growing to 5'4" precluded going out for these too. My BP was up to 246/something just before my stroke in July. They said the high BP had damaged my kidney function and I go to a nephrologist now to keep an eye on it. They had to adjust my BP medsto make sure my kidney function is OK as diuretics can affect the kidneys. I have about 80-90 %of function left in the one I have.Keepung an eye on my diet too to keep salt intake low. Also loosing at least 55 lbs since last spring helps. I am also looking forward to spring so that I can walk around the neighborhood with safety (we have no sidewalks)and not freeze.
-
Just be happy that you are here for another spring. The docs told me last July that if I hadn't gone in to the hospital (where I had a stroke) that I probably wouldn't have made it another month and had a massive stroke and /or had my remaining kidney fail. So some cold weather is nothing. It will warm up.

Although it is still below freezing (25), things are melting. Noticed a few drops coming off eaves in the sun. Shoveled about half the drive this AM and the where the ice was,it is turning to slush in the sun. Also staying light noticeably later recently. After 6 PM now! Look to that to perk yourself up. Hell, with my health problems the past year, I'm glad I'm still here to see spring approaching.
