DTs aren't the problem IMO. The back 7 has been the problem. DQ to my eyes has been fine, and Walker has made a few elite plays against the run. McDermott wants his front players to plug their gap and force the RB to a spot where a LB or safety can clean up the tackle. The problem is Bernard regularly gets turned out of his gap, Williams when he has played is nowhere near his gap, Rapp misses 25% of his tackles, and Bishop has been slow to react and takes poor angles to the ball carrier. So on seemingly every play we're either stopping the RB in the backfield or we're giving up 8+ yards. DTs aren't going to shed every single block. We need more 3 yard gains, less house calls.

Would not be shocked if its Cam Lewis starting. But my money is its Poyer. I really hope they sign or trade for someone soon. We were already in need even with a healthy Rapp and Hamlin.

I don’t agree that McD is the worst coach. But he says weird *****. last week with Palmer McD said “he might play Sunday against Carolina. Or he might go on IR.” um, thanks for that Sean lol

My view on the Bills Defensive Problems
hondo in seattle replied to Cheektavegas Charlie's topic in The Stadium Wall
You're operating from a paradigm I just don't believe. I'm a pretty self-confident guy overall, but one thing I know I absolutely can't do is read minds. ESP, telepathy, and all that are just not in my toolkit. So I don't know why McD hired Babich. I won't pretend to. I have no idea if ego, selfishness, idiocy, or feeling threatened were involved. But if I had to guess, McD promoted Babich because McD felt misaligned with Frazier and wanted to avoid that problem with the new guy. But that's just a guess. And I still don't know what people mean when they say we should abandon schemes that don't work. The Bills run the same schemes as everyone else. We just don't execute them as well as the best teams. I do agree with this, though: McD doesn't have a great track record with coordinators. He's replaced a bunch but still hasn't caught up to KC. Chiefs OC: Matt Nagy (a former head coach and NFL Coach of the Year, innovative play-caller) DC: Spags (former head coach; Chris Jones, Tony Romo, and others say Spags should be enshrined in a coordinator Hall of Fame). Bills OC: Brady (young first-time coordinator; experiencing some growing pains). DC: Babich (young first-time coordinator; experiencing some growing pains). -
not opposed, but highly unlikely they've even considered it. Put Hancock anywhere in the secondary IMO. Just get him on the field

Damar is on IR

That sounds like the Bills.

McD is one of the worst media coaches, I don't know if it's nerves or what, but he constantly says weird stuff that just invites speculation.

We spend so much time talking about WR and the offense it’s absolutely maddening. The offense is fine, it’s been fine it will be fine. The problem with the team is the defense. Since 2018, it’s been the defense. It hasn’t changed it won’t change. The guy COACHING the defense is why we can’t win. Never expecting to make stops is inconceivable. Every team in the league expects to make stops. We flat out never do. That is the problem. Forget trading for a WR. Bring in a guy to take over the defense. That’s how we get there. Until then, it makes no difference

I didn’t want Coleman, Mitchell was my guy. I was able to tolerate his occasional absence of effort/not playing at full speed when not targeted etc.. but when news broke of his occasional behavioural issues what with not taking his meds etc…I realized that it was unlikely we would draft him. I say I didn’t want Coleman but I wasn’t against it like others were. I thought then and continue to think that he could develop into a productive player, maybe even a very productive player, but I dont think the Bills have done him and his development any favours. They may be putting his career in jeopardy. Clearly for a young guy not named Randy Moss lining him up almost exclusively outside, and more even than real X receivers do in today’s game by the way (including BTJ) the ask was probably too much (as well as downright dumb). The Bills O needs a genuine X receiver. If they had that, as well as maybe a little imagination scheme wise/gameplanning/playcalling, a guy like Coleman would have a much better chance of developing properly. It’s probably unfair and inaccurate to say so but i’ve always gotten a strong Jauron whiff from McD. Anyway whats apparent is that these guys just dont know wide receivers. Just look around the league.

And I am not trying to avoid directly answering the question but bear with me: 1. I do think the schematic fundamentals of the defense are solid, but I don't think they are being executed solidly and when I say executed I do not just mean by the players, I mean by the coaches too. I think the playcalling is bad and I have seen more of the Bills not being lined up properly and confused pre-snap this year than I have in the last 5 or 6 years combined. So I don't think it is just about swapping a few players out, it is about the way the entire operation is being coached and played. 2. That said, if McDermott cannot get this fixed by the end of the season then they have to make a change. You cannot be a defensive minded Head Coach on a team that is supposed to contend and have a defense that is this fundamentally broken. This isn't like some playoff failures against top teams, this is much more intrinsic to the way the Bills are playing defense. So if they can't fix it then they need to blow it up and that starts at the top.

IMO an absurd answer. Why say that? How about "you'll see Sunday" anything else would be better I am ALL IN to see that combo. Toss Hairston out there and bench Tre too.

I have 3 Poyer Jerseys. Poy was always one of my favorite Bills. I have 3 Milano. It’s been a pleasure watching those two smashing opposing players routinely. Bills Squad Jerry O said “who brings the juice on D now?” Poyer and Milano brought the juice! Both make game changing plays with intensity. It’s electric- those big plays get the whole team pumped up. It’s a power surge - you can feel it. Ed brings the juice. And IMO Hoecht is bringing a 55 gallon of Juice to Carolina. LFG! GO BILLS!
-
I want to see them experiment with Taron at safety and Hancock at nickel. But I expect the reverse to be tried.

Which coach started that low positive thing with Josh? I never understood that. Although you can't be extreme emotion ALL of the time, I guess. My thoughts (not that anybody asked) ... LEAVE JOSH ALONE. lol

So this week you're not predicting a return to glory? The fans forget quickly. Regarding the team itself, I appreciate the culture, the process, and everything McBeane has built here. It counts for a lot and it's made Buffalo a more attractive destination for players. That said, I feel McBeane probably go farther than many/most teams in terms of being dispassionate about their players... meaning that they let their emotions or their convictions on a player cloud their judgement too often. Granted it's a very hard balance to find but I sometimes feel that there's too many feel good stories and not enough cold, hard decisions being made on player performance. Again, it's a hard balance to find because you're trying to build loyalty and trust with the players and that counts too. JMO.

Yeah, Sammy was the toughest placement for me. In terms of talent, he belongs at the top (or near it). He was hurt and lazy when he was here. He had flashes of brilliance but nowhere near what his talent showed. Go back and watch the Clemson/OSU Orange Bowl from his last year. He was unstoppable 16/227/2!!

I trust the coach. On first glance, i question Poyer over Damar. But Poyer does bring that aggressiveness i suppose. Good lord. Our secondary is a shitshow.

I couldn’t even get emotional about this. I’m just going thru the motions at this point. My therapist is concerned.

Mike Lombardi's football cred called into question
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower replied to stuvian's topic in The Stadium Wall
Lombardi always sounded to me like his own biggest fan. Ironically, people who act like they invented something, like the game. Or their resume is unique end up getting caught eventually. People find out they can't do what they said and credibility gets shot. Yes it can get you in the door but not as much as people might think. I know I was fooled one time as a person leading hiring decisions. Never again though. If its too good to be true it likely is.
